Shepherd Mead , born Edward Mead (April 26, 1914 – August 15, 1994) was an American writer. He is best known as the author of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, which was adapted into a hit Broadway show and motion picture. Contents. Biography. Mead, a native of St. Louis, graduated with an A.B. from Washington University in St. Louis in 1936. He joined the Benton & Bowles advertising agency in 1936 as a mail-room clerk, and worked his way up to a vice-presidency by the time he left in 1956 to pursue a writing career. In 1957 Mead moved to Switzerland and in the following year to Great Britain, where he worked as an advertising consultant. He went on to write 19 novels, including The Big Ball of Wax: A Story of Tomorrow's Happy World (1954) describing life in the future year 1993, and The Carefully Considered Rape of the World: A Novel about the Unspeakable (1965), in which all of Earth's fertile women are simultaneously impregnated by baboon-like extraterrestrials. In 1968 he moved back to Switzerland, but then returned to Great Britain in 1978. He died in London in August 1994. How to Succeed . Mead's best known book has no plot; it is a satire of an instructional manual, very similar in form and subject matter to Stephen Potter's Gamesmanship . Mead's book was inspired by his corporate experiences; How to Succeed satirized contemporary office life in the United States in the guise of a self-help book. Published in 1952, it was written in his spare time - before work and on weekends. Its subtitle was "The dastard's guide to fame and fortune." The book was a best-seller, and in 1961 it was adapted into a musical by Frank Loesser, with book by Abe Burrows. the play differs significantly from the book. It satirizes Mead's own career by depicting the rise of eager young J. Pierrepont Finch . a window-washer who joins a huge corporation by starting in the mail room, and becomes chairman of the board a week later. The play starred Robert Morse as the young striver J. Pierrepont Finch and Rudy Vallee as the company president J.B. Biggley. The play was a smash hit, with a Broadway run of 1,417 performances between October 1961 and March 1965. It won eight Tony Awards and the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for best drama. During the run of the play, Mead appeared as himself, along with two impostors, on the panel game show To Tell the Truth . The Broadway production was adapted into a movie, also starring Morse and several other members of the Broadway cast, in 1967. It was successfully revived on Broadway in 1995, starring Matthew Broderick as Finch. A 2011 revival, starring Daniel Radcliffe, opened on March 27. In Brazil, the book, titled in portuguese Como Vencer na Vida sem Fazer Força , was translated by brazilian dramaturgist Glaucio Gil and published in 1963. The book got two brazilian prefacies written by Sérgio Porto using the pseudonym Stanislaw Ponte Preta and the name of his fictitious cousin Altamirando. Quote.

Newspapers in Education and The 5th Avenue Theatre Present SUCCESS, SATIRE, and SCENERY A GLIMPSE INTO THE WORLD OF HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING LIVE ON STAGE AT THE 5TH AVENUE THEATRE JANUARY 21 – FEBRUARY 28 The musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, is a satire first performed in 1961. It is set in the urban offices of a fictional corporation called the World Wide Wicket Company and tells the story of J. Pierrepont Finch, a window washer who works his way up the corporate ladder with the help of a dastardly self-help book. BUILDING A SET, CREATING A WORLD In creating an original set for How to Succeed, designers Tom Sturge and David Sumner hoped to create a world that evoked the 1960s. In their designs, they’ve used elements from classic “International” style of architecture and elements from the art of Piet Mondrian. Buildings designed in the “International” style dominated new construction in the 1950s and 1960s and the art of Piet Mondrian found mainstream popularity during the same time period. Like visual art, a set can be described in terms of colors, textures (soft, rough, smooth), space (open, closed, far, near), lines (straight, curved, broken), and shapes. How would you describe this set in regard to these elements? If a part of your life story was turned into a play or musical, what would the set look like? At The 5th Avenue Theatre, stagehands install a newly designed set for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. $18 STUDENT MATINEE TICKETS AND DISCOUNTED GROUP TICKETS

  • Climbing the Corporate Ladder, Tune by Tune
Climbing The Corporate Ladder, Tune by Tune By Director Greg Ganakas What is your vision for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying? This award-winning musical is based on Shepherd Mead’s book “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying or The Dastard’s Guide to Fame and Fortune” which became a best-seller in 1952. Mead was a real businessman who had already succeeded in making this story come to life. A vice-president of the New York advertising firm of Benton and Bowles, Mead had ample opportunity to observe how people succeed in business, and his book spoofs their maneuvers. The original book was a great resource. The text discloses everything that is done in the corporate world but never talked about out loud. It’s charming, fun, and light-hearted without “really trying.” The current interest for the time period has been influenced by the Emmy award-winning Mad Men. Apart from making 1960s fashion and décor stylish again, it has sparked interest in the mechanics of a big advertising firm. It has been my privilege to collaborate on this production with Jo Loesser, the wife of the late composer Frank Loesser. She has attended rehearsals and been a key component to our process. I have been able to hear first-hand about the original collaboration, which re-teamed her husband and author-director Abe Burrows. How do you think Goodspeed audiences will enjoy the show? After directing numerous shows at Goodspeed, I almost feel as if I know the audience personally. How to Succeed is full of wit, memorable tunes, and energetic dances.

  • Program Notes by Joshua S
Program Notes By Joshua S. Ritter, Goodspeed Education Director Television played an important role in reinvigorating Broadway musical comedy in the 1960s. A new musical, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, penned by successful screen, radio and stage writer Abe Burrows opened on October 14, 1961 at the 46th Street Theatre. At that time, screenwriters such as Neil Simon, Larry Gelbart, Joseph Stein, and Michael Stewart had begun to write outstanding musical comedy librettos for the stage. These writers perfected the art of sketch writing for television and they brought those skills with them to the theatre. Upon arrival, they combined forces with Broadway veterans to revive a lively and amusing style of musical that would appeal to the proverbial “tired businessman.” Successful shows emerged such as How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying; Bye Bye Birdie; A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum; and Promises, Promises. In the 1960s the Great White Way wasn’t teeming with tourists from every corner of the globe. A large portion of the potential audience for Broadway shows was sitting in nearby offices, wealthy and weary after a long day of work. Producers knew that capturing the interest of businessmen would require attractive performers, high- energy physical comedy, and a story with which they could identify. Some lesser known shows focused too much on bringing in working men and lacked substance such as How Now, Dow Jones; Oh, Captain!; Let It Ride!; I Had A Ball; and Subways Are for Sleeping. These productions had short runs and they were classics of the tired businessman genre.
