And, what a season it has APR 8-27 been! From the timelessness of Irving Berlin’s lyrical melodies in I Love a Piano, to the powerful Miss Saigon, to the grandeur of South Pacific, the productions on the Stark Stage have been moving and dynamic. On the Waxlax Stage, the comedy God Of Carnage and musical Closer Than Ever generated tremendous acclaim, and sold out performances! It has truly been a season of great success and artistic achievements. But, the season isn’t over yet! Our season finale is the type of exhilarating musical that made Broadway, Broadway. How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is big, exuberant, witty, and full of great fun. A satire of big business, this show was not only a great success when it first played on Broadway in the early 60’s, but garnered two incredibly well-re- ceived Broadway revivals – one starring Matthew Broderick in 1995 and the other with Daniel Radcliff of Harry Potter fame in 2011. Newspapers in Education and The 5th Avenue Theatre Present SUCCESS, SATIRE, and SCENERY A GLIMPSE INTO THE WORLD OF HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING LIVE ON STAGE AT THE 5TH AVENUE THEATRE JANUARY 21 – FEBRUARY 28 The musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, is a satire first performed in 1961. It is set in the urban offices of a fictional corporation called the World Wide Wicket Company and tells the story of J. Pierrepont Finch, a window washer who works his way up the corporate ladder with the help of a dastardly self-help book. BUILDING A SET, CREATING A WORLD In creating an original set for How to Succeed, designers Tom Sturge and David Sumner hoped to create a world that evoked the 1960s. In their designs, they’ve used elements from classic “International” style of architecture and elements from the art of Piet Mondrian. Buildings designed in the “International” style dominated new construction in the 1950s and 1960s and the art of Piet Mondrian found mainstream popularity during the same time period. Like visual art, a set can be described in terms of colors, textures (soft, rough, smooth), space (open, closed, far, near), lines (straight, curved, broken), and shapes. How would you describe this set in regard to these elements? If a part of your life story was turned into a play or musical, what would the set look like? At The 5th Avenue Theatre, stagehands install a newly designed set for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. $18 STUDENT MATINEE TICKETS AND DISCOUNTED GROUP TICKETS

Directed by Scott Elliott, this production will play a limited Off-Broadway engagement February 20 – April 1, with Opening Night on Thursday, March 8 at The Pershing Square Signature Center (The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre, 480 West 42nd Street). Through the microcosm of a rural Connecticut mental health center, Tony Award-winning playwright David Rabe conjures a whole American community on the edge. Like their patients and their families, Dr. Michaels (Ed Harris), his colleague Evangeline (Amy Madigan) and the clinic itself teeter between breakdown and survival, wielding dedication and humanity against the cunning, inventive adversary of mental illness, to hold onto the need to fight – and to live. Inspired by a real clinic, Rabe finds humor and compassion in a raft of richly drawn characters adrift in a society and a system stretched beyond capacity.
