Wade, scenic design by John Raley, costume design by Hunter Kaczorowski, and lighting design by Gertjan Houben. “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” with music by Frank Loesser and book by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock, and Willie Gilbert, is based on Shepherd Mead’s 1952 book of the same title. The production directed by Bucks County Playhouse Artistic Associate Hunter Foster has a 17- member Actors Equity and six Acting Apprentice cast. The original 1980 Broadway stage musical, with a book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, lyrics by Al Dubin and Johnny Mercer, and music by Harry Warren, received the Tony Award for Best Musical. The 2001 Broadway revival received a Tony for Best Revival. The musical is based on a novel by Bradford Ropes and the 1933 Hollywood film. The musical includes songs from other films for which Dubin and Warren wrote songs, including “Gold Diggers of 1933,” “Roman Scandals,” “Dames,” “Gold Diggers of 1935,” “Go Into Your Dance,” “Gold Diggers of 1937,” “The Singing Marine” and the song, “There’s a Sunny Side to Every Situation,” by Warren and Johnny Mercer, from “Hard to Get.” Tickets: Bucks County Playhouse box office, 70 S. It is set in the urban offices of a fictional corporation called the World Wide Wicket Company and tells the story of J. Pierrepont Finch, a window washer who works his way up the corporate ladder with the help of a dastardly self-help book. BUILDING A SET, CREATING A WORLD In creating an original set for How to Succeed, designers Tom Sturge and David Sumner hoped to create a world that evoked the 1960s. In their designs, they’ve used elements from classic “International” style of architecture and elements from the art of Piet Mondrian. Buildings designed in the “International” style dominated new construction in the 1950s and 1960s and the art of Piet Mondrian found mainstream popularity during the same time period. Like visual art, a set can be described in terms of colors, textures (soft, rough, smooth), space (open, closed, far, near), lines (straight, curved, broken), and shapes. On his climb to the top he meets his love interest, Rosemary; deals with a bumbling CEO, J. B. Biggley, and tangles with the CEO’s mistress, Hedy LaRue, and his nephew, Bud Frump. Hayes 2009 PREFACE When the University of Wyoming began collecting the papers of national entertainment figures in the 1970s, it was one of only a handful of repositories actively engaged in the field. Business and industry, science, family history, even print literature were all recognized as legitimate fields of study while prejudice remained against mere entertainment as a source of scholarship. There are two arguments to be made against this narrow vision. In the first place, entertainment is very much an industry. It employs thousands. It requires vast capital expenditure, and it lives or dies on profit. In the second place, popular culture is more universal than any other field. Each individual’s experience is unique, but one common thread running throughout humanity is the desire to be taken out of ourselves, to share with our neighbors some story of humor or adventure. This is the basis for entertainment. The Entertainment Industry collections at the American Heritage Center focus on the twentieth century. During the twentieth century, entertainment in the United States changed radically due to advances in communications technology. The development of radio made it possible for the first time for people on both coasts to listen to a performance simultaneously. The delivery of entertainment thus became immensely cheaper and, at the same time, the fame of individual performers grew.

August 11, 1915; d. July 2, 2006) was born in Rochester, NY. He graduated from the University of Rochester in 1937 with distinction with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics; he was also elected to the academic honors society Phi Beta Kappa. In 1941, he moved to Washington, DC, to work in the Army Ordnance Division of the War Department as a research analyst. He left that position in 1954 to restore a house he purchased in Georgetown. Subsequently, in 1956, he joined the National Automobile Dealers Association as a research analyst and worked there until his retirement in 1972. He was an avid musician and concert-goer: he was a talented pianist, and he composed music throughout his life.

The story concerns young, ambitious J. Pierrepont Finch who, with the help of the book How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, rises from window washer to chairman of the board of the World Wide Wicket Company. The musical, starring Robert Morse & Rudy Vallee, opened at the 46th Street Theatre on Broadway in October 1961, running for 1,417 performances. The show won seven Tony Awards, the New York Drama Critics Circle award, and the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 1967, a film based on the musical was released by United Artists, with many of the original cast recreating their roles. A 1995 revival was mounted at the same theatre as the original production (now named the Richard Rodgers Theatre) ran for 548 performances and starred Matthew Broderick and Megan Mullally. A 50th anniversary Broadway revival directed and choreographed by Rob Ashford and starring Daniel Radcliffe and John Larroquette opened on March 27, 2011, at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre and ran for 473 performances.
