This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

    Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum • Words & Music • Grades 3–6 Kacey Musgraves: Inspired by Small-town Roots By the time she started taking guitar lessons at age twelve, Kacey Musgraves had already spent four years singing at public events. But her guitar teacher challenged Musgraves to do more than play and sing. “He saw that I dabbled in writing a bit and really pushed me to work on that,” Musgraves said. “My assignment was to go home and try to write a song. I fell in love with it.” Born on August 21, 1988, in the east Texas town of Sulphur Springs, Musgraves grew up in nearby Golden, a town with fewer than two hundred residents. At age eight, she learned to yodel, dressed up in cowgirl outfits, and began performing classic country songs at small amateur shows in the area. Her guitar teacher John DeFoore – who also taught Miranda Lambert, another country star from east Texas – pushed Musgraves to discover her own country music identity. “When I first started writing my own songs, they were pretty bad,” she said. “I hadn’t found my own voice yet. [But] I learned not to be scared to just throw an idea out there.” At age eighteen, she moved to Austin, Texas, to work on a singing career, and earned a spot on the television singing competition Nashville Star, placing seventh. I have found that no one really buys from me for Christmas anyway; they buy for their self gratification and to be honest there is NO better reason. Secondly I was fortunate enough to go to the USA on a buying trip spending a bit of time in both Los Angeles and Music City, Nashville. The results as far as buys go are reflected in the newsletter. As far as quality goes there has never been a newsletter to rival this one. Don’t take my word though...check it out. In Nashville I was fortunate to see the Timejumpers and also (for the first time) the Grand Ol Opry which had commenced its winter Ryman Auditorium run. Highlight of the latter was Old Crow Medicine Show. They don’t really do anything new but have borrowed well and are just so entertaining. Vince Gill is now a full time member of the Timejumpers but they are equal opportunity employers, so to speak and Vince is an equal member. Ameripolitan Music Awards Country music, the Nashville mainstream variety, has departed so far from “country” music that some are starting to call “country music” as we know it (not as Nashville promotes it) something else.     Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum • Words & Music • Grades 7–12 Kacey Musgraves: Inspired by Small-town Roots By the time she started taking guitar lessons at age twelve, Kacey Musgraves had already been singing in public for four years. But her guitar teacher challenged her to do more than play and sing. “He saw that I dabbled in writing a bit and really pushed me to work on that,” Musgraves said. “So instead of technical stuff, my assignment was to go home and try to write a song. I fell in love with it.” Now an award-winning recording artist, Musgraves has made her mark in country music as much with her writing as with her singing. Her wit and love of clever wordplay have endeared her to fans as well as songwriting greats such as John Prine and Country Music Hall of Fame member Loretta Lynn, two of Musgraves’s musical heroes. Born on August 21, 1988, in the east Texas town of Sulphur Springs, Musgraves grew up in nearby Golden, a town with fewer than two hundred residents. At age eight, she learned to yodel, dressed up in fringed cowgirl outfits, and began performing classic country songs at amateur shows around the area. Her guitar teacher John DeFoore—who also taught Miranda Lambert, another country star from east Texas—set Musgraves on a journey to discover her own country music identity. “When I first started writing my own songs, they were pretty bad,” she said. “I hadn’t found my own voice yet.
