P a g e | 1 Blogs and Websites Basics ABOUT THIS CLASS This class is designed to introduce you to the basic concepts and skills required for starting and maintaining a basic website in the form of a blog. Course Objectives By the end of this course, you will know: The difference between a blog and a website. The difference between hosted and non-hosted sites. What a blogging platform is and how to choose one for your site. How to choose a template (your blog’s appearance). How to post and add pages to your blog. How to avoid making common blogging/website mistakes. Best practices and essential things to know to make your blog/site as successful as possible. This booklet will serve as a guide as we progress through the class, but it can also be a valuable tool when you are working on your own. Any class instruction is only as effective as the time and effort you are willing to invest in it. I encourage you to practice soon after class. There will be additional computer classes in the near future, and I am usually available for questions during Tech Times on Tuesdays (10am-noon) and Thursdays (3pm-5pm). Feel free to call to verify that Tech Time is happening on the day that you’re planning to come. With Linked Data, a very pragmatic approach towards achieving the vision of the Semantic Web has gained some traction in the last years. The term Linked Data refers to a set of best practices for publishing and interlinking struc- tured data on the Web. While many standards, methods and technologies devel- oped within by the Semantic Web community are applicable for Linked Data, there are also a number of specific characteristics of Linked Data, which have to be considered. In this article we introduce the main concepts of Linked Data. We present an overview of the Linked Data lifecycle and discuss individual ap- proaches as well as the state-of-the-art with regard to extraction, authoring, link- ing, enrichment as well as quality of Linked Data. We conclude the chapter with a discussion of issues, limitations and further research and development challenges of Linked Data. This article is an updated version of a similar lecture given at Reasoning Web Summer School 2011. 1 Introduction One of the biggest challenges in the area of intelligent information management is the exploitation of the Web as a platform for data and information integration as well as for search and querying. Just as we publish unstructured textual information on the Web as HTML pages and search such information by using keyword-based search engines, we are already able to easily publish structured information, reliably interlink this informa- tion with other data published on the Web and search the resulting data space by using more expressive querying beyond simple keyword searches. -

There are currently five actively maintained ShEx implementations. Blogging Glossary Glossary: General Terms Atom: A popular feed format developed as an alternative to RSS. Autocasting: Automated form of podcasting that allows bloggers and blog readers to generate audio versions of text blogs from RSS feeds. Audioblog: A blog where the posts consist mainly of voice recordings sent by mobile phone, sometimes with some short text message added for metadata purposes. (cf. podcasting) Blawg: A law blog. Bleg: An entry in a blog requesting information or contributions. Blog Carnival: A blog article that contains links to other articles covering a specific topic. Most blog carnivals are hosted by a rotating list of frequent contributors to the carnival, and serve to both generate new posts by contributors and highlight new bloggers posting matter in that subject area. Blog client: (weblog client) is software to manage (post, edit) blogs from operating system with no need to launch a web browser. A typical blog client has an editor, a spell-checker and a few more options that simplify content creation and editing. Blog publishing service: A software which is used to create the blog. Some of the most popular are WordPress, Blogger, TypePad, Movable Type and Joomla. Blogger: Person who runs a blog. Also blogger.com, a popular blog hosting web site. Rarely: weblogger. Blogroll: A list of other blogs that a blogger might recommend by providing links to them (usually in a sidebar list).
