TheThe Heimlich Maneuver Heimlich Maneuver The Heimlich maneuver is an emergency method of removing food or foreign objects from the airway to prevent suffocation When approaching a choking person, one who is still conscious, ask. "Can you cough? Can you speak?“ If the person can speak or cough, do not perform the Heimlich maneuver or pat them on the back. Encourage them to cough. To Perform the Heimlich Maneuver: o Grasp the choking person from behind; o Place a fist, thumb side in, just below the person's breastbone (sternum), but above the naval; o Wrap second hand firmly over this fist; and o Pull the fist firmly and abruptly into the top of the stomach. o II is important to keep the fist below the chest bones and above the naval (belly button).

o The procedure should be repeated until the airway is free from obstruction or until the person who is choking loses consciousness (goes limp). These will be violent thrusts, as many times as it takes. For a Child: o Place your hands at the top of the pelvis;: o Put the thumb of your hand at the pelvis line; o Put the other hand on top of the first hand; and o Pull forcefully back as many times as needed to get object out or the child becomes limp. Most individuals are fine after the object is removed from the airway. However, occasionally the object will go into one of the lungs. If there is a possibility that the foreign object was not expelled, medical care should be sought.

If the object cannot be removed completely by performing the Heimlich maneuver, immediate medical care should be sought by calling 911 or going to the local 16 emergency room. NBLL Communicable Disease Procedures • While risk of one athlete infecting another with HIV/AIDS during competition is close to non‑existent, there is a remote risk that other blood borne infectious diseases can be transmitted. For example, Hepatitis B can be present in blood as well as in other body fluids. Procedures for reducing the potential for transmission of these infectious agents should include, but not be limited to the following:

• The bleeding must be stopped, the open wound covered and, if there is an excessive amount of blood on the uniform, it must be changed before the athlete may participate.

• Routine use of gloves or other precautions to prevent skin and mucous‑membrane exposure when contact with blood or other body fluids is anticipated.

• Immediately wash hands and other skin surfaces if contaminated (i.e., in contact) with blood or other body fluids. Wash hands immediately after removing gloves. • Clean all contaminated surfaces and equipment with an appropriate disinfectant before competition resumes. • Practice proper disposal procedures to prevent injuries caused by needles, scalpels, and other sharp instruments or devices.

• Although saliva has not been implicated in HIV transmission, to minimize the need for emergency mouth‑to‑mouth resuscitation, mouthpieces, resuscitation bags, or other ventilation devices should be available for use. • Athletic trainers or coaches with bleeding or oozing skin conditions should refrain from all direct athletic care until the condition is resolved. • Contaminated towels should be properly disposed of or disinfected.

• Follow acceptable guidelines in the immediate control of bleeding and when handling bloody dressings, mouth guards and other articles containing body fluids.

*In the past, a solution of one-part chlorine bleach to ten parts water was considered an appropriate disinfectant. However, the use of blood pathogen kits is presently being recommended. The kit contains a liquid antiviral/antibacterial agent which safely neutralizes and kills all blood borne viruses and bacteria that might be present in blood and other bodily fluids. It is to be used on uniforms and other contaminated surfaces. There is also a blood pathogen powder used to neutralize and remove blood and other bodily fluids from field dirt. These agents are much more effective than the bleach mixture, do not damage uniforms and have a "shelf life" of 2 years, whereas the bleach mixture must be prepared on a 17 daily basis. NBLL COVID-19

• Due to the current global COVID-19 pandemic, participation in activities involving other people may put you at risk for contracting COVID-19.

• People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19: • Fever or chills • Cough • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing • Fatigue • Muscle or body aches • Headache • New loss of taste or smell • Sore throat • Congestion or runny nose • Nausea or vomiting • Diarrhea

• Three Important Ways to Slow the Spread • Wear a mask to help stop the spread of COVID-19 to others. • Stay at least 6 feet (about 2 arm lengths) from others who don’t live with you, particularly in crowded areas. • Wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

• If you are experiencing any symptoms on the list above or have known exposure to someone with a confirmed case of COVID-19, you must stay home and refrain from participation which puts others risk for contracting the virus.
