8 2017-2018 Washington ROWING Record book UW ROWING men’s national championships

The Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta (IRA) is the oldest collegiate rowing championship in the country, and remains the premier event for national rowing honors for college men. The first IRA Regatta, on June 24, 1895, was a four-miler between Columbia, the winner, Cornell and Pennsylvania. The regatta grew from that single race in 1895 to include championship competition in eight, four and pair-oared competition at the varsity, second varsity and fresh- men levels for both men and women. Today, the IRA hosts men’s heavyweight and men’s and women’s lightweight championships in a number of categories. The rowing championship is conducted by the Intercollegiate Rowing Association, which was organized at the beginning of the century. Much of the history of the IRA tends to focus on the great crews of Cornell, Navy, Washington and California and their coaches who established impressive winning records at the old regattas at Poughkeepsie and Lake Onondaga. In 1923, Washington, coached by “Rusty” Callow, became the first Western school to win theI RA, followed by another victory in 1926. When Callow left Seattle to coach at Pennsylvania, he was succeeded by his assistant Al Ulbrickson who continued the Husky winning ways with six IRA titles in 1936, 1937, 1940, 1941 and 1948 and 1950. His freshman, junior varsity and varsity crews “swept the river” in 1936, 1937, 1948 and 1950. After competing in the national championships held annually on Lake Harsha in Cincinnati between 1983 and 1994, the UW returned to the IRA for its 100th anni- versary in 1995. In 1997, the Huskies swept top honors in the three featured races for the first time since 1950. In 2007, the Huskies took gold in both the Varsity and Junior Varsity races. They also began their run of nine straight Ten Eyck Award wins, given to the team scoring the most overall points at the regatta. After the 2007 season, Ernst stepped down to coach the women and his former rower and protege, Michael Callhan replaced him. Since Callahan took over the men’s varsity have won six national championships in the last nine years, while finishing second three times. In 2012, the Huskies swept all races at the IRA Regatta, the first team ever to accomplish that feat. The Huskies have also won the freshman eight title for the last six straight years and eight of the last nine, while UW’s second varsity eight has won that title 11 of the last 14 seasons. In 2018, the regatta returns to Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey (June 1-3). Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships Prior to 1982 and since 1995, the Intercollegiate Rowing Association winner has been recognized as the national champion. Below are UW’s finishes in the IRA Championships. The Huskies have won 18 IRA varsity eight national titles. In 2015, Washington became the first team to win five consecutive national titles. HISTORY AT HENLEY The Henley Royal Regatta is the most well known regatta in the world. Founded in 1839, the format at Henley features head-to-head knockout racing over a 1 mile, 550-yard course (2,112 meters). It attracts thousands of visitors over a five-day period as spectators can watch over 200 world-class level races from a field that includes Olympians and national teams.

In 1977, head coach Dick Erickson brought the Huskies back to Henley and Washington became the first U.S. crew in 18 years to win the Grand Challenge when it beat the British national crew by a length. The Huskies also won the Visitors Challenge Cup in 1977, the same event they will be entering in 2015.

In 2003, the Huskies beat Rutgers in the Ladies Challenge Plate final and in 2010, the Huskies’ freshman eight became the first freshman boat from UW to win the Temple Challenge Cup, a competition open to collegiate eights.

The Huskies took second in 2013 in the Grand Challenge Cup to the British National Team. UW matched the course record in the race while Britain set a new record time to beat the Huskies. The British National Team that beat the Huskies went on to win gold at the World Championships that summer. On its way to the final, Washington beat the Polish National Team eight that finished seventh at the 2012 Olympics.

Washington rowers have been a fixture in Olympic competition, dating back to the 1936 men’s eight-oared boat that won the gold medal in Berlin. Altogether, Husky men and women have participated in 15 Olympic Games. In 2016, 12 former Washington rowers traveled to Rio for the Olympics, with eight rowing for the United States and four for Canada. Former Huskies Katelin Snyder and Kerry Simmonds helped the U.S. women’s eight continue its dominance, winning gold, while Canadian Patricia Obee won the silver in the lightweight double sculls. Four Huskies rowed in the U.S. men’s eight, which finished in fourth place. In 2012, nine men and three women rowed in London. Mary Whipple coxed the U.S. women to another gold while Megan Kalmoe and Adrienne Martelli won bronze in the U.S. women’s quad. Huskies Rob Gibson, Will Crothers and Conlin McCabe all rowed in the Canadian eight that won the silver medal, while Scott Gault won bronze with the U.S. men’s open four. Anna (Mickelson) Cummins, Mary Whipple and David Calder became Olympic medalists in 2008 at the Beijing Olympic Games. Cummins and Whipple paired for possibly the last time to win the gold in the women’s eight. Calder and his partner won silver in the men’s coxless pair, earning Canada’s first trip to the medal stand in the 2008 edition of the Games. Also representing the Huskies in Beijing were Scott Gault, Rika Geyser, Rob Gibson, Ante Kusurin, Megan Kalmoe and Giuseppe Lanzone. Washington was represented in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games by David Calder, Michael Callahan, Matt Deakin, Anna Mickelson, Erik Miller and Mary Whipple. Deakin came home with a gold medal with the U.S. men’s eight while Mickelson and Whipple collected silvers with the U.S. women’s eight. Callahan and Miller were spares. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Huskies Marc Schneider, David Calder, Phil Henry and Katie Maloney competed. Schneider’s four without finished sixth in its final while Calder’s Canadian eight won the B final. Henry traveled as a spare. Maloney was a part of the women’s eight that finished sixth in its grand final. In addition, Husky women’s coach Bob Ernst was the course announcer at the rowing venue.
