Now, we have two communications from members which will be interesting reading for many members.

The first is from John Treloar. Researching Joe Gould in the year 1952 writes:

“Researching Joe Gould (selector for the 1952 Eight) came across a video of his eight in 1936 Olympics. Many have read ‘Boys in the Boat’. The stroke of this crew was Kim Mackney’s dad: Walter.

Selectors: B S Williams (NSW), P J Ryan (WA) and Edward Kenny (VIC) Racing The Germans went to a great deal of effort to make the course at Grunau a success, The Germans dominated the regatta with five gold medals. One of the highlights of this regatta was the gold medal performance of Jack Beresford in the double scull. Beresford, in his fifth and at the age of 37, had a tough race against the German combination of Kaidal and Pirsch who had the better of the British crew in the heat. Beresford won a medal in each Games he attended including 3 gold medals. It is only speculation whether a sixth Olympic Games was possible without the intervention of World War 2. The heat result was fair with a fourth placing. The big result was in the repechage with a fine win. The result in the final was a good result bearing in mind Dixon had not sculled before selection. The second is communication from Matthew Duly writing about some of his experiences rowing in Egypt.

“Yes, regarding the 50 year Award, I started coxing at school in 1968 so that makes 50 years this year, but as I have not lived in Australia for over 3 years, I'm not actually involved at the moment.

I lived in Cairo, Egypt for nearly 3 years and did a bit of rowing on the Nile while I was there. Good fun and nice people, but they were more interested in drinking coffee and getting in the post race photographs than actually training. Still it was fun. The boatsheds are interesting; they are all floating boatsheds in the British tradition which makes sense as the Nile rises and falls through the year. The boats are quite a mixture, bit of a boat graveyard really, but with typical Egyptian approach to maintenance (!) they keep them going. In one boatshed I saw a wooden, bow coxed, Empacher eight. Fascinating!

The rowing. I saw an ad for an interclub regatta so I thought I'd have a go. I fronted up at the boatshed and four of us were thrown together. The oars were Croker oars, painted in Balmain Rowing Club colours so I was feeling right at home (my daughter Nell coxed at Balmain for a few seasons). I volunteered to stroke and off we went with the guy behind me translating because the coxswain didn't speak English. Pretty soon I had to stop and explain to the crew that we don't rush up the slide, and we rowed 2 km up the Nile then 2 km back. We got back to the boatshed and the Club Captain, who had been watching, ordered the other 3 out of the boat and put 3 different people in, pointed at me and gave a single instruction "Row like this man!". The Club Captain kept rotating the rowers behind me, but as the sessions went on, they started rowing the way I wanted. So, race day came, there were about 10 crews from about 4 clubs, and my crew won the final. I attach a couple of photos.

I finished in Cairo in June this year, and my wife and I (she is also a Civil Engineer) are now living in Lusaka, Zambia where she is working and I am looking for a job. Zambia is the old Northern Rhodesia. There is no rowing in Lusaka (no river) but a bit at Victoria Falls which are 8 hours drive away. We have been there a few times and visited the Boat Club on the Zambezi River just above the Falls. It appears from the photos on the walls that they were quite active in the past, most recently a few years ago when Oxford, Cambridge, and two South African Universities sent development crews for a 10 day camp there. Must have been fascinating rowing past hippopotami and crocodiles, of which there are plenty in that part of the river. Sadly the Boat Club seems in total athletic abeyance at the moment, although the beer was cold and cheap.

Unfortunately I will be in Lusaka on 9 December and so not able to attend your soiree. Have a great day, and hope to see you on the water when I get back to Australia (whenever that will be).

All the best

Matthew Duly”
