Degree awarded September 2020 ii © 2020 Thomas Evan Fischer iii THESIS ABSTRACT Thomas Evan Fischer Master of Arts Asian Studies Program September 2020 Title: Sun Yat-sens: Contested Images of a Political Icon This thesis explores the afterlives of the Chinese revolutionary icon Sun Yat- sen and their relevant contexts, arguing that these contexts have given rise to different images of the same figure. It serves as a gallery in which these different images are put into conversation with one another, revealing new insights into each. Key to the discussion, Sun is first introduced in a short biography. Then, the thesis moves to his different afterlives: Sun and the fight for his posthumous approval in the Republic of China before 1949; Sun and his usage in Chinese Communist political rhetoric from 1956 through 2016; Sun and his changing image in the ROC-Taiwan, a change that reflects the contentious political environment of an increasingly bentu Taiwan; Sun and two of his images among the overseas Chinese of Hawaii and Penang.

The workshop aims to bring together researchers interested in applying computational techniques to problems in morphology, phonology, and phonetics. Our program this year highlights the ongoing investigations into how neural models process phonology and morphology, as well as the development of finite-state models for low- resource languages with complex morphology. We received 25 submissions, and after a competitive reviewing process, we accepted 14. The workshop is privileged to present four invited talks this year, all from very respected members of the SIGMORPHON community. Reut Tsarfaty, Kenny Smith, Kristine Yu, and Ekaterina Vylomova all presented talks at this year’s workshop. This year also marks the sixth iteration of the SIGMORPHON Shared Task. Following upon the success of last year’s multiple tasks, we again hosted 3 shared tasks: Task 0: SIGMORPHON’s sixth installment of its inflection generation shared task is divided into two parts: Generalization, and cognitive plausibility. In the first part, participants designed a model that learned to generate morphological inflections from a lemma and a set of morphosyntactic features of the target form, similar to previous year’s tasks.

    LAU Koon-wai 劉觀偉（b. 1949.12.20） Director, Cinematographer Lau’s family was originally from Zhongshan, Guangdong, but he was born and raised in Hong Kong. He quit school in Form 3. Since Lau’s father was a filmmaker, he literally ‘grew up’ at Diamond Hill’s Grandview Studio, and later worked as a technician at Chow Sze-ching’s camera equipment shop. He entered the film industry as an assistant cinematographer in 1967, and apprenticed under Japanese cinematographer Nishimoto Tadashi at a time. His first credit as cinematographer was the Taiwanese film 17 Years Desperate Search (1971), directed by Liang Chefu. In 1978, he worked the cameras for Sammo Hung’s Enter the Fat Dragon. From then on, he became a cinematographer Hung came to depend upon, resulting in films such as Warriors Two (1978), Knockabout (1979), The Prodigal Son (1981) and Winners & Sinners (1983); as well as productions of Hung’s Bo Ho Films, such as Pom Pom (1984) and Hocus Pocus (1984). Sammo Hung, Karl Maka, Wu Ma and Barry Wong used to discuss and vex scripts together, which inspired Lau to be a director. Lau’s early works as a director include Crazy Couple (1979) and Two Toothless Tigers (1980). In 1985, he directed the horror-comedy Mr Vampire for Bo Ho Films, which scored HK$20 million, thus starting a craze for vampire films in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Riding on this wave, he followed it with sequels Mr Vampire II (1986), Mr Vampire III (1987) and Mr Vampire Saga IV (1988). After Hung left Golden Harvest, Lau continued to direct films for Hung’s Bojon Films, including Encounter of the Spooky Kind II (1990).

    Barry WONG 黃炳耀（1946.11.24–1991.10.15） Screenwriter, Actor A native of Wuzhou, Guangxi, Wong took up various jobs such as civil servant and secondary school teacher after receiving a fine arts degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He began to write scripts for Commercial Television and ventured into filmmaking in the early 1980s. He penned Read Lips (1980), The Gold-Hunters (1981) and Dragon Lord (1982), produced by Jackie Chan’s Authority Films Ltd. and later worked with Sammo Hung on blockbusters such as The Prodigal Son (1981), Carry On Pickpocket (1982) and The Dead and the Deadly (1982). Winners & Sinners (1983), which he wrote for Hung spawned a lucrative series. It was followed by a trend of vampire films inaugurated by Mr. Vampire (1985), where Wong took part as the production coordinator. Wong’s strength was in comedy, and he was widely celebrated as one of the top-notch screenwriters in Hong Kong. He was best remembered for his long-time collaboration with Sammo Hung, producing a wealth of works for the Hung’s Troupe. He was also a prolific screenwriter who had written works for many different companies. His acclaimed titles include The Other Side of Gentleman (1984), The Haunted Copshop II (1988), Curry and Pepper (1990), Alan & Eric: Between Hello and Goodbye (1991) and Fight Back to School (1991), which brought him multiple nominations for Best Screenplay at the Hong Kong Film Awards. Wong also made occasional film appearances, best known for his part as the superintendent in Fight Back to School (1991).
