Instead of appealing we might use another word . promising” (Luigi Giussani). We all have the intuition that life, even with all its hardships, is fundamentally good. Its appeal is continuously being reawakened by things and people—an appeal we can resist or forget, but never entirely eliminate. Yet we frequently have a hard time seeing the beauty in many aspects of life: family, work, politics, and society—even our own bodies and the very food we eat. We should have goals, but we often don’t know what to do with ourselves. We claim to be in control of our time but are constantly anxious about the future. We think we know how to love but repeatedly feel tossed around and betrayed by our emotions. In the end, we are tempted to construct our own reality to give sense to life. But the reality we try to create, when put to the test of experience, does not deliver on its promises, and too frequently the ensuing frustration turns into anger and violence. Who is someone who has shown that all of life, even with its hardships, is fundamentally good? . To respond to the question with a drawing or an essay, you might think of your own friends or family members, the saints, or a famous person you have learned about in your studies of social studies and language arts. Our exceptional record of negligible losses can be maintained only by your continued cooperation in: Mark EVERYTHING with child’s full name. (Yes, that means every item that child brings - not FIRST: just clothing!) We suggest either a permanent marking pen, such as a “Sharpie”, or iron-on labels. Note: if you choose an iron-on gummed tape, be sure it is of high enough quality to withstand multiple washings and commercial dryers. Write on the “check-list” how many of each article you are sending as you pack it. Do not SECOND: overlook marking and listing clothing and other items worn or carried to camp! Your count will be verified as we unpack the campers, and their possessions will be talliedagain as we pack them up to return home. THIRD: Send the completed list IN THE PACKED BAG. THE SLEEPING BAG: We find it theideal camp bedding. It is easy to make (yes, the campers make their bed neatly each morning!), keeps the campers warm on the cool-ish nights here in the mountains, and can be equipped with a washable liner (which keeps the hygiene level high).     ZUR AUSSTELLUNG Schönheit als Notwendigkeit Gewobenes und Gemaltes aus der Sammlung Otten Bis 29. Juli 2011 Nach Ausstellungen über die Russische Avantgarde und Gottfried Honegger widmet der Otten Kunstraum seine dritte Schau der Gegenüberstellung von Gewobenem und Gemaltem. Die Verbindung von Kunst und Leben, die Frage nach der gesellschaftlichen Relevanz von Kunst sowie eine reduzierte gegenstandsfreie Formensprache verknüpft mit der Suche nach dem Essentiellen – diese Themenstränge ziehen sich wie der sprichwörtliche rote Faden durch die Präsentationen im Otten Kunstraum. Ein Umhang aus Peru gefertigt in der Nasca-Periode im Zeitraum von 200-600 nach Christus, ein Poncho aus Guatemala, faszinierende Seidenstoffe in Ikat-Technik aus Süd-Ost-Asien und Flachgewebe aus Persien werden in der aktuellen Ausstellung gemeinsam mit Malereien und Grafiken von Eduardo Chillida, Marie-Antoinette Courtens, Adolfo Estrada, Helmut Federle, Jakob Gasteiger, Gottfried Honegger, Johannes Itten, Lluis Lleo, Alexander Konstantinow und Sean Scully gezeigt. Die ungewöhnliche Verbindung zwischen gegenstandsfreien modernen und zeitgenössischen Werken und alten Textilien aus unterschiedlichen Kulturkreisen mag auf den ersten Blick erstaunen, zu unterschiedlich scheinen die Beweggründe aus denen heraus die Ausstellungsobjekte entstanden sind. Auf den zweiten Blick eröffnen sich bei aller Verschiedenheit visuelle Verwandtschaften, die erstaunlich sind, und die über den reinen Sehgenuss hinaus zum Nachdenken anregen.
