Instead of appealing we might use another word . promising” (Luigi Giussani). We all have the intuition that life, even with all its hardships, is fundamentally good. Its appeal is continuously being reawakened by things and people—an appeal we can resist or forget, but never entirely eliminate. Yet we frequently have a hard time seeing the beauty in many aspects of life: family, work, politics, and society—even our own bodies and the very food we eat. We should have goals, but we often don’t know what to do with ourselves. We claim to be in control of our time but are constantly anxious about the future. We think we know how to love but repeatedly feel tossed around and betrayed by our emotions. In the end, we are tempted to construct our own reality to give sense to life. But the reality we try to create, when put to the test of experience, does not deliver on its promises, and too frequently the ensuing frustration turns into anger and violence. Who is someone who has shown that all of life, even with its hardships, is fundamentally good? . To respond to the question with a drawing or an essay, you might think of your own friends or family members, the saints, or a famous person you have learned about in your studies of social studies and language arts. Who has been a witness to you of the goodness of life, despite experiences of suffering? www.newyorkencounter.org Contest Poster Rubric CRITERIA SCORE Interpretation • Shows unique and creative Content & Creativity interpretation of the contest (1-4 points) question • Shows organization of art elements, content, & execution to create a striking & memorable work ___ points Composition & • Effectively displays a Supporting Design meaningful composition Information • Effectively fills the entire space (1-4 points) of the 8.5” x 11” page ___ points Craftsmanship • Demonstrates a mastery of skill Writing and a clear response to the Conventions contest question artistically (1-2 points) • The design is beautiful and complete ___ points TOTAL SCORE (Possible 10 points) ___ points www.newyorkencounter.org Contest Essay Rubric CRITERIA SCORE Content • Stays focused on the contest Content question (1-4 points) • Responds to the contest question in 1-3 pages • Writes a complete response in relation to the contest question ___ points Supporting • Includes relevant details and/or Supporting Information appropriate examples to Information support the contest question (1-4 points) • Uses syntax correctly • Arranges writing in a clear and logical order ___ points Writing • Follows rules for grammar and Writing Conventions punctuation Conventions • Uses proper capitalization and (1-2 points) spelling of words ___ points TOTAL SCORE (Possible 10 points) ___ points www.newyorkencounter.org Important Time Change School begins at 8:20 If you drop your child off after this time, please come to the office to sign in.
