Custom Trip Report The Central Chinese province of Sichuan provided some notable challenges this year: still recovering from the catastrophic “Wenchuan 5.12” earthquake of 2008, the area is undergoing massive reconstruction. All very positive for the future of this scenically extraordinary Chinese region, but often a headache for tour arrangements, due to last minute traffic controls leading us to regularly rethink our itinerary in the Wolong area in particular, that was not far from the epicenter of that massive quake. Even in areas seemingly unaffected by the quake, huge road construction projects created similar challenges to achieving our original planned itinerary. However, in spite of regular shuffling and rethinking, the itinerary went ahead pretty much as planned with ALL sites visited. Other challenges came this year in the form of heavy regular rains that plagued us at Wawu Shan and low cloud that limited visibility during our time around the breathtaking Balang Mountain in the Wolong region. With some careful trickery, sneaking our way through week-long road blocks under cover of darkness, birding through thick and thin (mist, cloud and rains) we fought against all such challenges and came out on top. -

The Threatened Species Scientific Committee provided their advice to the Minister on 31 July 2020. The Minister approved this Conservation Advice on 3 December 2020 and agreed that no recovery plan is required at this time. Conservation Advice1 for the Karst springs and associated alkaline fens of the Naracoorte Coastal Plain Bioregion This document combines the approved conservation advice and listing assessment for the threatened ecological community. It provides a foundation for conservation action and further planning. Karst springs and alkaline fens, Ewen Ponds © Copyright, Anthony Hoffman Conservation Status The Karst springs and associated alkaline fens of the Naracoorte Coastal Bioregion is listed in the Endangered category of the threatened ecological communities list under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). The ecological community was assessed by the Threatened Species Scientific Committee, who found it to be eligible for listing as Endangered and recommended that a recovery plan is not required at this time. The Committee’s assessment and recommendations are at Section 6. The Committee’s assessment of the eligibility against each of the listing criteria is: Criterion 1: Vulnerable Criterion 2: Endangered Criterion 3: Insufficient data Criterion 4: Endangered Criterion 5: Insufficient data Criterion 6: Insufficient data The main factors that make the threatened ecological community eligible for listing in the Endangered category are its historic losses to drainage, clearing and resulting fragmentation, and ongoing threats to its integrity and function, particularly from hydrological changes. Dept. of Biology, University of Regina, Regina, SK S4S 0A2, Canada; [email protected] Abstract Energy-conserving torpor is characterized by pronounced reductions in body temperature and metabolic rate and, in Australian birds, is known to occur in the Caprimulgiformes (spotted nightjar, Australian owlet-nightjar, tawny frogmouth), Apodiformes (white-throated needletail) and the Passeriformes (dusky woodswallow). Anecdotal evidence suggests that it also may occur in the white-fronted honeyeater, crimson chat, banded whiteface, red-capped robin, white-backed swallow, mistletoebird, and perhaps welcome swallow. Daily torpor (bouts lasting for several hours) appears to be the most common pattern, although anecdotal evidence indicates that white-backed swallows can undergo prolonged torpor. Diurnal birds enter torpor only during the night but nocturnal birds may use it by the day and/or night, and often in more than one bout/day. Body temperatures fall from ~38–41°C during activity to ~29°C during torpor in spotted nightjars, tawny frogmouths, dusky woodswallows and white-throated needletails, and to ~22°C in Australian owlet-nightjars. In the spotted nightjar, a reduction in Tb by ~10°C resulted in a 75% reduction in metabolic rate, emphasizing energy conservation potential. Since torpor is likely to be more crucial for the survival of small birds, a detailed understanding of its use is important, not only for physiolo- gists but also ecologists and wildlife managers. -

Recent bird records from Fogo, Cape Verde Islands Rubén Baronea and Jens Heringb Observations récentes de Fogo, Îles du Cap-Vert. Des données sont présentées concernant 12 espèces d’oiseaux observées à Fogo, Îles du Cap-Vert, parmi lesquelles deux premières mentions pour l’île (Chevalier gambette Tringa totanus et Hirondelle de fenêtre Delichon urbicum), les premières données de nidification du Martinet du Cap-Vert Apus alexandri et les premières observations fiables du Phaéton à bec rouge Phaethon aethereus indiquant la nidification probable de celui-ci. Des informations sont également présentées sur d’autres taxons mal connus à Fogo, tels que certaines espèces pélagiques et l’Effraie des clochers Tyto alba detorta. Summary. We present data on 12 bird species observed on Fogo, Cape Verde Islands, among them two first records for the island (Common Redshank Tringa totanus and Common House Martin Delichon urbicum), the first breeding records of Cape Verde Swift Apus alexandri and the first reliable observations of Red-billed Tropicbird Phaethon aethereus indicating probable breeding.
