Music: Music and Me (Part 1) Hi everyone! We are going to be exploring our identity through music. Our identity is made up of all the different things that make us who we are. Each one of us is completely unique with our own experiences, feelings, family background and dreams. Music is a brilliant way of exploring and expressing our identity. It gives up confidence, power and purpose. Our gender is also a really important part of our identity. For different reasons, there haven’t been enough women working in the music industry. This is completely unjust, and meant that many women weren’t given a fair chance. People all around the world have been working really hard to change this, and we’re starting to see the results. We are going to look at 4 talented female musicians who are exploring their own musical and cultural identity. You will hear how they got to where they are, and see how you can do the same. You can be part of the change. How exciting! We will invite you to try out some different ways of making your own music and to explore some of the most inspirational and influential women in music from the last 100 years. YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music. -

MA 330.004 / MA430.005 /AMST 341.002 Fall 2016 Revised: 10-7-16 The Cinematic Worlds of Michael Jackson Course Description: From his early years as a child star on the Chitlin’ Circuit and at Motown Records, through the concert rehearsal documentary This is It (released shortly after his death in 2009), Michael Jackson left a rich legacy of recorded music, televised performances, and short films (a description he preferred to “music video”). In this course we’ll look at Jackson’s artistic work as key to his vast influence on popular culture over the past 50 years. While we will emphasize the short films he starred in (of which Thriller is perhaps the most famous), we will also listen to his music, view his concert footage and TV appearances (including some rare interviews) and explore the few feature films in which he appeared as an actor/singer/dancer (The Wiz, Moonwalker). We’ll read from a growing body of scholarly writing on Jackson’s cultural significance, noting the ways he drew from a very diverse performance and musical traditions—including minstrelsy, the work of dance/choreography pioneers like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, and soul/funk legends like James Brown and Jackie Wilson—to craft a style uniquely his own. Crucially, we will ask how Jackson’s shifting public persona destabilize categories of gender, sexuality, and race----in a manner that was very different from his contemporaries: notably, the recently-deceased David Bowie and Prince. Elevated to superstardom and then made an object of the voracious cultural appetite for scandal, Michael Jackson is now increasingly regarded as a singularly influential figure in the history of popular music and culture. -
MTO 11.4: Spicer, Review of the Beatles As Musicians
Volume 11, Number 4, October 2005 Copyright © 2005 Society for Music Theory Mark Spicer Received October 2005 [1] As I thought about how best to begin this review, an article by David Fricke in the latest issue of Rolling Stone caught my attention.(1) Entitled “Beatles Maniacs,” the article tells the tale of the Fab Faux, a New York-based Beatles tribute group— founded in 1998 by Will Lee (longtime bassist for Paul Schaffer’s CBS Orchestra on the Late Show With David Letterman)—that has quickly risen to become “the most-accomplished band in the Beatles-cover business.” By painstakingly learning their respective parts note-by-note from the original studio recordings, the Fab Faux to date have mastered and performed live “160 of the 211 songs in the official canon.”(2) Lee likens his group’s approach to performing the Beatles to “the way classical musicians start a chamber orchestra to play Mozart . as perfectly as we can.” As the Faux’s drummer Rich Pagano puts it, “[t]his is the greatest music ever written, and we’re such freaks for it.” [2] It’s been over thirty-five years since the real Fab Four called it quits, and the group is now down to two surviving members, yet somehow the Beatles remain as popular as ever. Hardly a month goes by, it seems, without something new and Beatle-related appearing in the mass media to remind us of just how important this group has been, and continues to be, in shaping our postmodern world. For example, as I write this, the current issue of TV Guide (August 14–20, 2005) is a “special tribute” issue commemorating the fortieth anniversary of the Beatles’ sold-out performance at New York’s Shea Stadium on August 15, 1965—a concert which, as the magazine notes, marked the “dawning of a new era for rock music” where “[v]ast outdoor shows would become the superstar standard.”(3) The cover of my copy—one of four covers for this week’s issue, each featuring a different Beatle—boasts a photograph of Paul McCartney onstage at the Shea concert, his famous Höfner “violin” bass gripped in one hand as he waves to the crowd with the other. -

He recorded Rainy Night In Georgia, as a duet with Conway Twitty, which earned them a platinum record as well as two Country Music Association Awards nominations. This was Twitty’s last recording. The Grammy Award winner has countless television appearances globally including The Leno Show, Late Night With David Letterman, Later With Jools, The Today Show, Entertainment Tonight, The Grammys and many others.
