Before the Conference 10% of Africa was under colonial rule. By the end of the 19th century, 90% of the continent was under European Rule. 1952 Mau Mau Rebellion heights

Weapons of ● The Bible was used to urge the African to ‘turn the other cheek” cheek in the face of abuse, brutality, and exploitation. It also drove home the message and Against that everything would be good for the brutalized and exploited African in “heaven.” ● The African was associated with the biblical Ham, and the snake that tempted Eve. Accordingly, Colonialism: accepting Christ as the Savior was to save the African from the alleged curses on the descendants of Ham (King, Jr., 1967:72–73). MISSIONS ● The Christian God, Jesus, the saints, and all the apostles were presented as whites with blue eyes EDUCATION + LANGUAGE in the churches. ● African cosmology, religion, spirituality, medicine, music, dances and plastic arts were equated with COMMERCIALIZING LAND the workings of the devil. Consequently, the African converts had to make confessions for observing these to Christian priests in order to be forgiven. Hansberry made Reverend Neilsen as a parallel to Albert Schweitzer. In 1952 he won the Political Radicalism and Artistic Innovation Nobel Peace Prize for his medical missionary in the Gabon territory of West Africa. People around the world appreciated him for bringing “civilization” to “the dark continent” and building a hospital in the jungles of Lambarene. However later people became disillusioned with his real intentions.
