We will not be able to gather in person for Yizkor on the 2nd day of Shavuot, but we will be gathering virtually tomorrow Thursday, May 28 from 6:30- 7:00PM, to recite Yizkor as a community. Rabbi Zirkind will lead us in Yizkor with Divrei Torah and Tefillah similar to a traditional Yizkor service. Page 10 PAGE 2 MESSAGE FROM THE ROSH YESHIVA Sefer Shemos is the story of the emergence of Klal Yisrael from a small tribe of the progeny of Yaakov, to a thriving nation with millions of descendants, who accepted upon themselves the yoke of Torah. It is the story of a nation that went out to a desert and sowed the seeds of the future – a future that thrives to this very day. More than sixty years ago, my grandfather Rav Yaakov Kamenetzky, zt”l, charged my father and mother with the formidable task, “Go to the desert and plant the seeds of Torah.” What started as a fledgling school with six or seven boys, flourished more than a hundred fold. With institutions of tefilah, and higher Torah learning, all the outgrowth of that initial foray into the desert, my father’s impact is not only eternal but ever-expanding. This year’s dinner will mark both the commemoration of those accomplishments and a commitment to the renewal, refurbishment and expansion of the Torah facility he built brick by brick in 1964. M u z y k a l i a VII · Judaica 2 “There on the willows we hung our”…violins: On Old Macewas, Synagogues and Klezmorim∗ B e n j a m i n V o g e l The fragment of the popular Psalm 137 quoted in the title of this essay signals a new path of inquiry investigating musical instruments as symbols in Judaism, more specifically as decorations of tombstones and synagogues in historically Polish lands and as an iconographic resource for research into the history of musical instruments. During the last few centuries, musical instruments appeared very rarely on Jewish tombstones in Central Europe. Starting with the 18th century they were painted more often on walls inside synagogues as illustrations to Psalms 137 and 150. Most of those temples were made of wood and some of stone, but no wooden synagogue and only a dozen or so stone ones survived World War II. However, some archival photographs and paintings still bear witness to better days. Two important questions remains: how accurately do those iconographical sources reflect the instrumentarium used in biblical and later times and how closely do they reflect the instrumentarium used by Jewish (and other) musicians, especially klezmorim at time the images where created? In this essay I will consider mainly the period from the 18th century up to the present, focusing on all the central and eastern historically Polish territories, excluding Silesia and Pomerania where Jewish culture had a different, more assimilated character than in central lands. One must remember that until the 18th century the Polish Kingdom (since the 16th century the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth) included the lands of Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine. -

In the yeshiva, the new year takes on a special meaning as the students and rabbanim prepare not only for the days of awe, but also for the entire learning calendar. The summer has passed and now is time to begin a new cycle of Torah learning. There is no better way to approach learning than hearing the wake up call of the shofar blast in Ellul and greeting the world and Yerushalayim refreshed and energized. íéìùå øé Äî äÈåÉäÀé ø ÇáÀãe ä ÈøÉåú à ÅöÅz ïÉåi ÄvÄî é Äk This summer, in addition to preparing for the arrival of our new talmidim , the faculty pulled its resources to send to all our friends and family divrei Torah from our Beit Midrash. With great pleasure we bring you Torah from Eretz HaTzvi. Eretz HaTzvi has two connotations for us here in the yeshiva – Eretz Yisrael and Yeshivat Eretz HaTzvi and these Torah insights share both meanings. In this modest volume, you will find different styles and approaches to the meaning of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur representing many of the members of the yeshiva faculty. -

Melaveh Malkah 5773 9-Feb-13 Rosh Chodesh Adar 5773 On The Cover Pictured on the cover is the original hand executed papercut entitled “Pitchu Li Sha’arei Tzedek...Open for Me the Gates of Righteousness…” (Tehillim 118:19). Created after the artist was inspired by a beautiful niggun of the Hallel Tefillah, the artwork is modeled after a traditional stone gate and ironwork one might find in the Old City of Yerushalayim. The pesukim describe the Holy City’s special feeling of tranquility and closeness to Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Hand-detailed gold gouache, Hebrew and English calligraphy, assembly and hand-made colored background paper completed the piece. About the Artist Moshe Braun, Sofer STaM and Judaica Artist, RBS-A An artist since early childhood, Moshe attended the University of Michigan School of Art, earning a BFA concentrating in Industrial Design. After studying intensively in Yeshivot, both in the USA and Israel, Moshe trained and became a Sofer Musmach of the Vaad Mishmeret STaM of Jerusalem. Upon moving with his family from Yerushalayim to Ramat Beit Shemesh, Moshe established his studio upstairs in the old Ahavas Sha- lom location. Moshe relies on intuition and inspiration to capture the spirit, beauty and longing, the history and the majesty, of the Jewish People and the Land of Israel. Moshe employs his varied background as an artist, including industrial design, drawing, painting, photography, two and three dimensional design, and Sofrut, to come up with unique visions of expressionistic concepts. Moshe has gained renown for his use of color to communicate feeling and his fine attention to intricate detail. -

259 ‘Till Death Do Us Part: The Halachic Prospects of Marriage for Conjoined (Siamese) Twins By: REUVEN CHAIM KLEIN There are many unknowns when it comes to discussions about Siamese twins. We do not know what causes the phenomenon of conjoined twins,1 we do not know what process determines how the twins will be conjoined, and we do not know why they are more common in girls than in boys. Why are thoracopagical twins (who are joined at the chest) the most com- mon type of conjoinment making up 75% of cases of Siamese twins,2 while craniopagus twins (who are connected at the head) are less com- mon? When it comes to integrating conjoined twins into greater society, an- other bevy of unknowns is unleashed: Are they one person or two? Could they get married?3 Can they be liable for corporal/capital punishment? Contemporary thought may have difficulty answering these questions, es- pecially the last three, which are not empirical inquiries. Fortunately, in 1 R.
