In April of that year, the School of Chemistry (SoC) through the University of Bristol (UoB) submitted a bid to the Stage 1 process, the primary focus of which was to become a CETL in the teaching and learning of practical, laboratory-based chemistry for undergraduates.

  • Tindall's Memories
MEMORIES OF THE PHYSICS DEPARTMENT K. F. Tindall 1 Memories of the Physics Department by K.F. Tindall Foreword My memories of life at the H.H.Wills Physics Laboratory in the University of Bristol span forty-one years. There are gaps, for I was not there for the whole of that period; indeed, in 1940, although I was in the building, I was there as an Admiralty visitor, and between 1949 and 1951 I was at St Mary's Hospital Medical School, Paddington. The urge to record some of the happenings in the department over the years has been with me for a long time. I promised myself I would do it when I retired but other interests affected my motivation. In December, 1989, I met Professor Thompson in the laboratory who asked me if I'd started writing. When I said I was thinking about it he encouraged me greatly, saying, "GET ON WITH IT!" I have tried to verify all facts and dates and am very grateful to all my colleagues throughout the University who have supplied information. From outside the department those whom I thank include Sir Alfred Pugsley, Mr.Evan Wright, Mrs.Molly Sanders, Chris Harries and Brian Jenkins. Don Carleton advised me to include everything I could remember. I have followed his advice but there are bound to be omissions. My thanks certainly go to Eleanor, my wife, who has not only tolerated my disappearing from the domestic scene for hours at a time while I applied fingers to keyboard, but has aided my memory and criticised, helpfully, my results.

Introduction The successful outcome of the Stage 1 and Stage 2 Bids for the School of Chemistry to become a Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) funded Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) was announced in January 2005. Bristol ChemLabS (Bristol Chemical Laboratory Sciences), the only CETL (of 74) devoted to chemistry, officially started on 1 April 2005 with funding for five years. Funding was awarded in two categories, namely £2m for capital projects and £2.5m for recurrent costs over the five years, details of which are presented in Section 6. The premise of both bids was that Bristol ChemLabS would build on the demonstrable excellence already established in undergraduate chemistry teaching in the School of Chemistry and would further develop flexible, modern facilities and processes for learning chemistry's core practical element.

The partnership launched in 2019 with a Climate Challenge project to address the challenges we are all facing in terms of the climate crisis and environmental breakdown. Head teachers at partner schools agreed to support this project as a response to the climate emergency declared by Bristol’s Mayor, the aspiration to make Bristol carbon neutral by 2030 and the school climate strikes which have indicated the concern that children and young people feel about this issue. The partnership was fortunate in receiving a grant from OVO Foundation to carry out this project. This report outlines the activities undertaken across the partnership as part of the project, key achievements, the challenges and lessons learned and recommendations in terms of next steps. The projects carried out in individual partner schools are included at Appendix 1.
