Both the riders and fans eagerly look forward to the Omloop, which belongs to the elite club of WorldTour races. We are all set to add a new chapter in 2021. The cycling city of Ghent will remain the backdrop for the entrance of the World Tour racers on Belgian soil, with the finish in Ninove and the legendary Muur van Geraardsbergen/Bosberg duo in the final, will certainly promise a great spectacle! Ninove, a city that breathes racing, is eager after seven years to welcome back the cycling pack and celebrate the first cycling champions of the season on the podium. Next to the men, we see the absolute top of the world in women’s cycling compete for the 15th time in their Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Combine that with a generous serving of heroism and a lively atmosphere, and you’re all ready for the new cycling season.     Gent de wieg van het Belgische wielrennen Dat België internationaal op de wielerkalender staat, is in niet onbelangrijke mate te danken aan Gent. Niet alleen werd hier exact 150 jaar geleden de allereerste wielerwedstrijd op Belgische bodem verreden, ook staat hier de wieg van nagenoeg elke belangrijke Belgische klassieker. Zo werd in 1913 de eerste editie verreden van de Ronde van Vlaanderen met start op de Korenmarkt en aankomst op de wielerpiste van Mariakerke. Later kwamen daar nog de spraakmakende klassiekers Gent-Wevelgem en de Omloop Het Volk, alias Gent-Gent, bij. Zelfs een wielergrootheid als de Fransman André Darrigade, die in 1958 de tweede Tourrit met aankomst in Gent won, liet er geen twijfel over bestaan: “Gent is dé wielerstad van Vlaanderen”. In niet onbelangrijke mate dankt Gent die eer aan de aanwezigheid van Het Kuipke en de zesdaagse die daar gereden wordt. ”. Ook vandaag is er in Gent geen gebrek aan infrastructuur. Het Vlaams Wielercentrum Eddy Merckx aan de Blaarmeersen, waar in 1988 het WK baanwielrennen plaatsvond, is een ideale locatie voor topsport en jeugdopleiding. Van 9 tot 14 juli 2019 vinden in het wielercentrum trouwens de Europese Kampioenschappen Baanwielrennen voor Junioren & U23 plaats. De allereerste wielerwedstrijd op Belgische bodem werd exact 150 jaar geleden in Gent verreden. Uit het onderzoek van Pascal Delheye (Etappe #6, 2017) bleek dat de eerste wielerwedstrijd op Belgische bodem in Gent werd verreden op 11 april 1869. Het wielerfeest had eigenlijk al moeten plaatsvinden op 29 maart 1869 (Paasmaandag), maar kon niet doorgaan op die datum omdat er – volgens de Gazette van Gent1 – te veel volk aanwezig was: “Dikwijls ziet men feesten mislukken, omdat ze geenen bijval onder het publiek vinden, maar zelden maakt een feest fiasco uit hoofde van te veel deelneming van wege het publiek.

I hopped on my bike and rode to my friend Steve’s house. It was spring break and I was home from college with no particular plans, so falling back on my high school routines was like slipping into an old sweatshirt. Those routines consisted of gathering across town -- biking on the nice days -- at either Steve’s house or another friend’s, and if anything like a quorum could be found, basketball or football or some warped rendition of baseball would happen.
