Store deler av verdenseliten stiller til start, og man får en bra pekepinn på hvem som er i form foran sykkelsesongen. Norge stiller med flere sterke ryttere. Thor Hushovd er en av favorittene og har et bra BMC-lag i ryggen. Både Edvald Boasson Hagen og Gabriel Rasch kjører også i år for Team Sky, mens Alexander Kristoff fra Katush har allerede en etappeseier fra årets Tour of Oman. Lover bra Sykkelkommentator i Viasat Sport HD, Kjell-Erik Kristiansen, har stor tro på de norske utøverne i år. - Thor Hushovd kjørte 16 mil i utbrudd i Tour de Haut Var i forrige uke, og han støtet i fra sine utbryterkolleger og kjørte flere mil alene foran feltet. Det lover bra. Hagen viste ikke like bra form i fjor som tidligere år, men han vil nok gjerne vise lagledelsen i Sky hva han kan i år, sier Kristiansen. Hard konkurranse De norske rytterne vil få hard konkurranse om seieren i Omloop Het Nieuwsblad blant annet fra Tom Boonen og Luca Peolini. Boonen har til tross fjorårets katastrofesesong imponert hittil i år. Paolini vant fjorårets ritt. - Dette blir et svært spennende og åpent ritt med flere mulig vinnere, også et par av de norske, sier Kristiansen.     Gent de wieg van het Belgische wielrennen Dat België internationaal op de wielerkalender staat, is in niet onbelangrijke mate te danken aan Gent. Niet alleen werd hier exact 150 jaar geleden de allereerste wielerwedstrijd op Belgische bodem verreden, ook staat hier de wieg van nagenoeg elke belangrijke Belgische klassieker. Zo werd in 1913 de eerste editie verreden van de Ronde van Vlaanderen met start op de Korenmarkt en aankomst op de wielerpiste van Mariakerke. Later kwamen daar nog de spraakmakende klassiekers Gent-Wevelgem en de Omloop Het Volk, alias Gent-Gent, bij. Zelfs een wielergrootheid als de Fransman André Darrigade, die in 1958 de tweede Tourrit met aankomst in Gent won, liet er geen twijfel over bestaan: “Gent is dé wielerstad van Vlaanderen”. In niet onbelangrijke mate dankt Gent die eer aan de aanwezigheid van Het Kuipke en de zesdaagse die daar gereden wordt. ”. Ook vandaag is er in Gent geen gebrek aan infrastructuur. Het Vlaams Wielercentrum Eddy Merckx aan de Blaarmeersen, waar in 1988 het WK baanwielrennen plaatsvond, is een ideale locatie voor topsport en jeugdopleiding. Van 9 tot 14 juli 2019 vinden in het wielercentrum trouwens de Europese Kampioenschappen Baanwielrennen voor Junioren & U23 plaats. Uit het onderzoek van Pascal Delheye (Etappe #6, 2017) bleek dat de eerste wielerwedstrijd op Belgische bodem in Gent werd verreden op 11 april 1869.     A day out at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad So under the disguise of an educational trip to see some World War 1 stuff around Ypres, we made the first pilgrimage of the road season to Vlaanderen for the "Openings weekend”. Having decided we were “on a budget’ the decision to take the ferry wasn’t looking good when it took 2 hours to negotiate the Dartford Crossing on Friday tea time. Obviously we missed the sailing but were lucky to be given a free ticket for the next one (doesn’t always happen on the ferries!) and finally arrived in De Panne about 2am. The idea of heading to Ghent for the start of the Omloop was quickly aborted on Saturday in return for an extra hour in bed. So our first rendez vous with the racing was the women’s peloton heading over the Nokereberg, their first climb on the day. What was immediately obviously was the anarchic style of racing over the cobbles even compared to the men. It really was every women for herself with some riders aiming for the smooth guttering (on both sides of the road here) or trying to bludgeon a way right through the middle of the big (but nicely formed) stones. For a large number, after only 20km, the day was already almost done. They were out the back never to come back... Then it was back in the car for a bit of a rally drive down the back roads of the Vlaamse Ardennen to the Haaghoek for the first passage of the men’s race.

I hopped on my bike and rode to my friend Steve’s house. It was spring break and I was home from college with no particular plans, so falling back on my high school routines was like slipping into an old sweatshirt. Those routines consisted of gathering across town -- biking on the nice days -- at either Steve’s house or another friend’s, and if anything like a quorum could be found, basketball or football or some warped rendition of baseball would happen. But on this day there was no quorum. Steve was home, hanging in his room, watching TV. “Check this out,” he said1 as he flicked on CBS Sports, showing a bike race from France. I’d caught a glimpse of the Tour de France before, enough to know the name and register some basic comprehension of the need for some people to race their bikes.
