Warriors as the Feminised Other The study of male heroes in Chinese action cinema from 2000 to 2009 A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Chinese Studies at the University of Canterbury by Yunxiang Chen University of Canterbury 2011 i Abstract ―Flowery boys‖ (花样少年) – when this phrase is applied to attractive young men it is now often considered as a compliment. This research sets out to study the feminisation phenomena in the representation of warriors in Chinese language films from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland China made in the first decade of the new millennium (2000-2009), as these three regions are now often packaged together as a pan-unity of the Chinese cultural realm. The foci of this study are on the investigations of the warriors as the feminised Other from two aspects: their bodies as spectacles and the manifestation of feminine characteristics in the male warriors. This study aims to detect what lies underneath the beautiful masquerade of the warriors as the Other through comprehensive analyses of the representations of feminised warriors and comparison with their female counterparts. It aims to test the hypothesis that gender identities are inventory categories transformed by and with changing historical context. Simultaneously, it is a project to study how Chinese traditional values and postmodern metrosexual culture interacted to formulate Chinese contemporary masculinity. It is also a project to search for a cultural nationalism presented in these films with the examination of gender politics hidden in these feminisation phenomena. With Laura Mulvey‘s theory of the gaze as a starting point, this research reconsiders the power relationship between the viewing subject and the spectacle to study the possibility of multiple gaze as well as the power of spectacle. -

Introduction Our group was assigned to visit Bao Gong Temple, which is part of the Jalan Kayu Joint Temple located at 70 Sengkang West Avenue. Despite the small scale, it is regarded as a holy place by numerous worshippers and it is the only temple named after Bao Gong among all the Singapore temples consecrating him. The Bao Gong Temple Council have dedicated considerable efforts to public welfare which attracted more devotees. They even supervised a publication of The Book for the Treasures of Singapore Bao Gong Temple (《新加坡包公庙典藏书》) in 2015 to further spread Bao Gong culture and to document the history of the temple. The Folk Belief in Bao Gong The belief of Bao Gong was derived from the folklores of Bao Zheng (999-1062). Born in Hefei, Bao Zheng started rendering government service in 1037 and gained continuous promotion from the then highest ruler, Emperor Renzong of Song in the next 26 years. Among all his political achievements, he was most well-known for the impartial adjudication when he served as the mayor of Kaifeng (the capital of Northern Song). Remediating corruption and impeaching guilty nobles, Bao Zheng always upheld the interests of the masses, was loyal to the nation and disciplined himself. -

Journal of Literature and Art Studies, April 2016, Vol. 6, No. 4, 340-355 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2016.04.002 D DAVID PUBLISHING The Political Aspect of Misogynies in Late Qing Dynasty Crime Fiction Lavinia Benedetti University of Catania, Catania, Italy In most Chinese traditional court-case narrative, women often serve as negative social actors, and may even be the alleged cause of the degeneration of men’s morality as the result of their seductiveness. In the late Qing Dynasty novel Digong’an, centred on the upright official Digong, there is strong evidence of misogyny by the author. Two female characters stand out from the story: one kills her husband with the help of her lover, who is partially justified by the latter being under the woman’s negative influence; and the other is Empress Wu, to whom the moral downfall of the Tang Dynasty is attributed. Both women are subject to insult and threat throughout the novel. The author’s attitude substantially relies on the sexist rhetoric prevalent in the Confucian idea of an ordered society, which usually took a negative outlook towards women partaking in public life. But for the latter we should also take in account that at the end of the Qing Dynasty a woman was, in reality, ruling the empire “from behind the curtain”. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to deconstruct the author’s misogyny, in order to shed a light on his criticism and connect it with a somewhat more political discourse. THE POLITICS OF DREAMING – FROM DIDEROT TO KEATS ming AND SHELLEY [ Dreaming, seemingly a private activity, can exhibit political and ideological dimensions. ALAN RICHARDSON ABSTRACT The first part of this article looks at the ideological significance, within late Enlighten- ment and Romantic-era culture, of the very activity of dreaming, with particular reference to Diderot’s Le Rêve de d’Alembert. Nocturnal dreaming and the somnambulistic behaviors closely associated with dreaming can and did challenge orthodox notions of the integral ] subject, of volition, of an immaterial soul, and even of the distinction between humans and animals. The second half of the article looks at two literary dreams, from the poetry of Shelley and Keats, considering how represented dreams can have pronounced ideological and political valences. The article as a whole illustrates the claims and methods of cognitive historicist literary critique. KEYWORDS Poetry, dreams, neurology, John Keats, P. B. Shelley. ‘In Dreams Begin Responsibilities’, Delmore Schwartz’s oblique and compact coming of age narrative, remains one of the most compelling American short stories of the last century. Its coolly seductive hold on the reader begins with its title, which Schwartz borrowed from an epigraph to W. B. Yeats’s poetic volume Responsibilities, ‘in dreams begins responsibility’, attributed by Yeats in turn to an ‘Old Play’ (98). Whatever the title’s ultimate provenance, its juxtaposition of dream and responsibility instantly sets us pondering: how could dreams, invol- untary, cryptic and unpredictable, generate anything like duties and obligations? The juxtaposition of politics and dreaming in this essay’s title seeks to pro- voke a similar unsettling of categories and rethinking of conceptual boundaries. -
