Beginning Directing solidifying the director’s role: interpretation of the text and its unification with the other elements of production. establishing the focus/super-objective. rehearsal/production process and preparation. providing effective tools for communication and coaching actors. Advanced Directing dreaming and defining. how to make a mental vision a practical reality. working with and adding to the director’s toolbox: blocking, composition, rhythm, focus, language, energy, style and mood. combining knowledge of design elements to strengthen and clarify the production. Script/Text Analysis thoroughly examining the elements of primary and secondary texts: title, setting, plot, language, characters, theme, etc. (comparisons of multiple translations/tellings of a story, and analysis of text through marginalized lenses) focusing on actor/ director breakdowns of the text to determine beats for effective rehearsal process and technique. Dramatic Literature focus on storytelling. what makes a good “story?” defining dramatic literature and the evolving cannon. looking at theatrical texts that refer to and reflect theatre. understanding dramatic stories through a study of their multiple tellings. Black Theater identifying major players and companies in black theater history. isolating social and political expectations surrounding creation and delivery of characters and performance. focus on TOBA and Chitlin’ circuits, minstrelsy, evolution to Broadway performances and success, and to current roles, performances, and players in contemporary black theater. Theatre History surveying the theory and practice of theatre through a diverse study of plays and theatre artists. understanding the progression of theatre since the advent of the “fourth wall.” (course can be adapted to fulfill academic requirements) Modern Drama surveying the significant events, theories, plays, and personalities that have contributed to the development of 20th century theatre in America, Britain, and Europe. focus on representative writers, thinkers, and theatre companies whose contributions have shaped our contemporary theatre. Contemporary Drama looking at new and current scripts and trends. evaluating the historical canon in relation: what has now been added? focusing on the multi-cultural developments in theatre. Dramaturgy what is a dramaturg? defining the many roles and responsibilities of the dramaturg. learning the history and development of the position. effective approaches and research methods. creating useful process-oriented material: fables, storyboards, textual breakdowns, and final scripts. Non-Profit Arts Management recognizing the nonprofit sector’s roles, laws, and structure, and how to construct and work with a board of directors. establishing purpose, mission, and vision. understanding strategic planning for nonprofit arts organizations. constructing and working within a realistic program/season and budget. Business of Theatre realizing the role of the working artist, and appropriate sources for information. learning how to “do the homework” and to be prepared. establishing contacts, proposing productions. preparing and supplementing headshots, resumes, and cover letters. developing interviewing skills. Introduction to Drama preparing both future theatre artists and theatre audiences. using theatrical texts to stimulate dialogue. encouraging students to respond to the material in their own voices, and to make the connections obvious between similar texts and within their own society. Women in Theatre studying the history of the major contributions of women in theatre. understanding the historical and contemporary impacts of feminism, and surveying the female producers, directors, playwrights, and actresses currently shaping contemporary theatre. Queer Theatre from the Greeks to our contemporary ‘gay:’ creating a working definition of ‘queer’ in theatrical and social history, text and performance. understanding the role of dramatic literature, authors and components of recent queer theater history.. Theory and Criticism establishing the nature of theatricality. creating a working lexicon. learning theoretical origins and developments. isolating and applying theoretical readings to chosen texts. focus on semiotics, hermeneutics, and on newer postmodern approaches and theories. Beginning Acting understanding acting vocabulary: behavior, text/subtext, objective/obstacle, verb use, given circumstances. respecting the actor’s body and voice as an instrument, making honest choices, & appreciating thorough character development.
