Abstract During last three years increase in dengue incidence was reported from Silvasssa city and adjoining area. We analyzed incidence to determine the occurrence of cases, investigate its causes, and recommend preventative measures for the control. Blood samples were collected from 1583 patients experiencing febrile illness clinically consistent with dengue infection. Serological confirmation of Dengue Infection was done using Dengue ELISA test which detected dengue-specific NS1 antigen, IgM antibody and IgG antibody. Out of 1583 suspected cases, 186 cases (11.75%) were confirmed as serologically positive.

  • Dr. Lohia and Goa – the Struggle for Liberation Against Portuguese Rule
CHAPTER TWO THE STRUGGLE FOR LIBERATION AGAINST PORTUGUESE RULE Once the Goan parliamentarian Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes, somewhere in Paris said in 1861 the following; ' I belong to that race which composed the Mahabharata and invented chess.....but this nation which recorded her laws in poems and formulated her politics in the rules of a game, exists no longer. Here lies, chained in her own country exhausted from all her fecundity and in obscurity amidst the dazzling brilliance of her own glory.' The person who talked about his country with so much pride was none other than an Indian by heart, by mind and body, a Catholic by religion, a Portuguese by a quirk of history, a nationalist by spirit, who was dedicated to the cause of his country, who did not identify any difference between Goa and the rest of India and Portuguese in Goa. Can Goa be separated from rest of India just because Britishers ruled in India and Portuguese in Goa? The answer to this question is `no'. Goa was considered an integral part of India not only geographically but from all other aspects. The entire liberation struggle of Goa, was influenced by the Indian National Movement, especially the last phase, beginning with the 18th June 1946 movement for civil liberties. Since Goa was considered as an integral part of India, people of Goa thought that without the liberation of Goa, the Indian struggle for Independence is incomplete. Thus the two main demands in the liberation struggle of Goa were; (i) Liberation of Goa from Portuguese colonial rule, and (ii) its integration with the Indian Union.

BACKWARD REGION GRANT FUND (2007-08 to 2011-12) ================================================================================= CHAPTER - 1 District - Balaghat - 1 - ============================================================= BACKWARD REGION GRANT FUND (2007-08 to 2011-12) ================================================================================= INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKWARD REGION GRANT FUND SCHEME The regional variations in the nature, content and pace of development in the country have resulted in the emergence of sub-regional pockets of endemic poverty which is both Structural (degraded resource base) and systemic (poor capital formation) in character. These pockets fall in districts that are mainly inhabited by tribal population which resorts to large scale seasonal migration for a substantial part of the year to cope with household food insecurity. The Govt. of India took cognizance of this phenomenon and employed the criteria of prevalence of poverty indicated by SC/ST population, agriculture productivity per worker and agriculture wage rate to identify most backward districts in the country. The Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India launched the Backward Region Grant Fund Scheme (BRGF) as a centrally sponsored scheme on a cost-sharing basis between the center and the states with the aim is to enhance the livelihood security of the people in rural areas by generating wage employment through works that develop the infrastructure base of that area. 1. Objectives 1.1 The backward Region Grant Fund has been designed to address the issue of increasing regional imbalance in development. It is an initative prompted by the need for the Centre and States to work together to promote growth with equity. It aims at catalyzing development in districts identified as backward by promoting good governance, making well directed investments in infrastructure, ensuring delivery of essential services such as health and education and providing better livelihood opportunities for people, keeping in mind local resources and skill endowments.
