InterMarque Monthly, May, 2005, page 2 Go-KartGo-KartGo-Kart ChallengeChallengeChallenge March 19 On March 19, about 30 gung-ho racers and a few gung-whoa wannabees gathered at Pro Kart Indoors in Maple Grove for the annual Go Kart Challenge. Minne- sota Jaguars hosted the event and invited other “vintage” car clubs to compete. Last year the team prize went to the BMW club. Who took it this year? Read on and find out. Jeff Ophoven, owner of Pro-Kart In- doors, held up the caution flag and told the racers what they had bet- ter do if they see it: “Slow Down. There’s a prob- lem on the track and the course workers do not want to get run over.” Jeff also showed the kartists the “move over and let somebody pass flag.” He said it’s no big deal. Not everyone believed him. Looking on is Dave Meek, who did a heck of a job putting this event together. To the left two unidentified rac- ers battle it out on their last ses- sion on the track. One tip from Jeff was to lean to the outside of the curve while you are cor- nering. This is the opposite of what your inner ear tells you to do, but it puts more weight on the outside tires and they are less likely to hop and skip. The racers testified that it worked. InterMarque Monthly, May, 2005, page 3 Right: Lotus devotee Tim Engel shows racers the best “line” for fastest speed. Below: Racers line up for their next outing. Always watch out for people who bring their own helmets. It’s like going to the pool hall and playing with the guy with his own cue. Don’t bet money on the outcome. Note video cam! Nov - Dec 2016 (Click on photos to enlarge, or click on images below to go to website) HOOSIER MGs WEB FROM THE EDITOR It’s that time. The leaves are changing and you can feel the chill on the air. The Covered Bridge cars have been streaming down West Highway 36 for more than a week and I’m sure they are coming from all directions of the compass. Chris and I decided it was time to get EVENT CALENDAR rid of some of those treasured items we had at the house. You know the ones, that haven’t moved in the past 20 years. We were going to have a “Garage Sale.” I cleaned out the garage and parked the MGBGT in the driveway so I could fill the garage with those treasures and waited for the crowds of people. My neighbor was having a sale as well so I was secure in the fact that I was soon to be swimming in extra money. You know, like Uncle Scrooge in his money bin. As people came up my driveway HOOSIER MGS to the garage they either stopped or slowed to admire the GT. Next came the litany of questions about the car and if it was for OOOI Chairman: sale. At first I was delighted to hear the stories they told of their Greg Peterson [email protected] experiences with MG’s or the OOOI Treasurer: questions they asked. Almost Kathy Kubick always I was asked “Are you [email protected] selling the car,” and “How much Hoosier A’s President: are you asking for it?” What was Steve Hully a person to do? I was here to sell [email protected] my wares and not discuss my MGB.

  • Chinese Capability Development Through the Acquisition of MG Rover
Birmingham Business School Discussion Paper Series Title: The making of an innovative multinational firm: Chinese capability development through the acquisition of MG Rover Author: Simon Collinson Discussion Paper: 2013-04 The making of an innovative multinational firm: Chinese capability development through the acquisition of MG-Rover Simon Collinson Birmingham Business School University of Birmingham Email [email protected] Abstract This paper examines the transfer, replication and adaption of knowledge, assets and capabilities in MG Rover from the British workforce to the new Chinese owners and employees at Nanjing Automotive Corporation (NAC). The study explores the intra- organisational processes adopted to integrate knowledge, innovation-related routines and networks. We identify distinctive mechanisms for both ‘discrete’ transfers and ‘cumulative’ flows of knowledge and capabilities, with different kinds of impact on the innovative capacity of the recipient firm. With the more recent take-over of NAC by SAIC the MG-NAC restructuring is examined as part of the broader evolution of a large, innovative and multinational Chinese car firm. The study also provides insights into the changing complementarities between Western and Chinese manufacturers and lessons for managers regarding effective alignment with evolving competitors. • Wheels-Alive Visits MG at Longbridge, Birmingham
www.wheels-alive.co.uk Wheels-Alive visits MG at Longbridge, Birmingham Published: 26th November 2014 Author: Kim Henson Online version: https://www.wheels-alive.co.uk/wheels-alive-visits-mg-at-longbridge-birmingham/ Some 90 years after Cecil Kimber created the first MGs, Kim Henson makes a pilgrimage to the Birmingham factory where today’s cars bearing the MG name are assembled… Kim Henson visited MG’s home at Longbridge, Birmingham for ‘Wheels- Alive’, and test-drove a prototype of the firm’s new ‘Electric Vehicle Concept’ car. He is seen here with a new MG3 Before we start, I have to confess to rather more than just a slight personal interest in the factory where the current range of MGs is assembled, and in the adjacent Technical Centre where the cars were designed and developed by a British team… www.wheels-alive.co.uk You see, I own some 15 vehicles that were built in the Longbridge plant, formerly home for many decades to the Austin Motor Company. Indeed, ‘The Austin’, as it was known locally, is the place where iconic models were produced in their millions. These include the famous pre-War Austin Seven (which in fact saved the company) and an amazing number of post- War models, from the A40s introduced in the late 1940s, to the Cambridges and larger models of the 1950s/60s. There followed a variety of Austin-Rover/British Leyland models, then Rovers and MGs of the 21st Century, until sadly the plug was pulled in the spring of 2005 when the cash finally ran out.

  • Morris Garages Ltd, Then Morris Motors
Official name: Morris Garages Ltd, then Morris Motors, then The Nuffield Organisation, then British Motor Corporation, then British Motor Holdings, Leyland Motor Corporation, British Leyland Motor Corporation, British Leyland Limited, Austin Rover Group, then Rover Group, then MG Rover. The company went bankrupt in 2005. Owned by: Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation. Current situation: MGs are now built in China, with a few assembled at the old MG factory in England. However, many car designs are very old and all are poorly built. MG has not been a a big hit in China and sales outside China have been dreadful. Chances of survival: poor. SAIC is staying alive thanks to Chinese government handouts and joint ventures with Western companies. If MG’s new owners are relying on Western sales to prosper, they are probably in for a lonely old age • 1 All content © The Dog & Lemon Guide 2016 • All rights reserved A brief history of MG (and why things went so badly wrong) WAS ORIGINALLY an abbreviation MGof Morris Garages. Founded in 1924 by William Morris, MG sportscars were based on the basic structure of Morris’s other cars from that era. MGs soon developed a reputation for being fast and nimble. Sales boomed. Originally owned personally by William Morris, MG was sold in 1935 to the Morris parent company. This put MG on a sound financial footing, but also made MG a tiny subsiduary of a major corporation.
