a bigger table 2016 - 2017 EVERYONE IS INVITED TO OUR TABLE. Since its inception in 1998, Second Helpings has fought to create a bigger table in Central Indiana. As we approach our 20th anniversary, our volunteers and staff now prepare and deliver more than 4,000 meals each day to 85 not for profit organizations across Central Indiana. That’s 1 million healthy, delicious meals served to our most vulnerable neighbors each year, strengthening the bodies and minds of those who receive them and the bottom lines of the organizations who serve them. Creating a bigger table means providing more opportunities for local residents to transform their lives. Through the Culinary Job Training program, Second Helpings continues to attack hunger at its source by providing a path to self-sufficiency for unemployed and underemployed adults. Today, a new class graduates every month to find new careers and more promising futures. Best of all, as their careers progress, they return to share their stories, inspire new generations of students, and pay it forward by offering job opportunities to those who are just beginning their journey. As the hundreds of names in this annual report will confirm, the work to welcome more of our neighbors to our bigger table requires the support and commitment of an entire community. To be sure, the network of people and organizations who make the mission possible extends well beyond the pages of this annual report. This report contains only some of the financial donors, food donors and in-kind supporters who each further the work of Second Helpings as they are able. Notably absent are thousands of dedicated volunteers, including chefs and musicians who make our fundraising events the best in the city, restaurant managers who hire our graduates to staff their kitchens and so many more. This network of committed supporters is the lifeblood of Second Helpings, and it will continue to serve as the foundation for a bigger table in Central Indiana as we celebrate our 20th year of service.
