The achievements of the club have been nothing short of fantastic and it’s been a privilege to have been involved. I’d like to express my thanks to the Committee, for all their hard work, effort and dedication to make this year a memorable one for all involved. Thanks to the spouses & partners of our coaching staff who have supported them throughout the year so that they could put the huge effort that they have into their teams on training nights and match days. I’d also like to thank all the parent volunteers who helped with numerous tasks on training nights and match days, without that support from parents the club would struggle. The season began well with signs of a great year after the Lightening Premiership where all four teams played very well. At the end of the season we had our U12’s, U14’s and U16’s all playing in the Grand Final. Congratulations to our U12’s team who won every game, including the Grand Final. The time and effort that Max Cunico, Stan Lazaris, Julie Scott and Andrew Jenkins put into their team was tremendous. Our U14’s and U16’s played great football all year and all players from both of these teams should be very proud of how much they have all improved over the season and for getting into the Grand Final. Whilst both teams were defeated they all put in hard on the day and were courageous in their tackling and chasing down the ball. I can’t wait to see the teams play next year as I think they will only become stronger and more skilled and will be hard to beat. Thanks to the coaching staff of both teams who have all been dedicated and supportive of each other in making the player’s football experience an enjoyable one. Congratulations also to our U10’s team who, in comparison to season 2007, had a great year with a number of great wins. Season 2009 looks promising for this team. We also started the year well when the club purchased new equipment for training sessions and match days. A number of fund-raising activities were held over the season with a bus trip to the MCG to watch the Tigers maul the Mighty Hawks. This was a big hit with those who went on the trip. Because the trip went so well, the committee are looking at doing something similar next year. I also had the privilege to be President of the club in the year that it celebrated its 25th Anniversary. A dinner was organised by the 25th Anniversary Sub-committee and the night was one to remember. It was a pleasure to meet the Club’s Life Members and past players and their families. Overall, the night was a great success and I pass on my sincerest appreciation to the 25th Anniversary Sub-committee for doing a fantastic job in preparing for and organising the night. Whilst we didn’t have any league Best & Fairest winners, our players polled well and everyone should be proud of their great efforts during the season. I hope all of the players enjoyed their year at West End JFC and I hope to see you all again next year. Terry Spector President West End JFC – 2008 Yearbook Page 3 Of Treasurer’s Report In the 25th Year of the West End JFC, the Club had a successful and productive year financially. At the beginning of the 2007-2008 season, we had an opening bank balance of $8,823.66 and concluded with a balance of $12,210.10. West End JFC registered 89 players this season, for a total of $6,640 in Registration Fees. We received $1,450 for our share of the Canteen (2007). From the Registration Fees and Canteen income, we paid the T&DJFL $3,300; VCFL $2,545; Trophies (2007) $1,143.25, Presentation Day (2007) and Jumper Presentation Night catering. As part of the 25th Anniversary Year the club purchased 150 Caps, at a cost of $1,567.50. Every registered player received a Cap as part of their Registration Fees. $175 worth of Caps were sold during the season. An Anniversary Dinner was held in July where a Raffle and Jumper Auction was conducted. From the entire function the club generated $1,587.50 profit. For the first time the Club sold Warm Up Jackets. In all, 45 jackets were sold, generating a small profit of $168.50. The Club purchased 11 jackets for the Coaching Staff and the Secretary at a cost of $302.50. We received $1,350 in financial support from our generous Sponsors. Our major sponsors were Traralgon West Cricket Club, Cavalier Homes and Karl’s Mega Sports. A Jumper Grant of $960.00 was obtained and was used to purchase 20 new jumpers. A major upgrade of equipment was done at the start of the season, with the Club spending $1,632.66 ($1,332.66 Club funds plus $300 donation from Karl’s Mega Sports). We purchased 11 Warm Up Jackets for Coaching Staff and the Secretary, 24 drink bottles, 2 water bottle crates, 2 water cans, 2 whiteboards, 2 leather footballs, 16 training footballs, 3 airhorns and refills, 10 training cones, a timer, 4 fluro vests and updated all first aid kits. A Bus Trip was run to the Hawthorn vs. Richmond game at the MCG in August, where we were fortunate enough to receive free tickets from the AFL & Richmond F.C. Frank McEntee organised a bus at an excellent rate. During the season the Club won $1,000 worth of Sports equipment from Telstra and 90 Meat Pies from Patties and Gold1242. E-Footy RECORD 17th May 2008 Issue 7 Editorial with Marty King AN HISTORIC AND BUSY TIME FOR EVERYONE IN QUEENSLAND FOOTBALL To say it has been a busy couple of weeks at AFL Queensland would be a massive understate- ment. It’s been quite extraordinary, and quite historic. First, I want to congratulate Tom McArthur on becoming the fi rst Queenslander inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. Chosen in 2003 as the Umpire in the AFL Queensland Team of the Century, Tom did his State proud when he joined the likes of Kevin Sheedy and Alex Jesaulenko in the AFL spotlight in Melbourne last Thursday week. He spoke with great passion and love for Queensland football, and was a wonderful ambassador for our game. Second, I want to congratulate everyone involved with Community Football last weekend. It was a massive logistical exercise and yet it went off with barely a hitch, and was wonderfully well received by people at all levels of football. It was fantastic to see Queensland AFL players Courtenay Dempsey, Luke McGuane, Ricky Petterd and Ben Hudson fl y from Melbourne to Queensland to join the festivities, and the support we received from the entire Brisbane Lions playing list was fi rst-class. Thirdly, thanks to all who supported another successful Ladies Love AFL Lunch last Friday week at Royal on the Park. A great day was had by all. Special thanks to Lions players Simon Black, Daniel Merrett and Scott Clouston, VIP guests Sam Lukis, Melissa Lambert and Margo Bowers, and Channel 10 hosts Bill McDonald and Georgie Lewis.

  • Thesis Amended to Examiners Comments
Organizational Culture and Identity: A Case Study from the Australian Football League Gervase A. Haimes A thesis submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy VICTORIA UNIVERISTY School of Human Movement, Recreation and Performance Faculty of Arts, Education and Human Development August 2006 ABSTRACT This thesis comprises research that was undertaken between January 2000 and December 2004 into the organizational culture and identity of Fremantle Football Club, a professional sporting organization that competes in an elite national football competition, the Australian Football League. The thesis began with a review of the contemporary literature on the principal topic, organizational culture and identity. The literature was subsequently used to frame and explain the approach taken in the research, which was to explore culture and identity as distinguishable, inter-dependent concepts integral to the functioning of sports organizations. The justification for the need to explore their impact in professional sporting organizations, because of a gap in our knowledge, was also provided. The research was conducted as a single qualitative case study that enabled an in-depth investigation into how Fremantle Football Club’s culture and identity were formed and how they influenced its structure, strategy, behaviour and performance. Significantly, the research covered the entire history of the club since its inception in 1994, revealing three distinct periods in which culture and identity were strongly influenced by the values and beliefs of the club’s leaders, particularly the CEOs, as well as board members, senior management and coaches. The first period comprised a time of self-absorption with an inappropriate culture that saw it in frequent conflict with external stakeholders as on-field success eluded it.

  • Corporate Sponsorship Opportunities
CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES ‘EXPOSING YOUR BUSINESS TO NEW LEVELS’ We pride ourselves on achieving excellence in every aspect of our Club both in our football programs and our social responsibilities. The days of only having to pick players out of local football and present them to the AFL recruiters are long gone. The charter and responsibility of the Dandenong Southern Stingrays now encompasses drug and alcohol awareness, learner driver education, racism in society and sport, time management skills, diet and nutrition programs, social and domestic violence programs and a wellbeing program. These social programs filter down from our TAC Cup Under 18 male and female teams, through our staff into all of our underage programs. Every person works within the club expecting excellence from our players and with them taking these standards back with them into local football communities. This creates exciting opportunities for your business to become part of our Club; to help expand our Club and its programs to new levels and help our Club to continue to grow so we can maintain and improve our current status. The Dandenong Southern Stingrays have appeared in 25 finals series in the 27 years with 113 players drafted onto AFL club lists. In 2018 we still have 41 players on an AFL list and second to Geelong Falcons in the most 200 AFL game players. Also in 2018 we have 2 AFL Captain’s in Nathan Jones Melbourne FC and Tom Lynch Gold Coast FC, along with 4 Vice Captains. We also have numerous ex players that are working in coaching or administrative roles within AFL clubs.

  • Draft Systems in Professional Team Sports and the Restraint of Trade Doctrine: Is the Afl Draft Distinguishable from the Nswrl Draft?
80 Australian and New Zealand Sports Law Journal 2006 1(1) DRAFT SYSTEMS IN PROFESSIONAL TEAM SPORTS AND THE RESTRAINT OF TRADE DOCTRINE: IS THE AFL DRAFT DISTINGUISHABLE FROM THE NSWRL DRAFT? Chris Davies* When the New South Wales Rugby League (“NSWRL”) implemented a draft system in 1990 it was successfully challenged by the players in Adamson v NSWRL. This article examines this decision, though it should be noted that the rules of the NSWRL draft are no longer in operation. The Australian Football League (“AFL”), however, has continued to use its draft system and it is argued that the AFL draft rules are much fairer on the players than the rules previously used by the NSWRL. This is because while the AFL draft does initially restrict a player’s choice of employer, this is only true for the first two years. At the end of that period the rules provide players with some genuine bargaining power to help them choose the employer of their choice. It is suggested therefore that the AFL draft is distinguishable from the draft system once used by the NSWRL that was declared invalid by the courts. There are still problems with the AFL draft in that clubs are able to initiate the trade of players without the player’s consent, but it is suggested that this can be solved by the introduction of a consent clause. It is also suggested that the restrictive nature of the draft can be reduced by the introduction of a limited form of free agency for players who have been playing for a certain period of time and/or played a certain number of games.
