CZECH (Under the Direction of John Weaver) ABSTRACT This project opens space for looking at the world in a musical way where “jamming” with music through playing and listening to it helps one resist a more standardized and dualistic way of seeing the world. Instead of having a traditional dissertation, this project is organized like a record album where each chapter is a Track that contains an original song that parallels and plays off the subject matter being discussed to make a more encompassing, multidimensional, holistic, improvisational, and critical statement as the songs and riffs move along together to tell why an arts-based musical way of being can be a choice and alternative in our lives.

  • 2 to Be Somebody: Ambition and the Desire to Be Different
2 To Be Somebody: Ambition and the Desire to Be Different The context for difference This chapter aims to identify some of the bands that enjoyed chart success during the late 1970s and ’80s and identify their artistic traits by means of conversations with band members and those close to the bands. This chapter does not claim to be a definitive account or an inclusive list of innovative bands but merely a viewpoint from some of the individuals who were present at the time and involved in music, creativity and youth culture. Some of these individuals were in the eye of the storm while others were more on the periphery. However, common themes emerge and testify to the Scouse resilience identified in the previous chapter. Also, identifying objective truth is a difficult task, as one band member will often have a view of his band’s history that conflicts with that of other members of the same band. As such, it is acknowledged that this chapter presents only selective viewpoints. Trying something new: In what ways were the Liverpool bands creative and different? ‘Liverpool has always made me brave, choice-wise. It was never a city that criticized anyone for taking a chance.’ David Morrissey1 In terms of creativity, the theory underpinning this book which was stated in Chapter 1 is that successful Liverpool bands in the 1980s were different from each other and did not attempt to follow the latest local or national pop music trends. None of the bands interviewed falls into the categories of punk, disco or New Romantic, which were popular trends at the time.

Interview with Kevin Rankin - A Flock of Seagulls - Portland, Orego... http://www.mirp411.com/a-flock-of-seagulls/ [email protected] HOME INTERVIEWS REVIEWS PHOTOS EVENT CALENDAR NEWS EDITORIALS MIRP RADIO !! " Previous Next # Interview With Kevin Rankin – Drummer for A Flock of Seagulls – Portland, Oregon By Susan Welch | December 9th, 2017 | Written Interviews | Comments O! A Fock of Seagulls are an English new wave and synthpop band originally formed in Liverpool 1980. Everyone knows the song, “I Ran (I Ran So Far Away).” It was a staple in the 80s with heavy rotation on MTV, and brought back to life for the younger generation through video games, movies, and commercials. While “I Ran” is the song that saw the most commercial success for A Flock of Seagulls, they had other hits such as “Space Age Love Song” (1982), “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)” (1982), and “The More You Live, the More You Love” (1984). In 1983, they won a grammy for the Best Rock Instrumental Performance for their song DNA. While they’ve only released #ve studio albums over the span of 35 years, they have never stopped making and playing music. Founder, and the only original member, Mike Score (lead vocals, keyboards, and guitar) has kept this well loved band going, and they show no signs of stopping. I had the privilege of sitting down with Kevin Rankin, the current drummer for A Flock Of Seagulls. If only I had turned the recorder on during our hour long chat prior to the interview…Not only is he a very talented drummer, but he is an incredibly nice guy.

  • Mark Hollis, Leader of ’80S Band Talk Talk, Is Dead
LOG IN Mark Hollis, Leader of ’80s Band Talk Talk, Is Dead Mark Hollis of Talk Talk in 1986. The success of the group’s second album, “It’s My Life,” gave Mr. Hollis and the rest of the band free rein to experiment. Rob Verhorst/Redferns, via Getty Images By Daniel E. Slotnik Feb. 27, 2019 Mark Hollis, the frontman for the British band Talk Talk, which had synth-pop hits in the early 1980s before veering into a more experimental sound that influenced a generation of musicians, has died. Mr. Hollis, about whom personal details are scarce, was widely reported to have been 64. A Facebook page devoted to the group confirmed the death, citing Keith Aspden, Mr. Hollis’s former manager, but provided no further details. Talk Talk was formed in London in 1981, when new wave and synth-pop groups like A Flock of Seagulls and Duran Duran were beginning to receive heavy airplay. Talk Talk’s biggest hits, among them “It’s My Life” and “Such a Shame,” were typical of the style: buoyant songs built on catchy, danceable beats and Mr. Hollis’s plaintive lyrics. The band at first consisted of Mr. Hollis on vocals, guitar and piano, Lee Harris on drums, Paul Webb on bass and Simon Brenner on keyboards. Mr. Brenner left after the group released its first album, “The Party’s Over,” on EMI in 1982, and Tim Friese-Greene became the band’s producer and unofficial fourth member. Talk Talk toured with Duran Duran and broadened its American audience with videos on MTV.
