Ancillary Withdrawal A service whereby patients in mild to moderate or persistent withdrawal receive symptom relief and/or addiction medications after an assessment of the level of withdrawal determined by the use of a standardized assessment instrument. Providers must receive office approved designation to provide this service.

Crisis Services –Medication Management Substance use disorder crisis services provide withdrawal and stabilization services in a short term inpatient program aimed to engage and increase motivation and successfully link the patient to the appropriate ongoing treatment. Medication Management is a face-to-face service with a prescribing professional for one of the following purposes: 1) evaluation, monitoring, observation or dosage change to a patient's medication; 2) a comprehensive medication review of a new patient or any patient who requires a more extensive review; or 3) the induction of a patient to a new medication requiring a period of patient observation.

Drug and Alcohol Outpatient: State certified outpatient substance use disorder treatment services provided in a community-based setting according to an individualized assessment and action plan based on the needs of the person. Services include individual, group, and family counseling. Harm Reduction: Harm Reduction is a practical set of strategies that aims to reduce the harm associated with risky behavior, (unsafe drug use), without (necessarily) eliminating the behavior from the individual’s lifestyle. Outpatient Intensive: State certified outpatient substance use disorder treatment services provided in a community-based setting at an intensity of at least 3 hours per day 3 times per week. Services are provided according to an individualized assessment and action plan based on the needs of the person. Services include individual , group, and family counseling.

Naloxone: Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that can reverse potentially fatal opioid-induced respiratory depression and is used as part of the initial treatment of suspected opioid overdose.

Medication Assisted Treatment: A treatment approach using addiction medications (e.g., Suboxone) administered by a medical professional. Medication assisted treatment should be combined with clinical therapy and may be employed in an inpatient or outpatient setting. Medically Managed Withdrawal: A service conduced in facilities certified by OASAS to provide a chemical dependence crisis services which are certified as an Article 28 issued by the Department of Health. This service addresses the needs of the patients who are acutely ill from alcohol-related and/or substance-related addictions or dependence, including the need for medical management or persons with severe withdrawal or risk of severe withdrawal symptoms, and may include individuals with or at risk of an acute physical or psychiatry comorbid condition. Medically Monitored Withdrawal: Medically monitored withdrawal services can be provided in a free-standing community-based setting or as additional service of a licensed chemical dependence inpatient or residential provider. This service treats clients intoxicated by alcohol and/or substances suffering from mild withdrawal complications, or who are in danger of relapse. These services do not require physician direction or direct supervision by a physician and should provide a safe environment to complete withdrawal and secure referral to the next level of care. medically monitored withdrawal services must provide: assessment; monitoring of symptoms and vital signs; individual and age group counseling; level of care determination, and referral to other appropriate services.

Medically Supervised Withdrawal: This service provides treatment of moderate withdrawal and non acute physical or psychiatric complications associated with chemical dependence. All medically supervised withdrawal services must provide: biopsychosocial assessment; medical supervision of intoxication and withdrawal conditions; pharmacological services; individual and group counseling; level of care determination and referral to other appropriate services. Opioid Opioids are medications that relieve pain. They reduce the intensity of pain signals reaching the brain and affect those brain areas controlling emotion, which diminishes the effects of a painful stimulus. Medications that fall within this class include hydrocodone (e.g., Vicodin), oxycodone (e.g., OxyContin, Percocet), morphine (e.g., Kadian, Avinza), codeine, and related drugs. Outpatient Day Rehab with Alternative School: State certified outpatient substance use disorder treatment services provided in a community-based setting according to an individualized assessment and action plan based on the needs of the person. Some programs specialize in adolescent services and accredited education in an on-site alternative school.

Opioid Detoxification A treatment procedure using approved medications administered in decreasing doses over a limited period of time, for the purpose of detoxification from opioids consistent with a protocol that has been approved by the office's medical director. Opioid Medical Maintenance: A designated office-based opioid treatment program operated by a certified OTP and is limited to patients who meet specific criteria. Opioid Treatment: A treatment program where methadone or other approved medications are administered to treat opioid dependency. This level of care encompasses medical and support services including case management, counseling, educational and vocational rehabilitation. Inpatient: State certified providers of substance use disorder treatment include intensive evaluation and short-term (average stay 28 days) treatment and rehabilitation services in a medically supervised 24 hours/day, 7 days/week setting. Specialized Opioid Service: An approved medical treatment protocol that utilizes an approved pharmacological agent in the treatment of opioid addiction. The protocol must be research oriented and must be provided in an ambulatory or residential environment. Suboxone: Suboxone is a prescription medication that can help treat heroin addiction and dependence on other opiates. Suboxone is a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone.

Substance Use Disorder: Occurs when the recurrent use of alcohol and/or drugs causes clinically and functionally significant impairment, such as health problems, disability, and failure to meet major responsibilities at work, school, or home. According to the DSM-5, a diagnosis of substance use disorder is based on evidence of impaired control, social impairment, risky use, and pharmacological criteria. Residential: State certified residential providers assist individuals with a substance use disorder who are unable to maintain abstinence or participate in treatment without the structure of a 24- hour/day, 7 day/week residential setting, and who are not in need of acute hospital or psychiatric care. Syringe Exchange Program: Provide free or low-cost sterile syringes and collect used syringes for the purpose of reducing blood borne pathogens such as HIV, Hepatitis B virus and Hepatitis C virus (HCV).

Community Residence: Designed for individuals with a chemical dependence and provides supervised services while they are making the transition to abstinent living. This program is for individuals who are completing, or have completed a course of treatment but are not yet ready for independent living, due to outstanding clinical issues or other unmet needs.
