Student Of The Month Congratulations to the physical education students of the month at Hughes Elementary. These students have worked very hard to achieve this accomplishment. To receive this award, students must try their best in PE class, follow directions, always come to class prepared with athletic sneakers, demonstrate good sportsmanship, and follow safety procedures. Students must also perform the fitness stations with good form. These activities include biceps curls, squats, triceps extensions, various stretching, agility, and core exercises. A Note From Ms. Cianfrocco School Social Worker

The E. R. Hughes Elementary Banana Splits groups started in November.

Q. What is Banana Splits?

A. It is a program for children whose families are coping with the stress of a significant change, such as separation (for any reason, including employment, deployment, incarceration), divorce, adoption, or an illness or death of a loved one.

Q. Why should my child attend?

A. The program is considered a peer support group in which children realize that they are not alone in their feelings or concerns. This is accomplished through activities and discussions.

Q. When do students meet?

A. Banana Splits meets by grade level, 2 times per month during lunch. Students can decide for themselves if they would like to attend once they join. Students can join at any time during the year. Parents must sign a permission slip.

Did you know?

Banana Splits was developed in the 1070’s by a School Social Worker, Elizabeth McGonagle who worked in the Balston Spa School District.

Bully Blockers Monthly Tip:

Q. What is Dignity for All Students Act?

A. The Dignity Act was established with the intent to provide a school Environment free of discrimination and harassment.

“HARASSMENT” MEANS THE CREATION OF A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT BY CONDUCT OR VERBAL THREATS, INTIMIDATION OR ABUSE THAT HAS OR WOULD EFFECT A STUDENTS EDUCATIONAL PERFORMANCE, OPPORTUNITIES, EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL OR MENTAL WELL-BEING. IT MAY ALSO CAUSE A STUDENT TO FEAR FOR HIS/HER SAFETY.

Watch here each month for more bully prevention tips.

4 December 2014 9 Holiday Stress and Anxiety in Children: How Parents Can Help Set a calm example: Try to keep things relaxed as much as possible.

Set up conditions for good behavior: Avoid taking your child to places such as the mall or holiday gatherings when he or she might be hungry or tired.

Remember the importance of routines: If your schedule is different than what your child is used to, this can add to their stress. Get back to a routine as quickly as possible.

Watch what your child is eating: Extra sugar without regular meals can add to stress and anxiety. Offer healthy snacks and minimize sweets in the home.

Get your child moving: Exercise can boost your mood and lessen anxiety and stress.

Avoid over-scheduling: Too many parties or activities can be overwhelming.

The Toys for Tots drive will run from December 1 to December 12. We will again be collecting toys for the program which will stay in this area and go to families in need of help this holiday season. Toys must be new and unwrapped when donated. 1,964 toys have been collected in the seven years we have had the toy drive here at E. R. Hughes Elementary School. Last year, we collected 358 toys for families in need! Will you help us beat last years total?

Library Corner DELTA Reading students, grade 4, show off their biography skills with the Paper Bag Project. Using the “Who Was” series, each student chose their own person of interest to read about. After they had become experts on this famous person, they filled a paper bag with props that represented this person’s life and personality. Things like crazy mismatched socks for Albert Einstein, a lock for Harry Houdini, a railroad track for Harriet Tubman, and a horse and scroll for Paul Revere helped the students to relate to their biography subject on a more personal level. I can’t wait to see what they come up with next!

Nurse’s Notes

KEEPING YOUR FAMILY HEALTHY THROUGHOUT THE HOLIDAYS AND ALWAYS. Don’t let then ice weather fool you--bug borne illness can occur any time of the year. Follow these basic steps to help keep your family healthy through the year:

Teach children to wash their hands at these key times: after going to the bathroom, petting an animal, playing outside and before eating.

Do hand washing right: With soap and water, it takes 20 seconds of scrubbing to kill the germs that need to be killed.

Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer with you for visits to playgrounds, mall food courts, and other places where there might not be a sink handy. Be sure to cover every part of the hand, including under the nails, if possible.

After preparing meat or poultry, wash cutting boards with hot, soapy water and spray counter tops with disinfectant. The bacteria commonly found on raw meats, including campylobacter, salmonella and E. coli--are more dangerous than any other germs you’’re likely to have in the house.

Wash small cuts and scrapes with soap and water. Apply an antibacterial ointment, put on a bandage, and change the bandage every day until the wound heals.

Make sure your children are up to date on their vaccinations, and consider getting them a flu shot. A school age child who’s been vaccinated against the flu is less likely to bring home a bug that can infect the entire family.

If someone in your house is sick, take a moment to clean doorknobs, television remotes toys and other items your children touch throughout the day. www.flu.gov is a good resource to keep yourself updated through the flu season.

Winter is almost upon us!

Please be sure your children are dressed appropriately (ie:warm layers, hats, gloves or mittens, boots ETC.) We continue to enjoy a few minutes of fresh air after lunch and your child will enjoy that time much more if dressed appropriately. You lose a lot of heat through your head and neck. Wear a hat and you’ll put a lid on the heat your body needs.
