Press Release
X GAMES 2014 EXECUTIVE BIOS SCOTT GUGLIELMINO SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, PROGRAMMING & X GAMES Scott Guglielmino was promoted to senior vice president, programming and X Games events in June 2010. In his role, Guglielmino is responsible for all aspects of the X Games franchise as well as the management of the soccer category for ESPN in the U.S., including the much-heralded 2010 FIFA World Cup. Most recently, Guglielmino added the NFL, Tennis and Golf categories under his scope and also oversees the Digital Programming team. Prior to his current role, Guglielmino served as vice president, programming & acquisitions at ESPN, overseeing all motorsports (NASCAR, NHRA, IndyCar), NBA, Soccer (FIFA, UEFA, USSF, MLS), Olympic Sports and Lacrosse properties, a position he had held since 2004. Guglielmino directed the return of NASCAR to ESPN and ABC in 2007 across ESPN's multimedia assets, including television, internet, radio, print, broadband and wireless. He also played a key role in ESPN's acquisition of the Monday Night Football franchise and coordinated the company's negotiation preparation for both ESPN and ABC Sports. Guglielmino has also overseen brand extension efforts for ESPN's X Games, which have enabled ESPN to establish the leading global action sports brand. Since 1998, Guglielmino has played a significant role in ESPN's soccer coverage. He was a major contributor in the decision to televise the highly-successful FIFA Women's World Cup in 1999 and managed all network plans for the 2010 Men's FIFA World Cup. Guglielmino originally started at ESPN as a freelance statistics coordinator in 1993. -

A Retrospective Analysis of Vertical Mergers in Multichannel Video Programming Distribution Markets: the Comcast-NBCU Merger
PHOENIX CENTER FOR ADVANCED LEGAL & ECONOMIC PUBLIC POLICY STUDIES 5335 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, Suite 440 Washington, D.C. 20015 Tel: (+1) (202) 274-0235 • Fax: (+1) (202) 318-4909 www.phoenix-center.org Lawrence J. Spiwak, President 16 March 2018 VIA EMAIL Douglas Rathbun Competition Policy and Advocacy Section Antitrust Division U.S. Department of Justice 950 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Room 3413 Washington, DC 20530 RE: USDOJ Roundtable on Antitrust Consent Decrees Dear Mr. Rathbun: The Department announced that it intends to hold a public roundtable on April 26, 2018 which will focus on antitrust consent decrees, including the regulatory nature of consent decrees that involve behavioral remedies. To help inform the discussion, please find attached a copy of a recent Phoenix Center paper entitled A Retrospective Analysis of Vertical Mergers in Multichannel Video Programming Distribution Markets: The Comcast-NBCU Merger. In this paper, Phoenix Center Chief Economist Dr. George S. Ford presents a retrospective analysis of the price effects of the Comcast-NBCU merger. In particular, Dr. Ford conducts an econometric analysis of data on the prices paid for programming by multichannel video programing distributors (“MVPDs”) before and after the transaction and finds no evidence that Comcast’s programming prices rose after the merger. The analysis covers general interest programming, news channels, and national and regional sports networks. Given these results, Dr. Ford concludes that there is either a lack of a net positive effect on incentives to raise programming prices above competitive levels following the vertical merger or that the behavioral remedies placed on the Comcast-NBCU merger were effective. -

L= 5:4 0. case ESPN (Entertainment and Sports Programming Network) is a multimedia, global cable television network with headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut. Founded in 1979 with financing provided by The Getty Oil Company, ESPN grew along with the cable television industry to become a mainstay of American popular culture. After a series of investments by Hearst Publications, and ABC (the American Broadcasting Network), 80% of ESPN finally ended up in the hands of entertainment giant The Walt Disney Company, and 20% with the Hearst Corporation, a 100 year-old media company based largely on newspaper and magazine businesses. ESPN focuses on sports programming including live and pre-taped event telecasts, sports talk shows, and other original programming. While originally a cable media company, ESPN has since expanded aggressively to the Internet as well as radio and print magazines. continued CHAPTER 3 CASE 1 ESPN GOES TO EXTREME SCALE 2 ESPN is actually a family of sports networks and individual shows.
