AN Animal
Animal photography focuses on animals and their behavior. Whether wildlife, domestic, or family pets, it requires an understanding of the animal, so the photographer may anticipate interesting situations to be captured in the photography. Animals are frequently photographed in action in their natural habitats. AR Architecture
Architectural photography is the photographing of buildings and similar structures that are both aesthetically pleasing and representative of their subjects. Architectural photographers are usually skilled in the use of specialized techniques and equipment.
CA Conceptual/Abstract
Conceptual or Abstract photography, sometimes called non-objective, is a means of depicting a visual image that does not have an immediate association with the object world and that has been created through the use of photographic equipment, processes or materials. An abstract photograph may isolate a fragment of a natural scene in order to remove its inherent context from the viewer. BW Black & White/Monochrome
Black and White photography is in a range of shades of gray. Monochrome images are in a range of shades from only one color, for example sepia, cyan, rose, or brown. FL Floral
Floral photography is focused on flowers. The focal point of these photographs tends to be simple and to the point, without distractions or competing elements in the photo. Focus is particularly important in any type of photography but is especially so when photographing flowers. LS Land/Sea/Cityscapes
Landscape photography shows spaces within the world, sometimes vast and unending, but other times microscopic. Landscape photographs typically capture the presence of nature but can also focus on man-made features or disturbances of landscapes. A seascape is a photograph that depicts the sea, or an example of marine art. The word has also come to mean a view of the sea itself, and when applied in geographical context, refers to locations possessing a good view of the sea. A cityscape is a city viewed as a scene; an artistic representation of a city; an urban environment. A cityscape (urban landscape) is a photograph of the physical aspects of a city or urban area. It is the urban equivalent of a landscape. Townscape is roughly synonymous with cityscape, and it implies the same difference in size and density implicit in the difference between the two words - city and town.

MA Macro
Macro Photography is extreme close-up photography of an exceedingly small subject (such as the rim of a dime or the face of a bug) in which the size of the subject in the photograph is greater than life size. It refers to the finished photograph of a subject at greater than life size. PA Photographic Art
Photographic Art always originates with an image created by a camera or scanner. This image must then be altered in some way, digitally (applying filters, digitally painting, digital manipulation, etc.) and/or manually (e.g. painting, dyeing, drawing).
The manipulation involves transforming or altering the original image using various methods and techniques to achieve desired results. The resultant completed Photographic Art piece may be on any two-dimensional media, e.g. photographic paper, metalized paper, metal, or glass. Entries may be realistic or abstract, BUT they must have been altered from the original image in an artistic way.
For wall hung shows, entries in the Photographic Art category must include a small, printed copy of the original source image. This image must be attached to the rear of the entry alongside FCAL’s identification label. Providing this source image gives the judge and viewers an appreciation for the artistic vision and skills applied to create the final piece. PO Portrait
Portrait photography or portraiture in photography is a photograph of a person or group of people that captures the personality of the subject by using effective lighting, backdrops, and poses. A portrait picture might be artistic, or it might be clinical, as part of a medical study.
The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the photographer, to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer. SL Still Life
Still life photography is the depiction of inanimate subject matter, most typically a small grouping of objects. Still life photography, more so than other types of photography, such as landscape or portraiture, gives the photographer more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition. Still life photography is a demanding art, one in which the photographers are expected to be able to form their work with a refined sense of lighting, coupled with compositional skills. The still life photographer makes pictures rather than takes them.

SP Sports
Sports photography refers to the genre of photography that covers all types of sports. Professional sports photography is a branch of photojournalism, while amateur sports photography, such as photos of children playing association football, is vernacular, or everyday life photography which may include photographs of family and friend’s sports activities. Street scenes or street photography, also sometimes called candid photography, is photography conducted for art or enquiry that features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places. Although there is a difference between street and candid photography, it is usually subtle with most street photography being candid in nature but not all candid photography being classifiable as street photography. Street photography does not necessitate the presence of a street or even the urban environment. Street photography could focus on people and their behavior in public. But it could also be of an object or environment where the image projects some decidedly human characteristics.
Photojournalism is a form of journalism (the collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast) that employs images to tell a news story. Photojournalism is distinguished from other close branches of photography (e.g., documentary photography, celebrity photography) by complying with a rigid ethical framework which demands that the work be both honest and impartial while telling a story. Other is comprised of genres that do not fit into the categories listed above. A couple of examples listed below:
Aviation photography including Aerial photography which is the taking of photographs from an aircraft or other flying object. Platforms for aerial photography include fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or "drones"), balloons, blimps and dirigibles, rockets, pigeons, kites, parachutes, stand-alone telescoping and vehicle-mounted poles.
Mixed Media is photography in which more than one medium has been employed. Mixed media, a visual art, is distinguished using additional mediums that add a 3D or textured effect to the photograph.
