Suggestion by Chuck Steinmetz to have a promo produced for member stations to use to promote the new and improved website once it is up and running. Discussion by Chair Maytag to approve funding for the Foundation at the same level as the past few years. Unanimously approved. OLD BUSINESS: • Diversity Module Update: There have been several meetings. Vanessa Younger and Lupita Montoto talked about new opportunities to work on diversity issues in broadcasting. Vanessa mentioned that a scholarship from the IL broadcaster’s association helped her get her start in the business, and that this is a great initiative. We want to address how we get the word out in schools about careers in broadcasting. Some ideas: Create a team of people who can speak in schools across the state; Identify key people and key organizations who we could partner with (UW?); Use PSA’s to promote diversity in broadcasting; Create a brochure about WBA that could be used; Use part of the website for this initiative as well; How can we get young people into the stations for a direct experience; Internships with WBA stations?; and Dedicate at least one of our WBA scholarships to a person of color. NEW BUSINESS: • Sprint/Emmis Radio Smartphone Initiative: Dick Zaragoza reported that the issue is critical to Radio’s future. He feels that there shouldn’t be any issues with anti-trust concerns. Dick suggested that the Association should talk with members, alerting them to the initiative. WBA could decide to send information to members about an upcoming webinar on May 13th on the issue. A motion was made and seconded to provide the information needed to our members so that they can make their own informed decisions as to how to proceed. Approved unanimously. • Long Range Plan: The original 5 year priority plan has been updated and shared with board members. OTHER BUSINESS: Congratulations to Steve Wexler for being elected to the NAB TV Board! The meeting was held from 11:35 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. and was attended by 14 board members (along with Michelle Vetterkind & Linda Baun from the WBA) with 7 excused absences. A quorum was present. June 2013 11 Wisconsin Broadcasters

By Michelle Vetterkind, Five Named To WBA Foundation President & CEO he Wisconsin Broadcasters Hall of Fame was Tcreated in 1989 to honor those broadcasters who have devoted their careers to broadcasting and its development in Wisconsin, to recognize their outstanding service to broadcasting, their communities, and their state, over at least a fifteen-year career in the industry, at least ten of which were served in Wisconsin. The first twelve members of the Hall of Fame were inducted during the 1989 WBA Summer Con- ference. Since 1989, 117 outstanding broadcasters have been honored with Hall of Fame inductions (see listing on page 14). Inductees are chosen each year from among nominations by WBA members. Broadcasters who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame include managers, personalities, engineers, reporters and those broadcasting pioneers who were at once all of the above. The 2013 inductees will be: Dave Carlson, William T. Evjue, Karl Schmidt, Scott M. Trentadue, and Bill Vancil. In October, 1989, Alfred C. Sykes, then Chairman of the Federal Communications Com- mission, came to Wisconsin to formally dedicate a Hall of Fame display, including plaques honoring the inductees, at the State Historical Society of Dave Carlson William T. Congratulations To All Of The 2012 Wba Awards For Excellence Winners!

June 2013 25 Awards Committee Column By: Lindsay Wood Davis, Broadcast Management Strategies very year the WBA Awards committee gathers soon after the WBA EAwards Gala to review the results of the entire Awards program: Entries, Gala, categories, changes that were made the previous year, and ideas for the coming year are all included. If you’re keeping score, you know that the WBA Awards program is by far the largest such program in the nation, so “keeping it inside the lines” is no minor task! Wisconsin One of the ideas that came out of this year’s “follow up” meeting Broadcasters was a regular monthly column in the WBA newsletter, so that the Association entire membership can be kept abreast of the latest changes as soon as possible. The program now involves so many different individuals in the entire Wisconsin broadcast community, that the committee wants to use every avenue available to let you know what’s happening. This is the first of those articles. Thanks to Michelle and her staff for giving us this opportunity. Taken as a whole, a review of the numbers shows that our Awards program continues to grow: 1355 total entries (!) and 350 attendees at the Gala; those are BIG numbers, folks! A breakdown by category shows that TV and New Media entries were flat to slightly up, while News and Talk Radio What showed very good growth. The biggest growth came in Music Radio, up 37% over the previous year. The committee studied a much more detailed analysis of entry totals and learned that there is still room for controlled growth, which are two of our current goals: continued growth while controlling the size of both the contest and the Gala. When the WBA Awards program was reinvented, one of the promises made to the Board was that the program wouldn’t be allowed to become stale and, like our industry, would constantly happened in evolve. Sometimes those changes are in the details, such as changing a word or two in a category description. Other times we discuss adding, modifying or eliminating entire categories. We agreed to take all of those steps in the coming year and to explore others: We discussed how to more effectively incorporate Spanish language (and perhaps other lan- guages) into the WBA Awards program. We revisited how news and sports are treated in Music Radio, with a particular focus on the 2013 at your evolving needs of small market stations. As a result, the committee changed the current category of “Best Info Block” to “Best Newscast” and added a “Best Sports Coverage” category, which could include play-by-play submissions. “Best Artist Interview” now becomes simply, “Best Interview.” We reworded the Public Service Announcement sections of all our divisions. We decided not to have an “Annual Special Awards Category” in any division for the coming station that year. This falls directly into the original idea for this category, which was always intended to be optional at the discretion of the committee. ºRadio News and Talk will once again have separate awards for Best Radio Show 5 AM – 9 AM and 9 AM – 5 AM.
