Good afternoon and welcome to all players, management, officials and supporters of Longlevens FC, hope you enjoy your visit to Kayte Lane.

Well after the highs of Tuesday we experienced some lows Saturday as that was possibly one of the worst performances I’ve seen from my side in a long time! Thankfully 48 hrs later we get the chance to go again.

Derby day against Longlevens and we know how tough today will be - they’ve a forward who’s scored 6-6 and they are coming of the back of a 1-0 in the FA Cup. We need to get back to basics and being the team we can be and not playing as individuals.

We welcome back Matt Wieczorek between the sticks and Mikey Davis who missed the game Saturday through injury could be fit.

Fred Ward is still on holiday and Sam Gilder is also away.

Simple fact the money would have been massive for the club but we were never going to win the FA Cup! So having a bad day in that will be ok providing we get 3pts today.

Thanks again for your support

Enjoy the Game

BISHOPS CLEEVE FOOTBALL CLUB BRIEF HISTORY

Founded 1905 County Members Gloucestershire Football Association Southern League History 2006 – present day Hellenic League History 1983 – 2006 Principal honours 2011/12 & 2015/16 Glos. Senior Challenge Trophy Runners-Up =====

In their long history Bishops Cleeve have led a much more nomadic existence than many clubs, but have now been settled in the impressive Kayte Lane ground since 1997. For many years the club played on a ground in Stoke Road – with facilities rebuilt and reopened in 1971 by the then secretary of the Football Association, Ted Croker. The enforced move to Kayte Lane came about due to the old ground being sold by the landlord. The club enjoyed a brief period of success in the late 60s – gaining promotion from the Cheltenham League and winning four Championships in their six seasons in the Glos. Northern Senior League. After dropping back to the Cheltenham League, Cleeve gained promotion into the Hellenic League in 1983, quickly becoming a force in that division, finishing fourth in their first two seasons in Div. One. This great start was followed up with a third place finish, then winning the Championship and gaining promotion to the Premier Division at the fourth attempt, and winning the ‘double’ by adding the Glos. Amateur Cup. A fantastic achievement. The five seasons in the Premier Division proved to be a struggle for the Club, although the team followed up their Cup success by adding another trophy to their collection, winning the Premier Cup at the first attempt. The return to Division One proved the catalyst for a period of rebuilding, on and off the pitch. The Club needed to enter into a number of ground share agreements to preserve their League status – Forest Green Rovers, Moreton Town, Wollen Sports and Highworth all allowed us to use their grounds. This difficult period galvanised our club members, and the club was kept running by the dedicated efforts of a few stalwarts – notably Cheltenham Town legend, Dave Lewis, whose efforts were recognised by Carling Brewery, awarding him their ‘Clubman of the Year’ accolade (and a year’s supply of beer!) After approval for the Kayte Lane site was given in 1997, club members started the building of the clubhouse and changing rooms – using materials kindly donated by Smiths Aerospace (now GE Aviation) There followed a great transformation in the team’s fortunes, and they duly secured another promotion in 2001 back to the Hellenic Premier Division. In order to take this opportunity the club entered into another ground share at Evesham United! 2003 & 2004 proved to be a landmark period for the club – returning to ‘The Lane’ after the new Stand and floodlights were approved, achieving FA Charter Standard for Football in the Community, and the completion of the building and facilities. In 2006 the team gained promotion to the Sothern League, joining the Midland Division before being moved to the South & West Division a few seasons later, where the club currently reside. The club has enjoyed mixed fortunes in their Southern League time, generally enjoying mid-table security, with the highlight being season 2011/12 when the club finished with their best ever points haul (in a creditable 11th) and reached the Gloucestershire Senior Cup final, played at Bristol City’s Ashton Gate ground, where we unfortunately succumbed to a Bristol City side featuring two Full Welsh Internationals!

With the departure of Alex Sykes to County rivals Shortwood United, the ex-Cheltenham Town professional John Brough took the helm but left towards the end of the season to join Cinderford Town. 2013/14 saw local lad Stephen Cleal take charge with Derek Lightstone, as his assistant, both had a long history with the club and they forged a close link with our Second and Third teams – as well a community tie to Bishops Cleeve Colts Youth section – the future of the club seemed much more secure on and off the field of play. After surviving relegation in their first season they put together a competitive team finishing 12th in the league and losing 1-0 to Forest Green Rovers in the County FA Senior Cup. 2016/17 saw another first for Steve winning the club’s first FA Trophy game. 2017/18 saw the arrival of Matt Jeynes to the management team another who had played for the club in recent years and they later joined by Alex Lumsden Unfortunately a number of players left the club and the season didn’t get off to a good start. The team did rally towards the latter part of the Season but were relegated after losing the last game. So after 12 years the club looked for a speedy return to Step 4 of the NLS. However, having retained most the players, the team had a few slip ups on the run in to the end of the season and finished, they also were runners-up in the County Trophy

Mitres extend winning run in style

A Jack Watts’ hat trick helped Bishop’s Cleeve to their fourth win in a row in all competitions.

Cleeve made a blistering start and saw claims for a penalty turned down in favour of a free kick in the opening minute.

It didn’t take long for the hosts to take the lead though when in the fourth minute Liam Wright picked out the returning Elliott Kennedy with a long pass and Kennedy managed to finish from a tight angle after rounding the ‘keeper.

The visitors nearly equalised when Nick Stanley shot forced a fine save from Sam Gilder who came out of retirement to produce a good display in goal.

Cleeve then doubled their lead, again a pinpoint long pass, this time from Tristan Haswell, was perfect for Wright to head over the onrushing keeper first time.

It then looked like the three points were secured with less than half an hour gone when Watts got his first thanks in part to a defensive error. The Shrivenham ‘keeper attempted a quick clearance however the ball kept low and ricocheted off a defender into the path of Lee Llewellyn who picked Watts out.

However this started a spell of fifteen minutes when the visitors were on top and on the half hour mark, some poor play at the back allowed Shrivenham possession and Josh Morse capitalised firing in a low shot off the post from 25yds out.

The visitors then had chances from a couple of corners and Tom Ballard had a couple of chances to reduce the deficit however Cleeve held firm and managed to restore their three goal advantage just before half time.

From defending a Shrivenham corner Cleeve won possession and eventual Mitre of the Match Llewellyn picked out Watts with a pinpoint long pass and Watts made no mistake from the one on one situation with the goalkeeper to make it 4-1 at half time although Stanley and Antonio Gerrish did their best to reduce the deficit again for the visitors.

Cleeve started the second half brightly and the introduction of Lucas Price early on in the half showed that the signing on duel registration from Evesham looks an exciting player as he constantly beat the Shrivenham defence.

Sam Ockwell nearly reduced the deficit for the visitors when his dipping shot from 30yds only just went over the bar and when Stanley was through it looked liked he would score but he dragged his shot just wide.

Cleeve then added a fifth when Watts played in Ryan New who playing up front rather than his usual defending role, lashed the ball home from the edge of the box to score his first goal for the club.

The rout was completed just before full time when Watts was fouled inside the penalty area and it was Watts who brushed himself down and converted the penalty to complete his hat trick and send Cleeve to fourth in the table.

After the match Cleeve manager Steve Cleal said “We’re a team that looks to play on the front foot, play positive and get goals.

“We started really well going two nil up very quickly and then they put us under a lot of pressure with set pieces and caused us a few problems and we had to stand strong but we always looked strong on the break.”

By Hugo Varley @ The Non-League Paper:

Happy Birthday to the National League!

The NLP office was in absolute overdrive last week as we celebrated 40 years of the National League.

It was while producing our special eight-page pull-out that it truly dawned upon us just how many extraordinary tales and history this division has created; so much so that we ended up writing far too much and spent most of Friday evening frantically trying to cut down word counts and squeeze in as many stories as we possible could!

There were interviews with the likes of Martin O’Neil and Neil Warnock, who both learned their trade in Non-League’s highest tier, however for me, I particularly enjoyed speaking to Peter Hunter, who was secretary of the division when the one up, one down agreement was made with the Football League.

It was during this conversation that I realised just how important the agreement made in 1987 was for both advancing the quality of the division and streamlining the entire Non-League pyramid.

Before then clubs had to apply for a place in the Football League, with just one position up for grabs.

At the time it seems as though this application process was a largely futile event for Non-League clubs to be a part of, with the bottom placed Football League club more often than not coming out on top in the lottery.

In many respects there was essentially a permanent divide between the Football League and Non-League – with the fairy tale dream of a team rising through from obscurity to break into the upper echelons of the English system seeming virtually impossible.

It is amazing to see just what an impact the promotion and relegation agreement has had on Non-League football.

Teams can now dare to dream of making a run through the divisions, while the guarantee of Football League clubs making the plunge into Non-League each year has increased both the quality and the fan base within the National League.

Nowadays, especially with the introduction of two up, two down, the division is in extraordinary health and with attendance records being broken and the likes of Tranmere Rovers using promotion from the National League as a springboard for further success, the future of the league is looking bright!

New documentary proves fascinating watching

I would recommend all Non-League fans watch “The Gaffer” on BT Sport this Saturday (24th August) evening.

The documentary follows coaches such as Harrogate’s Simon Weaver, Bromley boss Neil Smith, lower league legend and his protégé Hakan Hayrettin at Maidstone, as well as Ben Strevens and Hartlepool boss Craig Hignett.

It contains some really fascinating moments that demonstrate just what an important role these clubs play within their local community and how the work for a manager most certainly never, ever stops!

Courtesy of WSC It emerged this week that any player or team official who attempts to enter the VAR Room during a match will be sent off. Seems reasonable, particularly as they'd have had plenty of time to calm down on the drive to Stockley Park in west London from whichever Premier League stadium they had stormed out of.

Even then, they might not make it in time – Graham Scott had to settle for being fourth official at Chelsea v Leicester on Sunday after getting stuck in traffic on the M40. It's a better excuse than that offered by whoever was meant to be taking charge of Wattsville v Pilcs in the Gwent County League.

Enough about referees. Fans of Dundee were confused to see a full bed frame on top of the pie kiosk at Dens Park. Presumably it's just the stadium's new hotel suite, with underfloor heating and very reasonably priced room service.

Rangers visited East Fife in the Scottish League Cup on Sunday. Not only did the home side suffer a 3-0 defeat, they also have to splash out on a new ball.
