  • UC Santa Cruz's Pacific Rim Music Festival: a History
UC Santa Cruz’s Pacific Rim Music Festival: A History Leta E. Miller, Professor of Music Emerita, UCSC The high-profile Pacific Rim Music Festival, sponsored by the Music Department of the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) and led by composer and professor Hi Kyung Kim, has taken place six times since 1996. During its twenty-year history, the festival has presented the works of 131 composers, introduced more than a hundred world premieres, brought well-known contemporary performance groups to campus, and promoted the creation of compositions that bridge culturally diverse musical expressions and unite performers and composers from around the world. The Pacific Rim Music Festival arose as an outgrowth and, ultimately, an extension of the UCSC Music Department’s annual salute to new music, called April in Santa Cruz (AISC). Dating back to the mid-1980s and continuing to the present day, AISC typically presents four concerts of contemporary music each spring. Responsibility for organizing its events rotates among the UCSC composition faculty and the concert schedule has often included guest ensembles from around the country. A consistent component of AISC has been the presentation of new works by UCSC faculty members and graduate students. Financing for the concerts has traditionally come from the Music Department, the Arts Division, and various campus granting agencies, such as the Arts Research Institute. The 1996 Festival In 1996, when it was her turn to run the AISC festival, Professor Kim envisioned focusing the annual event around a unified theme. Kim had grown up in Korea and had come to the United States for doctoral study at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) in 1982.

Austin State University, 2002 M.M., University of North Texas, 2004 Project Advisor: Allen Otte Abstract The history of purely American musical traditions—those not influenced by European ideals—has been largely unexplored by composers. One of the few composers to have created a new music in the search for a uniquely American identity is Peter Garland. Unlike the Euro- centric approach of George Gershwin, Aaron Copland, or William Grant Still, Garland attempts to create an American identity in music by utilizing the actual resonances—both physical and psychological—of indigenous cultures. The intent of this document is to shed light on Native American influences in the percussion music of Peter Garland and their realization through the most conscientious and sympathetic of performance practices.

  • John Zorn and the Construction of Jewish Identity Through Music
HARVARD JUDAICA COLLECTION STUDENT RESEARCH PAPERS No.7 Studies in Jewish Musical Traditions Insights from the Harvard Collection of Judaica Sound Recordings Edited by Kay Kaufman Shelemay Professor of Music Harvard University '. HARVARD •COLLEGE LIBRARY Cambridge, Massachusetts 2001 Free Improvisation: John Zorn and the Construction of Jewish Identity through Music Michael Scott Cuthbert In early 1993, the Japanese record company Eva released a new disc of pieces by a composer best known for his work in free jazz, avant-garde "classical" music, and film scoring.! Taking its title from the night of violence against Jewish people, their businesses, and their property which occurred in Nazi Germany on November 9 and 10, 1938, Kristallnacht was John Zorn's first musical exploration of his Jewish heritage. After working with a group of musicians, most of whom he had little or no prior recorded collaboration with, Zorn built on the success of this project by turning in a new direction in his creative life. Quickly founding his own Hebrew-titled record company, encouraging other Jewish musicians to embrace their ethnic and religious heritage, and releasing in quick succession a CD series of Klezmer-flavored tunes, John Zorn's seemingly abrupt decision to visibly take up his cultural identity has gained him not only fans in the Jewish and free jazz worlds, but also critics and accusations of ethnic profiteering. This paper examines the underlying assumptions, aims, and methods for achieving these goals in Zorn's recent Jewish work through statements made by the composer, and reception by his fans and critics, but primarily through his recorded legacy.
