The Talmud's Two Jubilees and Their Relevance to the Date of the Exodus
Westminster Theological Journal 68 (2006): 71-83 The Talmud’s Two Jubilees and Their Relevance to the Date of the Exodus The Babylonian Talmud mentions two, and only two, occasions for the observance of a Jubilee. The question of whether there actually were Jubilees at the times specified, or whether these passages reflect a later projection of ideas back into a previous age, is a matter of some importance. It bears on the question of when Leviticus was written, because many scholars date the composition of Leviticus, particularly of the so-called “H” or Holiness Code that established the Jubilee and Sabbatical years (Lev 17–26), to exilic or post-exilic times. An exilic or post-exilic date for the Holiness Code would be difficult to maintain if it could be shown that Sabbatical years or Jubilee years were observed before the exile, since the observation of such rituals in the ancient Near East always presupposes their written codification. One way to evaluate whether the two Jubilees mentioned in the Talmud were genuine historical events is to examine the dates assigned to them. The two passages are in b. ‘Arak. 12a, mentioning a Jubilee in the time of Ezekiel, and in b. Meg. 14b, mentioning a Jubilee in the time of Josiah. The ‘Arakin passage is as follows: “Is it not written: In the five and twentieth year of our captivity, in the beginning of the year, in the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was smitten. Now which is the year the beginning of which falls on the tenth of Tishri? Say: This is the jubilee year.” 1 The argument the Talmud presents here is that the verse quoted (Ezek 40:1) gave the day as both “the beginning of the year” (Rosh HaShanah or New Year’s Day) and also as the tenth of the month. -

Perhaps you will never have leisure Avot 2:4) 1 Welcome to The Learning Circle At the centre of the life of our synagogue here at the LJS lies its educational programme: the LJS Nursery for children aged 2½ - 5 years old, Rimon Religion School from 3½ to 15, and a full programme of learning and engagement for adults. There is nothing more fulfilling and stimulating than reading a text, listening to a piece of music, looking at a painting, engaging in discussion or learning something new. This prospectus provides a gateway to lifelong learning about Judaism and Jewish cultural identity. For the beginner, Exploring Judaism provides a weekly exploration of Jewish life, history, belief and observance with time to reflect on living a Jewish life. Festivals offer times to delve more deeply into their significance and practice. Lunchtime gatherings on Shabbat have proved a popular way for the congregation to come together to listen to first-class speakers. Art, poetry and music feature in our programme as well as discussions about Israel and Jewish identity. We are delighted to be collaborating once again with Spiro Ark with a full programme of Hebrew and Yiddish classes. In addition, on offer for the first time is a programme of classes at Leo Baeck College. We hope that there will be something that will draw you over the threshold and help to deepen Jewish knowledge and wisdom and enhance our spirituality and Jewish identity. -

Five Pillars of Orthodox Judaism or Open Charedism by Rabbi Asher Lopatin You can be a good member, a wonderful, beloved and productive member of Anshe Sholom, and even an effective leader or officer, without holding of all these. But they are the principals which make us an Orthodox shul. I would hope that every member of our community struggle with them, think about them, and perhaps come up with interpretations or responses that work for their own lives. 1)Torah Mi Sinai – Torah shebichtav veTorah sheba’al peh – both the Oral and Written Tradition. The great liberal Orthodox thinker David Hartman openly declares he believes in this – but he then says that he believes in an interpretive tradition which is close to our second pillar. A great Conservative decisor, Rabbi Joel Roth, has said, “the halackic tradition is the given, and theology is required to fall into place behind it.” I believe our halachik tradition needs to be driven by theology in order to keep the tradition alive and infinite, rather than ossified and limited. We need to start with this awe of the Torah and Talmud coming from God and being infinite and deserving infinite reverence, placing ourselves humbly below it, and only then establishing ownership of it, and making it our “plaything” as King David says in Psalms. Only when a couple accepts Kiddushin can they become intimate with each other, and our rabbis compare Matan Torah to Kiddushin. Only if you feel the Torah is your God-given partner can you then become intimate with it, can you really feel you are so connected to it that you can make a conjecture as to what it is thinking, that you trust your instincts in interpreting it and its 3500 year tradition. -

Tübingen: Mohr, 2003. MILLENNIUM, JUBILEE AND HUMAN HISTORY UNDER GOD FOR JEWS IN THE MIDDLE AGES Asher Finkel, Ph.D. The year 1240 is the beginning of the sixth millenium in the Jewish calendar. This year witnessed the Mongol invasion from the East, defeating the Germans and Poles, as well as the year that saw the new ascendancy of the Islamic power. The turn of events was perceived by Nachmanides as the appearance of the "fearsome and terrible beast" in Daniel's vision (Chapter 7) that preceded the coming of the Son of Man, the messianic figure in Jewish apocalypticism. Nachmanides1 portrays the Islamic empire as a "powerful kingdom that is closer to the truth than the former ones," referring to the other theriomorphic empires in Daniel's prophecy. Islam was perceived by Spanish Jewry to be a monotheistic faith, with emphasis on God's unity. Jews faced both Muslims and Christians on the Iberian peninsula, and they were also aware of the distinction between them. -

Levi agrees with him despite that R' Yochanan disagrees, (as we'll see later in the Gemara). As B. Kapara Darshens: what does the Pasuk mean by "the house of Hashem was burned, and so was the king's house, and so too all the houses in Jerusalem and all raising houses was burned in fire?" "The house of Hashem was burned," that refers to the Beis Hamikdash. "And so was the king's house," this is his palace. "And so too all the houses in Jerusalem," this is like its simple meaning. "And all raising houses were burned in fire," the meaning is an argument between R' Yochanan and R' Yehoshua b. Levi. One says that it raises Torah, and the other says that it raises Tefila. The opinion that holds that it's the Torah, as it says "Hashem desires for the sake of his righteousness, the raising of Torah and strengthening it." According to the opinion that it's Tefila, as it says "count now the greatness that Elisha did," which he did through Davening. -
