I “WHAT ARE WE TO DO” (Jn.11.47)

The Chief priests and the Pharisees were afraid of the inroads that Jesus’ teachings and signs had being making in their community. Caiaphas, the high priest of the year suggested the elimination of the ‘idealist Jesus’ for the nation and also to gather the scattered children of God into one (Jn.11.52). Hence the ‘liberator of sins’, who had been in Jerusalem to celebrate the first liberation of the progeny of Jacob from the slavery in Egypt, was humiliated and murdered in the most heinous way of crucifixion. But their plan catapulted. Jesus rose from the dead as he had foretold to ‘build the temple in three days’. Even the Roman centurion, who might have had to been witness of many crucifixions by living in a foreign and subjugated country said, “Truly this man was the son of God” (Mt.27.54). Jesus by declaring the policy of the kingdom of God had said at a previous occasion, “Rejoice and be glad for your reward is great in heaven” (Mt.5.12). An echo of the same could be seen in Paul’s letter to the Colossians, “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, … for the sake of his body, that is, the church” (Col.1.24). Peter and the other disciples too were happy even when they were at the receiving end of the persecutors’ hands for proclaiming the message of resurrection and the lordship of Jesus. They had at first refused to believe the message of resurrection from the angels and Mary Magdalene (Lk.24.11, 25-26, 41; Jn.20.24-25). But at the sight of the risen Lord fear gives way to bold witnessing. They set out to gather the scattered children of God, once they got the Spirit of Christ. It is possible to the Vincentians too as we are proving in our Missions. The process is simple for the committed people as St. Paul has put it: “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from

3 Family Bond - March 2015

the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit which dwells in you” (Rom.8.11). Jesus was with the disciples for forty days after his resurrection lifting them from their depression and also showering his love and care and unfolding the secrets of the long hidden divine plan. Saul’s confrontation with Jesus on the way to Damascus converted him to be an ardent admirer of Jesus. In short only the personal experience had emboldened them to preach ‘Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God’ (1Cor.1. 23-24). In the course of time our little Congregation has grown and discovered ‘What are we to do’? It is to help everybody to realize the ‘image of God’ (Gen.1.26) in the selves and in others. It is that perfect image of the incarnated God, the resurrected Jesus, very often invisible, still had been recognized by Mary Magdalene and the disciples. Peter and Paul and other disciples boldly narrated the story of Jesus as the Son of God and asked the audience to repent and be converted towards: “ Be perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect” (Mt.5.47) - to be filled with love of God and of neighbour. No hindrance could stop them as we read, “… Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? … No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Rom.8.35-37). We shall ask the Lord only that we shall be able to carry the message of the Risen Jesus in compliance with Mt. 28.19 –20. Let us tell the people with St. Paul, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say rejoice” (Phi.4.4). By the lovely deed of anointing Mary won the appreciation of Jesus (Jn.12.3-7). By the stealthy deed for personal gain Judas Iscariot distanced himself from Jesus and the joy and peace he had enjoyed in the previous three years! May I wish you all the dear confreres the peace and joy of the Glorious Easter and greater success in our ministry at His Service! Fr. Varghese Chackumkuzhy VC Editor

St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) wrote: “The passion of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is the hope of glory and a lesson in patience... He loved us so much that, sinless himself, he suffered for us sinners the punishment we deserved for our sins. How then can he fail to give us the reward we deserve for our righteousness, for he is the source of righteousness? How can he, whose promises are true, fail to reward the saints when he bore the punishment of sinners, though without sin himself? Brethren, let us then fearlessly acknowledge, and even openly proclaim, that Christ was crucified for us; let us confess it, not in fear but in joy, not in shame but in glory.”

Saint Peter Chrysologus: Sermon on the Mystery of the Incarnation, 148; PL 52, 596 The hand that deigned to take hold of clay (Gn 2,7), in order to create us, deigned also to take hold of our flesh to recreate us… O man, why do you despise yourself so, seeing that you are so precious to God? Why, when God thus shows you honor, do you dishonor yourself so much? Why try to discover how you were made but not the purpose for which you were made? Isn’t it true that the whole visible dwelling- place of this earth has been made for you?…

“Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion.” Be filled with joy, Church of God. “See, your king shall come to you.” (Zech 9:9) Go out to meet him, hasten to contemplate his glory. This is the world’s salvation: God comes to the cross, and the Desired of the nations (Hag 2:7) enters Zion. The Lord God appeared as the resurrection of those who have fallen, the liberation of captives, the light of the blind, the consolation of the afflicted, rest for the weak, spring for those who thirst, avenger of the persecuted, redemption of those who are lost, union of the divided, doctor for the sick, salvation of those who have gone astray. Yesterday, Christ raised Lazarus from the dead; today he is going to his own death. Yesterday, he tore off the strips of cloth that bound Lazarus; today he is stretching out his hand to those who want to bind him. Yesterday, he tore that man away from darkness; today, for humankind, he is going down into darkness and the shadow of death. Saint Ephrem of Salamis, Bishop 1st Homily for the Feast of Palms

They performed well and passed the exams with flying colours. We arranged a befitting send off programme for them on 17th March.. Also the day scholars from Rosminian and Servite communities staged various programmes during that event. On 19th march, the third year brothers left the seminary after three years of their philosophy studies to Generalate for the pre-regency course.

Mathew Vattakuzhy, Rev. Frs. Alex Chalangady and James Kokkandathil, Rev. Fathers and Sisters of St. Paul Mission and Sangli MST Mission and the Parishioners of Ahmednagar. We made it also an occasion for the parents of the seminarians from outside Kerala to come together and have a beautiful experience of inputs on vocation by Rev. Fr. Mathew Vattakuzhy, Adoration conducted by Rev. Fr. Paul Puthuva, Holy Eucharistic Celebration by Rev. Fr. Thomas Thekkekara and the general addressing of the parents and seminarians by Rev. Fr. Varghese Parappuram. It was also a great privilege for them to unfold the multiple blessings of God Almighty in the first hand written magazine titled, “Lighted to Light.” The title “Lighted to Light” takes us to the idea of a “burning candle which stands so unwavering in its place, so erect, so clear in perfect readiness to be of service”.

44 Family Bond - March 2015

The three hours performance was well arranged with report of the academic year, music, skit, comedy and dance. It was really a proud moment for the mission as the entire batch of 15 was on the stage with the musical instruments. Out of fifteen, six of them are well trained in Guitar and the rest nine in Casio. They could transcend all the prejudices of the audience as they brought out their talents so confidently. We are proud of them.

“Why does this generation seek a sign?” Admire God’s wonderful works ; come out of your sleep. Are you only going to admire extraordinary miracles? But are they any greater than those that daily take place before your eyes? Are people astonished because our Lord Jesus Christ satisfied several thousand persons with five loaves and are not surprised that a few seeds are enough to cover the ground with abundant harvests? They are filled with wonder when they see our Savior change water into wine (Jn 2,19); isn’t it the same thing when rain goes through the roots of the vine? The author of both these miracles is the same… (Saint Augustine (354-430), Sermon 126, 4-5 )

Social and Charitable Work in Vincentian Congregation (An Overview) Introduction:- Some people consider ‘charitable work’, ‘social work’, ‘social welfare’ as same concept or having more or less the same meaning. Almost all religions promoted alms-giving as a virtue. Devotees invested money in the poor so that their life in the other world

53 Family Bond - March 2015

may be bright. In ashrams and religious houses alms giving for the poor were the duty of the bell attendees. Some people considered it as an annoyance. It was a routine work, no concern, no emotions. Ultimate result of such kind of helping is dishonor for the recipients and credit for the help givers. It has always increased dependence. Somehow it has helped the growth of the social evil – beggary! One thing could be noticed in the attitude towards the poor, help given to the sick and suffering was out of sympathy and compassion. Our present Pope does not encourage alms giving without the touch of ‘heart’. Concern for the Poor: Right from the beginning the Vincentians had a ‘special concern for the poor’ since it was the legacy they had from their Patron, Vincent De Paul. How they articulated this legacy in their day to day life is a question. Money and material given to the starving, small helps given to the sick and poor were expressions of charity. They expected gratitude from the beneficiaries. Even today several of the Vincentians are having this mind-set. Vincentian Congregation as such was not in a position to run big charitable works since the Congregation itself was depending on the ‘charity’ of the benefactors. Charitable and welfare works in the Congregation through individual initiatives: Of course there was the motto of our Congregation to guide them - (“Preaching good news to the Poor”). Here we have to mention the names of some of our Fathers with initiative and creativity who were instrumental for the evolution. (1) Fr Xavier Elempasserry:- Even though he was not a trained Social worker he started certain enterprises which had the distinctiveness of Social Work. In fact he started a social welfare centre – ‘Sreenikethan’. The programs he introduced are: (a) waste paper collection and sale to paper recycling companies after sorting into different categories, (b) Battery assembling unit for Thoshiba, (c) Tailoring and Typewriting center under the auspice of Sreenikethan. Through all these programs he was giving employment to the jobless (especially women).

54 Family Bond - March 2015

(2) Fr Mathew Thoyalil:- He had been trained abroad. On his return from America he had so many wonderful ideas regarding Social work. He took classes for various groups, organized seminars and workshops for voluntary workers, sisters and groups from various dioceses. He was the founder of Kerala Social Workers Forum for the diocesan Social Workers. His Social work was in the theoretical dominion than at the practical level. (3) Fr Jacob Kallarackal:- He had great compassion towards the poor. During his office as Superior General four orphanages were started. Thus the Congregation started organized welfare services. Besides this he started a carpentry training and production centre at Thottakom. Later when he came to Thottakom as superior he implemented a housing scheme. (4) Fr George Kammattil:- While he was studying abroad he found support for the orphanages started as a welfare program. When he was the Superior General he had concern for the orphans and their rehabilitation. He gained the support of Lilian Fonds in Germany and through their support helped a number of children with disabilities. Later when Fr George Kammattil was Superior at Muringoor retreat center he persuaded the fathers and implemented a large housing scheme. For the handicapped children he implemented ‘care and development’ programs in the capacity of the director of Preshitharam Sisters. (5) Fr. Sebastian Karikulam:- He always had compassion for the poor and suffering. He collected a lot of money and helped the poor. Fr Karikulam had his own system of helping the poor. It was his habit to ask for help from prospective givers - foreign or Indian. Sometimes he collected money for poor families, sometimes for children, sometimes for institutions doing service for the poor. His simplicity and concern for the poor made him a dedicated Vincentian. (6) Fr Mathew Kachappilly:- Fr Kachappilly was a dedicated Vincentian who preached Good News to the poor and he was himself so. He had a bundle of ideas to help the poor. Some of them he implemented

55 Family Bond - March 2015

taking a lot of efforts and won the appreciation of members as well as the public. (Eg. Old peoples program at Angamaly). Fr Kachappilly had a broad vision about charitable works; very often he was complaining about lack of cooperation and support from others. (7) Fr. Antony Plackal:- Charitable works of Fr Antony Plackal could be summarized into two words - Sssmile Programme. He coined this word while he was Superior General of the Congregation. For him it was more than social work; it was real Christian Charity. This program was introduced in some of our ashrams and as far as I know it is now seen in some of our formation houses only. His initiative in the field of social welfare will be remembered through Sssmile programs. (8) Kurian Elavunkal and Orphanage Board: Fr Kurian Elevunkal was director of Orphanages of the Congregation and also Member of the State Orphanage Board. It was a unique privilege for him to be a board member. He was dutiful, sincere and committed to the cause of children in the orphanages. (9) Fr Varghese Muzuthettu. He is tirelessly working for total prohibition of alcohol in Kerala. For that he is in the forefront of the war against the evils of drinking. It is a social action program. (10) Fr Thomas Njarackel: After his course of MSW he joined the Social Wok department headed by Fr Antony Kakkanattu, the Social Work Councilor of the term. With his encouragement and support Fr Njarackel could do many things. [some of the programs are explained under different heads in this article] (11) Fr Mathew Vattakuzhy: He too had his MSW from the prestigious Tata Institute Mumbai. After his studies he joined as Director of Social Work in Satna Diocese. Later on he headed the department of Social work of St Thomas Province. He could introduce new Development programs with a vision of professional Social Work. Later he became the director of department of M.P. Social Work Forum, Bhopal.

Organized Social welfare programs:- Social welfare: “Social Welfare Administration is the process of efficiently providing resources and services to meet the needs of the individuals, families, groups and communities to facilitate social relationship and adjustment necessary to social functioning.” When it is done with love and without any self interest, it is virtue. (eg. Mother Theresa) a) CRS Food for work – Some of our houses as Angamaly, Thottakom, Pachalam were working as distribution agency for CRS oil, wheat and other materials. One step further, ‘food for work’ scheme also was implemented in a few centers. Due to some problem among the representatives of CRS the entire scheme was stopped. Thus our welfare work in that area came to an end. (Some of our clever members are said to have sold some of the wheat and milk powder to provide better service in the locality! That scam is also part of the history.) b) Irrigation project Champanoor – It was a development work implemented at Champanoor with the financial assistance of Caritas India. The Project was implemented with the participation of people - “Karshaka Sangam”. Fr Mathew Kachappilly took initiative and stood firmly behind the project. Later Fr Joseph Pampackal continued the work. It was a self- governing scheme of irrigation from a pool into the farms of about 80 families. A committee elected by the ‘Karshaka Sangam’ was implementing the project for 45 years. c) Housing schemes – individual houses and cluster of Houses: Housing is a basic problem of poor people - a dream that they aspired to see realized in their life time. Two houses were constructed for domestic servants at Thrikkakara, one for Mrs. Kausu and another at Kunnamkulam for Mr. Unny. At Thottakom a number of houses were constructed for the homeless under the leadership of Fr Jacob Kallarakal with the financial support of the Little Way Association. Fr. John Manikathan and Fr. Joseph Vanianthara assisted him.

57 Family Bond - March 2015

Beginning of Social welfare Institutions in the Congregation 1. Orphanages: – Starting of an Orphanage (Balasadan) at Thottakom in 1964 was the first step in the field of social welfare. Again in the same year another Balasadan was started at Nazerath hill, Kuravilangadu. The others are: Balanagar, Balesugiri, Meenangady (1976), St Vincent’s Home for Children at Adaikalapuram, Tamil Nadu (1968), St. Vincent’s Boy’s Home, Kaloor (1975, De Paul Boy’s home, Bhimadole, A.P. (1982), Arulanander Children’s home, Chengam (1986), De Paul Boy’s home , Kariveena, A.P. (1992), De Paul Boys home, Marayoor (2000). De Paul Boy’s Home started in Kayunga, Africa (2012) is the last one. St. Vincent’s Boys’ Home, Denkanikota, T.N.(1974) has been converted into Divine Mercy Retreat Centre in 2013. The concept of Orphanage is slowly vanishing in Kerala. The children as well as their parents now consider it as a humiliation whereas in other states they consider it as a privilege to stay in a boy’s home. 2. Carpentry School for Youth attached to Balabhavan Thottakom was a progressive step in the area of orphanage. It was visualized as a sort of rehabilitation for the orphanage youth. Somehow it could not last long. Maintenance of machinery, purchase of timber, sale of furniture etc had become very complicated. It is not functioning any more . 3. Care centers: De Paul Care centre started in 1993 was another milestone in the history of social welfare institutions. It was intended for giving care and concern for cancer patients coming for treatment in RCC, Thiruvananthapuram. In the same pattern another center came up in Kozhikodu in 2003. A decent but cheep shelter was a felt need of the patients who come from far off places but have to undergo long treatment. Compassion, care, food and service that we provide to the patients are appreciated by all. 4. SSSmile Village: It is a unique institution providing service to the abandoned women and children, old people, sick and the disabled in a cluster of homes under the supervision of rev. sisters. As the name

58 Family Bond - March 2015 suggests it is a village – village of hope, care and compassion. That institute is supported by donations from well-wishers in the country and abroad. 5. Cancer Care Trust, Edappally. It was started in 2012 with the mission of helping the cancer patients with spiritual as well as monetary supports. People of good will contribute generously to this trust and the trust authorities are channeling them to the deserving patients. The volume of Demand is very high. Cancer treatment has turned to be very expensive. So even the little help provided through this trust is very valuable. 6. Social & Charitable works at Divine, Muringoor and Potta – De addiction clinic, Clinic for Mentally challenged, AIDS Patients, Old age homes, Orphanages, Housing Project, Dairy Farm etc are programs and institutions attached to the retreat center. Here the authorities are rendering assistance in Word and Deed. All the charitable work carried out under the umbrella of the Divine is a living witness to the Divine Word in action. 7. Jail Ministry: A Few of our fathers are engaged in Jail Ministry. Fr Joseph Kavalakkattu is a veteran worker. As he has retired from the field due to sickness, the program also is in peril. (To be continued .next - Congregation on the Path of Social Work) by Fr Thomas Njarackel VC

History of our Houses and IX Institutions

1. A VISIT TO VINCENTIAN MISSIONS IN EAST AFRICA Fr. James Kokkandathil, the Provincial Financial Officer of the Marymatha Province and I had visited our missions in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. We left Kochi on 26 May 2000 and reached Nairobi, Kenya on the next morning. Frs. James Edavazhithara, Paul Parekattil and Saju Kochukunnathuparambil were there to receive us at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Our Nairobi house is about 20 kms away from the airport. After staying in there for a week we moved to Tanzania where we spent a little over three weeks visiting Dar-es- Salaam, Morogoro, Iringa, Mafinga, Tabora, Kbanga and Kigoma. Again returning to Nairobi we had the opportunity to visit some more places in and around. Before our return we were fortunate to make a short trip of four days visiting Kampala and some areas around in Uganda. We were in Africa for six weeks and returned on 9th July 2000. Wherever we went we were received very warmly and were made to feel at home. Herein I want to share with you the various activities of our confreres I have seen, heard and experienced in different parts of East Africa. VINCENTIAN MISSIONS IN TANZANIA It was to Tanzania that our first African missionaries were sent. Frs. Hilarios Aranjaniyil and Emmanuel Rathappilly were sent to Mbeya in Tanzania in 1974 when Very Rev. Fr. George Kammattil was the Superior General. This attempt could not be continued and the missionaries had to return after a very short period. But again in 1979 another attempt

60 Family Bond - March 2015 was made when Frs. James Edavazhithara and Jacob Athickal were sent to the Diocese of Mbeya to work. After the language course in Tabora they were assigned to the parish of Tukuyu, with 17 outstations. Later in 1981 Fr. Thomas Kuzhippala and in 1984 Fr. Luke Mattappillichira also reached Mbeya. This second attempt was successful and our Vincentian mission in Africa took its roots. These Fathers have toiled very hard in a very hostile terrain. No setbacks could deter their determination. They continued their mission with total enthusiasm without counting the cost. Hence the parish of Tukuyu flourished with greater spiritual vigour. For some years Fr. James taught in the Minor Seminary at Sumbawanga. With the arrival of Fr. Luke in 1985 the Bishop entrusted another parish (Kyela) with 26 outstations to our pastoral care. It was during this time when we were about to consolidate our activities, there occurred the tragic death of Fr. Luke Mattappillichira due to cerebral Malaria. He died during his annual retreat, which he was attending along with Fr. Thomas Kuzhippala in the Retreat House of the White Fathers in Kabanga in the diocese of Kigoma. Fr. Luke was buried in the Priests’ cemetery in Kabanga. This is how our relationship with Kigoma begins. While visiting Kabanga our fathers invariably visited the Bishop of Kigoma too. It was in 1986 during a visit to the African Missions by Very Rev. Fr. George Manalel, our Superior General, the Bishop of Kigoma made a request to start our activities in his diocese, which has been blessed by the mortal remains of Fr. Luke. In 1987 Frs. Thomas Plackel, Thomas Palakkatt and Jose Adappoor arrived in Tanzania and in 1988 we took up the mission in Katubuka, Kigoma. VINCENTIAN HOUSE IN KATUBUKA, KIGOMA Katubuka was once a sub-station of the Kigoma Cathedral Parish. This substation had been entrusted to the care of Franciscan Missionaries from Europe for developing it. They had begun their activities and had constructed a house near the Chapel. After some years they could not continue and eventually left the place. There after the White Fathers took care of this place for some time. It was during this period that the Bishop of Kigoma entrusted Katubuka parish to the Vincentian

Congregation (in 1989 it was erected as a parish) for our pastoral works and the Franciscan House was given to us for our residence. Soon after an agreement was signed with the Bishop and our first Vincentian House in Africa was established in Katubuka. Fr. James Edavazhithara was appointed the Superior and Parish Priest. Later Frs. J. Adappoor and T.Plackel joined this house. Meantime our Fathers returned to India from Mbea for various reasons and eventually closed down our activities in Mbeya. After the formation of provinces the African mission was entrusted to the care of the Marymatha Province in 1991. It was during this time that Frs. James Vattakunnel (1991), Joseph Kuruppamparambil (1993), Joseph Mangalathukary (1994), Paul Pambrayil (1995) and Fr. Joseph Elanjickal (1996) volunteered to go to Africa. In March 1992 Fr. Thomas Plackel laid down his life in a tragic vehicle accident. He too is buried in Kabanga next to the tomb of Fr. Luke. The mortal remains of two of our zealous missionaries lie in Kabanga. This has sealed our relationship with the diocese of Kigoma and the soil of Africa. Location and activities: Katubuka is a part of Kigoma town, which is about 2000 kms away from the city of Dar-es-Salaam. This town is the Regional Headquarter of Kigoma Region. It is situated on the shores of the famous Tanganyika Lake. It touches the countries of Burundi, Congo and Zambia. The town has a port, railway station and an airport. Muslims and Christians are of equal strength here. One finds practically all the vegetation that you find in Kerala. Because of the lake lots of fishing is done here. Since this is the regional headquarters there are many people who are employed in government offices. This area has some historical importance too. When slave trade was rampant, the slaves were brought by ships to Kigoma port from where they were made to walk thousands of kilometers through thick jungles up to Bagamoya port (near Dar-es-Salaam) in the Indian Ocean. From Bagamoya they were shipped to different destinations in North Africa and Americas. Institutions: Next to the parish is a CMC Convent having 11 sisters of the province. They have a formation house for the local

62 Family Bond - March 2015 candidates, a primary school and a home for the street children. Two of the sisters teach in the Minor Seminary (Secondary school) of the diocese. The sisters do help our Fathers in all their activities. Two MST Fathers from Kerala are working in a parish a few kilometers away. Fr. James Edavazhithara was instrumental in bring them to Kigoma. They are also doing wonderful works in the parish and its substations. Parish Life: Katubuka is a very active parish in the whole of Kigoma diocese. Our Fathers have completed the construction of the huge parish church, which can accommodate about 2000 people at a time. People have contributed and are still contributing generously towards the construction and up keeping of the Church. It was consecrated on 23rd July 2000 by His Eminence Polycarp Cardinal Pengo, the Archbishop of Dar-es-Salaam. One of the positive things that I have found here is that Priests need not get involved in the material administration of the parish. It is very well taken care of by a group of elected representatives at the necessary guidance and advice of Priests. All the material needs of the Fathers are very generously provided by the people. The liturgical celebration in this parish is a wonderful experience. The duration of one mass on Sundays is about two and a half hours. There are two masses on Sundays in the parish Church and two others in the outstations. People come to the Church quite in advance to pick up a seat in front. They sing and dance. They are very attentive throughout the liturgy. The services of the Vincentian Missionaries are very much appreciated by the people. They remember all the Fathers who worked there. Fr. James Vattakunnel was the Superior of the Vincentian House and the Parish Priest of Katubuka until he went to the United States for pastoral works. He has done a great job in completing the construction of the new parish Church. Fr. Joseph Elanjickal was in charge next. The people want us to open a Secondary School for them. The parish has already procured a land for this purpose. If we have a school of our own we can recruit African candidates who have completed their Primary education and send them for training in our own Secondary School under our own supervision. There are many young people who

63 Family Bond - March 2015

are interested in sharing our mission and charism. The Bishop is very happy about the activities of our Fathers there. He has requested the Provincial Administration to take up a new parish in Uvinza. VINCENTIAN SEMINARIANS IN MOROGORO Morogoro lies about 200 kms away from Dar-Es-Salaam. Our seminarians do their Theology course here at the Salvatorian Seminary run by the Salvatorian Fathers. This is a very big seminary having its affiliation with the Pontifical Urbanian University in Rome. Here there are seminarians from different parts of Africa. The majority of the staff members are from Europe and America. From India Fr. Cesarius CMI is on the residential staff. Many religious congregations have opened their own study houses around the seminary. The first Vincentian who was sent here was Bro. Joy Vellaramkalayil. He was ordained on 2nd Aug. 2000 and is the Assistant Parish Priest and Finance Officer of the Vincentian House, Kigoma. The first two years he was residing in the Salvatorian Seminary and later in the MSFS Study House along with the MSFS seminarians. Most of the MSFS brothers here are Indians. Our seminarians get lots of opportunities to get involved in various pastoral activities. They are able to learn the local language and culture. Now seminarians are being sent to Africa on a regular basis. Fr. Justin (Tomy) Pokkathumadathil did his regency here and had his Theological studies at Morogoro. Bros. John (Binu) Rathapillil and Paul (Jinu) Puthussery followed the line. VINCENTIAN HOUSE, VIKINDU, DAR-ES-SALAAM Our house is situated on the Dar-Es-Salaam – Kilwa highway about 18 kms from the city (about 26 k. ms from the International Airport) in the parish of Mukuranga. Vikindu is a substation. We established this house in 1998. In 1995 one Mr. Joe Mtahangarwa (a military captain) who had attended a retreat preached by Fr. Bill (Joseph Kuruppamparambil wanted to donate 8 acres of fully cultivated land to him for opening a centre for spiritual renewal. Later when we decided to open a house we purchased some more land adjacent to property donated by Mr. Joe. Now we have about 20 acres of land here. Our Fathers started living

64 Family Bond - March 2015 there from 1997. We could purchase the land in our own name only after getting a special registration of our Congregation in Tanzania. In order to procure this registration Fr. Paul Pambrayil had toiled day and night with the help of Fr. Bill. At the completion of the constructions the house was blessed by His Eminence Polycarp Cardinal Pengo, the Archbishop of Dar-Es- Salaam. Very Rev. Fr. Antony Plackel, Superior General was present on that occasion. We have named this area as Jesus Town. Frs. James Edavazhithara, Paul Pambrayil and Joseph Elanjickal were responsible in giving shape to our house here. The fruits of their hard work could be very well seen in the property. When the house was being constructed Bros. Biju Valliparambil and Shiju Oroplackal were regents here. They too have worked very hard in realizing the dream of having a house fully owned by us. During those months of construction our Fathers were staying in a house owned by the mother of Captain Joe. He and his mother (Mama Josephina) support the Fathers in all their activities. We grow coconut, cashew, maze, cassava, bananas and oranges in Vikindu. We see a lot of teak coming up here. Fr. Joseph Mangalathukary was in charge of the house here. In spite of his health problems he was managing this house all- alone. Until recently there was no telephone or electricity here but lately that problem is solved. Fr. Vincent Rathappilly and Bro. Jinu Puthussery have already joined Fr. Mangalathukary. Now as a community they can make proper plans to develop this area, which is entrusted to our pastoral care. Our Fathers look after the spiritual needs of the local community of Vikindu. In this outstation a little hut is used as the chapel. Though most of the people here are poor, illiterate migrants, they enthusiastically co-operate in the parish activities. On the other side of the highway opposite to our property, the Vincentian Sisters from Austria have bought some acres of land and they are planning to build a dispensary shortly. They also plan to bring one of their formation programmes to this place. Also the Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Nyeri (from Kenya) have taken some land in the vicinity in order to build a school. There is a lot of scope for various apostolates in this area.

65 Family Bond - March 2015

Mbagala is a big township after Vikindu towards Dar-es-Salaam. Here there is a Capuchin monastery and attached to it there is a big retreat centre. Fr. Bill used this facility to preach several residential retreats for different groups of people. He had programmes here twice or thrice every year. Fr. Bill’s programmes were always overbooked. The stay at this centre for retreats is very expensive and hence ordinary people cannot afford it. Our own retreat centre at Vikindu shall be of great help. During our stay in Dar-es-Salaam we had the opportunity to meet Archbishop Polycarp Cardinal Pengo. Frs. James Edavazhithara and Mangalathukary were present. The Cardinal received us very cordially and expressed his happiness that we are in his Archdiocese. He is extremely happy that we are taking the initiative of developing Jesus Town. VINCENTIANS IN KENYA The house here is situated at the heart of Nairobi city. It was donated to the Vincentian Congregation by the Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Nyeri, a local religious Congregation in gratitude to the benefits their sisters had derived from the retreats preached by Fr. Bill. As a gesture of thanksgiving the Major Superiors of the Congregation had decided to make a very big gift by donating one of their houses in Nairobi for the mission of Fr. Bill. There are about 50 cents of property and an old house. Fr. Bill continued his preaching mission in different parts of Africa staying in this house. Hearing about this offer Archbishop of Nairobi, Maurice Cardinal Ottunga who knew the Vincentians through the preaching of Fr. Bill, invited us to Nairobi to open a House there. Very Rev. Fr. Alex Aikkara, the former Provincial Superior and Fr. James Chelapurath, the Assistant Provincial and the Councillor –in- charge of the Missions visited Nairobi and welcomed the idea. When this decision was communicated there was already a new Archbishop in Nairobi. Welcoming us to his Archdiocese the new Archbishop wanted us to involve in parish ministry along with our preaching mission. Accordingly Fr. James Edavazhithara was deputed to take up the parish ministry. Fr. James was appointed to the parish of Kalimoni about 35 kms. away from Nairobi city on the Tikka road.

66 Family Bond - March 2015

VINCENTIAN PRAYER HOUSE, NAIROBI Presently the Vincentian House at Nairobi functions as a retreat centre. In this property we have three small houses and a prayer hall that is built recently. This hall can accommodate about 100 people. Frs. Joseph Kuruppanparambil, Paul Parecattil and Bro. Binu Rathappillil stay in this house. Srs. Celine and Margaret who belong to the Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Nyeri too stay in this house and assist our Fathers in their ministry. Sr. Celine is the former Mother General of the Congregation. In this house the Blessed Sacrament is exposed the whole day for public adoration. A lot of people from the city come intermittently to the prayer house for worship and adoration. Every evening from 5.00 to 6.00 pm there is common intercessory prayer before the Blessed Sacrament followed by a solemn celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Many people attend very actively in these functions regularly. Besides this regular programme, Bible classes, Seminars, Counselling courses, prayer and healing sessions for different groups are arranged. Recently there was one programme for Kenyan soldiers and another one for Rwandan refugees. A steady increase in attendance shows that all these programmes are very much appreciated. Frs. Bill and Paul lead these programmes very effectively and efficiently. Because of the pioneering works of Fr. Bill (one man army) the Vincentians and the Popular Mission retreats are known all over East Africa and many other countries of African Continent. There are also regular Popular Mission Retreats and Healing Masses arranged in different dioceses and parishes in Kenya. Tens and thousands have already attended the retreats conducted in Kenyatta University Campus and Nayyo Stadium in Nairobi. Frs. Bill and Paul conducted a retreat for some of the educated and highly placed people of Nairobi, too. That retreat was a great success. There is a plan to organize Healing Masses in various slums around Nairobi City. Because of the lack of personnel our Fathers are not able to accept all the invitations. It is a happy thing to note that there is a dedicated bunch of lay people who voluntarily associate themselves in assisting our preaching

67 Family Bond - March 2015

ministries in different parts of Kenya. They under the chairmanship of Mr. Joe Kamau gather every Tuesday to discuss and plan out different programmes that our Fathers take up. They include influential politicians, businessmen, doctors, engineers and media professionals. They not only give their professional assistance but also provide necessary financial and material support. For them to be attached to this cause is a great privilege and honour and hence they happily spend their valuable time and energy. All of them have made various retreats under Fr. Bill and have re-discovered the meaning of their Christian life. I was deeply moved and edified by their dedication and enthusiasm. During our stay in Nairobi we had a chance to meet the Archbishop Ndingi and one of his Auxiliaries, Bishop Kamau. They spoke very high of our activities. Archbishop Ndingi asked us to extend our preaching missions to various parishes is his archdiocese. He told us to write to parish priests informing them of our willingness and availability to conduct Popular Missions. He has promised to endorse these letters. One day Fr. Bill took us to the Apostolic Nuncio in Nairobi who is very much aware of the preaching mission of the Vincentians from India and was very happy to note that our preaching missions do function as a fitting alternative to some of the preaching and healing crusades conducted in and around Nairobi by various Pentecostal and protestant sects who often cash on the illiteracy and emotions of the people. We also paid a visit to the former Archbishop of Nairobi Maurice Cardinal Ottunga who is now retired and lives in a home for the aged. It was he who had invited us initially to Nairobi. Cardinal Ottunga had once attended the retreat of Fr. Bill and was very much impressed by it. When he met us he spoke of his own personal experiences and told us that while he heard Fr. Bill preaching, some of the Biblical passages, which he had heard so often, began to mean different. He felt being deeply moved and touched. Cardinal Ottunga came across to us as a saintly person. Fr. Bill has extended his preaching mission to different countries in Africa, Europe and America. He is fully on the move. His zeal equals to that of St. Paul. His age and the recent illness that he had

68 Family Bond - March 2015 are no hindrance in his determination to bring the Good News of Jesus to the ends of the earth. There are thousands who flock to get a glance of Fr. Bill. His programme schedule is already arranged for the next two years. Languages, cultures and distance are no barriers for Fr. Bill. He is able to make any type of journey through any terrain in order to reach the people who need him. The message he preaches sounds so simple and down to earth. But what he tells touches the hearts of many and changes their lives. Thanks to the groundbreaking efforts of Fr. Bill many of the Bishops, priests and religious of East Africa are aware of the Vincentians from India. Because of this we are welcomed everywhere. The arrival of Fr. Paul Parecattil in the Nairobi prayer house is a great blessing and a tremendous boost to the services conducted there. Since Fr. Paul is residing permanently in the house he is able to organize and lead the various activities in the prayer house in an orderly way. Being an experienced preacher and counselor Fr. Paul’s services and classes are very much liked and appreciated. His erudition in Sacred Scriptures is a great help. I had the opportunity to take part in a Healing Mass conducted by Fr. Paul in a place called Muranga. There were about 2000 people attending the same. Fr. Paul could speak for hours without break and there was such an overwhelming response from the part of the crowd who sang and danced celebrating the festival of the Word. KALIMONI PARISH IN NAIROBI Kalimoni is a parish in the Archdiocese of Nairobi built up by the Holy Ghost missionaries. One Irish Priest was the pastor until recently. This parish has got four sub-stations – Kilimani, Gascheroro, Juja and Juja Farm. When Fr. James was sent to Kalimoni, the Archbishop had the idea of bifurcating the parish with Juja as its headquarters along with Kilimani and Gascheroro sub-stations and entrusting the same to our care. Meantime the Irish Priest, with whom Fr. James stayed as assistant, fell seriously ill and had to go back to his native country. So the Archbishop has asked us to take up Kalimoni parish itself. In between Fr. Saju Kochukunnathuparambil has reached Nairobi and has joined Fr. James as his assistant in the parish. Now both Frs. James and

69 Family Bond - March 2015

Saju are fully involved in pastoral works. They have to say five Masses on Sundays and have to involve in so many other activities of the parish. In the parish and sub-stations the lay people take a lot of initiatives and priests are supported in many ways. The people in general are very co- operative and supportive. They contribute both in cash and kind. On Sundays everyone even little children make an offering. The Sunday liturgy with its singing and dancing is very lively. Our Fathers have already identified a few acres of land for the new Juja Church and they are already in the process of raising funds to purchase the same. These days Fr. James is away in the United States for mission appeals and in his absence Fr. Saju is ably managing the whole parish. The advantage is that with the English language one can communicate with most of the people. Majority of the people here belong to the Kikuyu tribe and their language is Kikuyu. Of course they all can follow Swahili as well. Attached to the parish there is a primary school and boarding for girls run by the sisters. The children of the boarding make the weekday’s liturgy at Kalimoni very lively. Our Fathers have already won the hearts of the people here. IN UGANDA Before we came back to India we had the opportunity to visit some areas in Uganda, a country where Fr. Bill had preached several of his Popular Mission retreats. Fr. Bill is a household word there. Most of the Bishops in Uganda wanted Fr. Bill to come again and again to preach Popular Missions in their dioceses. Now that Fr. Bill has already introduced the Vincentian Congregation here, there is a growing demand from the part of the Official Church to start a Vincentian foundation here. One of the religious congregations, born in Uganda, Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Gulu, has come forward offering about 13 acres of land for the same in Namugongo where we have the holy shrine of the Ugandan Martyrs (St. Charles Lwanga and 21 of his companions). Millions gather there to celebrate the Martyrs’ Day. This place is about 15 kms from Kampala, the capital of Uganda. The main International Airport at Entebbe is not very far from Namugongo.

70 Family Bond - March 2015

The Archbishop of Kampala, His Eminence Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala who is a personal friend of Fr. Bill has already welcomed us to his Archdiocese. The Vicar General and the present Auxiliary Bishop of Kampala Msgr. Kakozza used to assist Fr. Bill in his preaching missions. The city of Kampala is built on the banks of Lake Victoria. It is a green country with almost all the vegetation that we find in Kerala. We can also find a lot of Malayalees working in Kampala. In one of their homes we celebrated the Holy Mass once in . A little over half of the population of Uganda is Catholic. Their faith formation is very weak. It is still wound up with a lot of superstition, inherited from their tradition. This is the area where we can step in and do something effectively. During our visit we had a chance to visit two dioceses namely Kasana-Luweero and Hoima. The Bishops and priests were waiting for hours to receive Fr. Bill. They all seek him for his prayers and blessings. A WORD OF GRATITUDE Jubilee is a time for us to take stock of things and re-dedicate ourselves to the great divine plan for our Congregation in the Africa. This is also a time for us to gratefully remember those of our members who have cheerfully and courageously undertaken the challenge of being in Africa. All our Major Superiors, past and present, and the visitors have taken keen interest in developing this Mission. I want to make a special mention of Rev. Fr. James Edavazhithara whose perseverance and dedication is exemplary and praiseworthy. Very Rev. Fr. Alex Aikkara’s official visit and his reports have made tremendous impact on many of our members. We cannot pass this moment without paying homage to Frs. Luke and Thomas who have laid down their lives in Africa. The torch that we light from their tombs should continue burning in our hands with our zeal and enthusiasm for the missions. I thank all our confreres in East Africa for their love, hospitality and cordiality. Fr. John Vallayil

IX. ii. A SHORT HISTORY OF DE PAUL INTSITUTE OF RELIGION AND PHILOSOPHY Fr. John Vallayil Part I. Background: The division of the Vincentian Congregation into independent regions took place in 1987. Later the Regions were erected as Provinces .This division was a decisive step in the growth and expansion of the Congregation in its membership, ministries and houses. It necessitated a stage of common formation of the young seminarians of the whole congregation so that the interaction, communion and co-operation between the provinces and members could be nurtured and fostered. This became a pressing need to foster the unity and integrity of the entire Congregation by giving an effective and dynamic witness to its charism of preaching the Good News to the Poor after the model of St. Vincent de Paul in the contemporary world. Availability of seats for the seminarians in different major seminaries in India could not cope with our growing demand. This pressing need propelled the General Synaxis 1992 to look into the possibility of opening a common philosophate for the entire Congregation under the auspices of the Generalate with the total co-operation of all the provinces in providing necessary personnel and resources. The mandate was to start it ou-side Kerala. The succeeding General Administrations acted promptly to execute this project. (Already in 1987 the General administrative team under the leadership of Very Rev. Fr. George Manalel had thought of our own philosophate. Fr. Manalel during one of his visits to Rome had arranged a scholarship with His Eminence Cardinal Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches for someone to study Philosophy in Rome. Fr. John Vallayil made use of this scholarship. Thereafter many other members were sent abroad and within India to pursue studies in Philosophy.) The next Superior General Very Rev. Fr. Paul Kariamadam and his team worked to find an appropriate location and finally zeroed in at the present site - a lush coconut grove of 12+ acres of land in

72 Family Bond - March 2015

Bheemanakuppa Village, by the side of Hosapalaya road ,off Mysore road, in the periphery of Bengaluru city in Bangalore South Taluk. Availability of a well-built farm house, 3 phase electricity with a transformer right in the midst of the well-fenced property with plenty of ground water from a single tube-well were the main attractions in finalizing the purchase of this land. The farm was owned by one Mr. Premnath Gowda of Koramangala who had retired from the Military Forces. The sale deed was executed on 26th May 1992 in the joint-names of our rev. Fathers Paul Kariamadam, Mathew Thoyalil, George Kattumana and Varghese Chakkumkuzhy in line with the rule that only agriculturists could purchase and own agricultural land in Karnataka. Mr. Varghese Vattakunnel (Varghese Chettan) was very obliging to take care of the property at the initial stage. Later on 27th June 1992 Fr. Paul Parecattil, who was finishing the M. Th. Studies at St. Peter’s Pontifical Seminary and knew Bangalore rather well, was transferred from Edathotty Ashram to this farm as the ‘priest-in-charge’. After consulting the Archdiocesan authorities it was decided to lay the foundation for the Philosophate on 27th September 1992, feast day of our Heavenly Patron, St. Vincent de Paul. After the celebration of the Holy Eucharist in the afternoon the foundation stone was blessed by Msgr. Joseph D’ Silva (who later became the Bishop of Bellary) in the presence of some of the neighbouring ‘religious’ and friends. Since there was a generous outpouring of blessings from above (torrential rain) Msgr. D’ Silva could not lay the foundation stone. Later in the same evening our Superior General Very Rev. Fr. Paul Kariamadam laid the foundation along with the Provincials Frs. George Kammattil and Mathew Thoyalil and others in a spot not very far from the existing farm house. In view of the hardships in getting permission to construct large buildings in the green-belt (agricultural land) a tentative plan of constructing 3 or 4 large farm houses was thought of. Moreover, changing the land-use meant a prolonged and expensive procedure. It was not a very practical alternative. Meantime there came a proposal from Mr. Hanumanthappa to sell a couple of acres of his uncultivated land touching our farm. The sale deed for this plot of land (measuring about 3 acres and 30 guntas) was made on 6th October 1992 in the

73 Family Bond - March 2015

names of Frs. George Panthackal and Sebastian Nediyani. It was decided to pursue vigorously to get the required permission to build convenient structures for the seminary in the newly purchased vacant plot. Through the efforts and contacts of Fr. Thomas Emprayil, Assistant Superior General, a donor from Holland (a religious Congregation of Brothers) came forward with a substantial offer for the construction of the infrastructure. This generous gesture was a clear sign from God to go ahead with the construction of the building. At that time the area around was bit isolated and uninhabited. Varghese Chettan and Fr. Paul showed great courage in living here alone with very minimum facilities. Their selfless service is greatly appreciated. Varghese Chettan (Mr. Varghese Vattakunnel) moved to the Generalate at Edappally on 5th January 1993. Later in the month of March Fr. Varghese Chakkumkuzhy, one of the previous General Councillors came to assist Fr. Parecattil in making the plans. Fr. Varghese remained here for a month and returned to Kerala awaiting his appointment in the Satna Mission. Fr. Paul Parecattil registered the De Paul Service Society here after drafting the required memorandum of association. The new General Administration under the leadership of Very Rev. Fr. Antony Plackal took the plans forward. In the month of May 1993 Fr. Jacob Athickal one of the General Councillors moved to Bangalore as the priest-in-charge and both Frs. Jacob and Paul together proceeded to get the required permission to build in the agricultural land. In February 1994 Fr. Paul Parecattil moved to Vincentian Vidyabhavan, Aluva to finalize his M.Th. thesis. (Another important thing that happened during this period was the establishment of the Clarist Convent (Clare Bhavan) in the neighbourhood and it was blessed on 6th December 1993.) Since the effort to procure the required permission to construct the structure in Bangalore was found tardy, cumbersome and expensive affair, there came up a suggestion before the General Administration to buy some land in Kerala and proceed with the construction. For this purpose some sites were identified and negotiations were made but this move was discouraged. After a prolonged effort and with the help of some influential people in Bangalore, the permission for the

74 Family Bond - March 2015 construction was obtained from Ramohally Panchayat on 17th March 1994. Mr. Mathew Korattiyil of Koramangala had taken a lot of interest in getting this long-awaited approval. Soon a detailed plan was drawn, got it approved by the local Panchayath and the construction was underway on a war-footing from the first week of April 1994. Prof. Narayana Reddy, a renowned architect from Bangalore drew the plan according to our need. Initially it was planned for accommodating 50 seminarians but of course keeping in mind the possibility for future expansion. Galaxy Constructions Limited, Bangalore of Mr. Mathew Korattiyil was awarded the contract by Fr. Antony Plackal on 23rd May 1994 and a deadline was set to make the facility available for the academic year of 1995–1996. On the very same day itself the old foundation stone which had been blessed by Msgr. Joseph D’ Silva was dug out and was re-laid in the new site by Very Rev. Fr. Superior General. Two engineers, Mr. Aaradhya and Mr. Kantharaj stayed here at the site to oversee the construction under the direction of one Mr. Kariappa, the chief engineer. Fr. Jacob Athickal skilfully, efficiently and meticulously oversaw the construction from our part. The shape of the present De Paul is the fruit of his sweat and hard work. No one can adequately thank him for the enormous sacrifices he had undertaken for the realization of this grand project of the Congregation. The whole carpentry work was entrusted to one Mr. Augustine hailing from Mookkannur, Kerala and his team. Practically the whole of the timber required for the building was purchased from Kerala. Interim arrangement: Inauguration of the Philosophate at Edappally Awaiting the constructions at Bangalore the General Administration opened the philosophate temporarily for the academic year 1993–94 attached to the newly constructed Vincentian Generalate at Edappally. Fr. John Vallayil, who had returned from Rome in November 1992 after studies in Philosophy, was appointed officially as the Rector of our philosophate on 5th June 1993. A consultative meeting of all the members of the administrative bodies, members from various formation houses and some of the experienced senior members was held at the Vincentian Vidyabhavan, Aluva on 18th April 1993. Many important and practical suggestions were made in that meeting and the name of the new philosophate as DE PUAL INSTITUTE OF

75 Family Bond - March 2015

RELIGION AND PHILOSOPHY was suggested and adopted. It was also recommended that all our candidates of philosophy course should pursue their graduation privately. It was strongly suggested that the curriculum should incorporate courses on Vincentian Charism and Spirituality. The urgent need to provide opportunity for the seminarians in the Philosophate to get acquainted with the different ministries of Congregation was also stressed in that gathering. On 13th June 1993, the day on which the Church celebrated the feast of St. Antony of Padua, one of the acknowledged Doctors of the Church and incidentally on the patron’s day of Very Rev. Fr. Antony Plackal, the Superior General, the first batch of seminarians (altogether 12) arrived at the Generalate, Edappally. Besides Fr. Rector, Frs. Mathew Kachappally and George Panthackal were assigned the task of Spiritual guidance to the seminarians. The seminarians were accommodated on the first floor of the Generalate building a part of which was still under construction. The red letter day was 15th June 1993. At 11.00 am on that auspicious day Bishop Mar Jacob Manathodath, Auxiliary Bishop of Ernakulam – Angamaly Archdiocese (later Bishop of Palakkad) celebrated the Holy Eucharist. Thereafter Bishop Mar Manathodath, invoking the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, inaugurated the De Paul Institute of Religion and Philosophy in a simple and grace-filled ceremony in one of the class rooms (present private chapel on the second floor of the Generalate) attended by hardly 30 people including the seminarians. Besides Bishop Abraham Mattam of Satna, Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Etturuthy, Rector of St. Joseph’s Pontifical Seminary, Aluva, some of the Staff members of Aluva seminary, Very Rev. Fr. Antony Plackal, Superior General and the members of the General Administrative body and the Provincial Superiors and some of the Vincentian Priests and seminarians were present on that occasion. Regular spiritual exercises, philosophy and language classes and all the other co-curricular activities of the seminary were introduced in the Institute from the very beginning. Many staff members of St. Joseph’s Pontifical Seminary, Aluva helped us very generously during those two years of De Paul Institute’s existence at Edappilly. In spite of their heavy commitment in the seminary and other pastoral responsibilities, Frs. Thomas Chakkiath (later Auxiliary Bishop of

76 Family Bond - March 2015

Ernakulam – Angamaly), Jose Thachil, George Njarakunnel, Thomas Ettackakunnel, Alex Tharamangalam, Antony Poothavelil and George Kurikkoor came to give classes. Generous help of Prof. Mathew Ulakamthara and Prof. Cyriac Vembana is also thankfully remembered. for the philosophate. He had returned from the United States after his Doctoral studies in Sociology. Besides his classes in sociology, he handled philosophy and English language classes. It was during this time that our seminarians had an exposure to the “Ayalkoottam” project introduced by the department of Social Sciences of Mahatma Gandhi University. Under the expert guidance of Fr. Mappilaparambil the seminarians spent 2 weeks in the project area near the University Campus. The valuable service of Fr. Sebastian Mappilaparambil is gratefully remembered. The seminarians could also participate in a Popular Mission conducted in the parish of Kottamam. For the second batch of seminarians, B. A. (Philosophy) registration (correspondence course) was done in Mysore University. (To be continued in the next issue of Family Bond) IX. iii. KALICHANADUKKAM. Vincentian Ashram and Vincentian Minor Seminary in Kalichanadukkam are situated 15 km away from Nileshwar and 23km from Kanghamgad in the district of Kasaragod, Kerala. During the tenure of Rev. Fr. George Kammattil as provincial superior, about six acres of land with a house had been purchased with the intention of starting an ashram in Kalichanadukkam. Rev. Fr. Antony Thekkinieth was appointed to fulfill that mission. He arrived here in October 1992 and the documents of the land was signed on October 29th . On November 1st 1992 Rev. Frs. Antony Thekinieth and John Kallatil occupied the house after an unofficial blessing. After a few repairs and maintenance, the Ashram was officially blessed and inaugurated by Mar. Geroge Valiamattam, archbishop of Tellichery in the presence of Rev. Fr. George Kammattil, on November 20th 1992. Since the inauguration of the house Holy Mass had been celebrated for the public in a small chapel every day. Rev. Fathers were looking after the spiritual needs of the people around the Ashram and were helping out in the parishes of this area. The Province thought developing more ministries that would meet the needs of the people. So they decided to start a parallel college. Rev. Fr. Paul Pambrayil was appointed as the superior of the house and

78 Family Bond - March 2015 principal of the college. With the tireless effort of Fr. Paul we unofficially started De-Paul Parallel College on June 15th 1993. As the building for the college had not been completed we began the classes in a small room behind a shop in the town. Later, on August 14th the college was officially blessed and inaugurated by Mar George Valiyamattam, Archbhishop of Thalassery. Rev. Bro Thomas Kunnel was sent to the Ashram to look after the construction of a new chapel. It was blessed on May 9th 1995 by Mar. Geoge Valiyamattam. While Fr. James Manithara was principal of the college, degree courses were started on August 8, 1997. But the circumstances were not in favour for the development of the college. Due to lack of enough bus service to Kalichanadukkam, the attendance of the students was getting diminished. In order to overcome the situation, when Rev. Fr. George Vazhapalmkudy was principlal, a bus service was started from the college, but that also was a failure. Finally we came to the point of closure and finally, the college was closed in June 2005, while Rev. Fr. James Thoyalil was principal of college. Since the closure of the college, we started conducting retreats here. One day convention has been conducted on every second Saturday of the month. As the construction and maintenance of the Novitiate house at Meenangady were going on , the novitiate had to be shifted to elsewhere. Kalichanadukkam was found suitable for the same and the Novitiate was here for the period of May 2007 to February 2009 while Fr. Davis Arackal was the novice master. The General chapter of 2013 decided to have degree course for the seminarians before they went for philosophy. With the intension of facilitating residence to the degree students of Marymatha province at Edathotty, the first year minor seminary has been shifted from Edathotty to Kalichanadukkam in June 2014. The old college building is renovated and converted into the Minor Seminary. Fr. Joseph Thazhathemuriyil , rector at Edathotty Seminary has been transferred to Kalichanadukkam as the superior of the ashram and rector of the seminary. The seminary was blessed and inaugurated on 1st June 20014 by Very. Rev. Fr. Varghese Parapuram, the Superior General, in the presence of Very

Rev. Fr. Paul Puthuva, the provincial superior. At present there are 22 seminarians. Rev. Fr. George (Joice) Parapilly and Rev. Fr Augustine Padinjarekutt are vice rector and spiritual father respectively. Rev. Fr. Augustine Padinjarekutt is in charge of retreats and conventions in the ashram. Due to the poor attendance, the one day convention that has been going on here on every second Saturday is discontinued and three days’ retreat once in two months on different topics for different groups has been introduced.. We had one such retreat in February 2015. Besides, ‘five days of retreat’ for sisters and ‘three days of retreat’ for youth and children are conducted during holidays in April. Fr.Thazhathemuriyil Joseph

Removal of Clerical State It is not anything new in the Church and in Religious communities that clerics abandon priestly and religious life. In spite of exhortations and warnings of the legitimate superiors, if they are not returning to the diocesan presbyterate or to the religious community, usually they are suspended from exercising the power of the orders. Often the legal action ends with the suspension of the cleric from exercising the power of the orders. Neither the suspended cleric nor the legitimate superior consider further action that the law prescribes in such cases. Even if the cleric does not request dispensation from the obligations of the Order of priesthood, his clerical state can be removed according to the provision of the following canon. This is just to inform that for such cases a procedure is envisaged by the Code of Canons of Eastern Churches. Major Superiors can make use of this provision of law in case of clerics who do not petition for a dispensation from the obligations of the Order of priesthood. CCEO c.397 The Patriarch, with the consent of the synod of bishops of the patriarchal Church or, if there is danger in delay, of the permanent synod, can grant the removal of the clerical state to clerics having domicile or quasi-domicile within the territorial boundaries of his own patriarchal Church and who are not bound by the obligation of clerical celibacy or, if bound, are not petitioning a dispensation from this obligation; in other cases the matter is deferred to the Apostolic See.
