1 Fudge The Elf Ken Reid The Laura Maguire collection Published October 2019 All Rights Reserved Sometime in the late nineteen nineties, my daughter Laura, started collecting Fudge books, the creation of the highly individual Ken Reid. The books, the daily strip in 'The Manchester Evening News, had been a part of my childhood. Laura and her brother Adam avidly read the few dog eared volumes I had managed to retain over the years. In 2004 I created a 'Fudge The Elf' website. This brought in many contacts, collectors, individuals trying to find copies of the books, Ken's Son, the illustrator and colourist John Ridgeway, et al. The invited artists, Rabiya Choudhry, Rob Churm, Craig Coulthard, Malcy Duff, Hideyuki Katsumata and Sofia Sita, have each visited the DC Thomson archives and are exhibiting their own individual takes on the rich cultural history of our city’s publishing. The exhibition features murals, prints, drawings, sculpture and video alongside archive material. ARTISTS IN THE EXHIBITION RABIYA CHOUDHRY Edinburgh-based artist Rabiya Choudhry’s work takes inspiration from childhood memories and subconscious dreams. She has created new work for the exhibition loosely based on her own family and inspired by DC Thomson’s riotous comic strip The Numskulls, about a team of tiny human-like technicians who live inside people’s heads and run their bodies and minds. Choudhry’s own comic creation, The Coconuts, is the basis for a new pair of paintings in homage to The Numskulls. The paintings are titled dream baby dream and houses for the holy, in reference to songs by the bands Suicide and Led Zeppelin respectively.

  • “Youve Got This”
TASMANIAN CANINE ASSOCIATION Katelyn Innes “Youve Got This” VIRTUAL BENEFIT SHOW 2021 On the 8th of May 2021 Katelyn’s world changed. Just 25 years old and 23 weeks pregnant with her second child Katelyn collapsed at a dog show suffering a life- threatening subarachnoid haemorrhage. Young, strong, healthy and vibrant, Katelyn was brought up in the dog world. Her mother Yanina and Grandmother Fran along with Katelyn breed British Bulldogs under the “Paseya” prefix, also having over a 20 year love interest in their other heart breed the Dalmatian, Katelyn and Yanina started their own kennel and now breed them in partnership under the “Ourdals” prefix. Progressing through the Junior Handlers ranks and representing the State on several occasions, Katelyn is very well known in the show scene, not only for handling her own dogs to many Best in Shows but campaigning others as well. Not one to say “NO”, she goes out of her way to help others whether it be handling, holding, or even saving that illustrious “Top Knot!” Katelyn ‘s involvement in Juniors has led her to be on the Junior Handlers Committee which she has served on for several years, she is also Secretary of an All Breeds Club and a committee member of her Breed club in Tasmania. Understandably, this medical condition has had a devastating impact on Katelyn’s life and her nearest and dearest, she was in ICU in a coma for nearly 3 weeks before being transferred to a ward where she has started a rehabilitation program. Katelyn’s condition has affected her movement and co-ordination (significantly more on her left side) and she is working hard on her motor development, in both gross and fine motor skills.

  • Beano Comic #1 – July 30 1938 – Reprint Identification Guide
phil-comics auctions - Beano comic #1 – July 30 1938 – Reprint Identification Guide Found a Beano comic #1 dated 30 th July 1938 stashed away and can’t tell whether it’s genuine? The chances are that it’s a reprint and this guide will help you find out. Can you tell which of these two is the original? The comic on the left is the original. The Beano comic was first published in 1938 with a cover date of 30 th July. To many collectors it is the holy grail of British comics with the comic still going strong today. Original examples often change hands for four figure sums. The Beano comic’s publisher DC Thomson have published the original sales ledger records which showed that an incredible 442,963 copies of the first issue were sold throughout the nation. To date, just 25 or so of these are known to have survived. Several more may exist in private collections not included in this tally and we have no doubt that a few more are out there in attics as yet undiscovered. That said, the original is a genuinely rare item. Given that The Beano is a household name and has been published continuously since 1938, it will come as no surprise that several reprints of that iconic first issue have been produced. In 1978, DC Thomson Firsts reprinted full sized versions of eight of their famous comics, including The Beano, bound into a hardback book. We once saw what we believed to be the first Adventure comic (clearly a reprint and likely from this book) with string binding so it’s possible that a few copies have been yielded from these books, but we doubt too many.

  • 4-Comic-Comprehensions
Comics and YOURComprehension FREE BEANO RESOURCES TEACHER NOTES Children love to read comics and while finding a way to encourage reading for pleasure is always a big win in and of itself, there are plenty of ways you can use this enthusiasm to fuel learning in the classroom. Even a short comic strip helps children become familiar with narrative structures and once this knowledge is embedded it’s more easily transferred to other, more stretching contexts. The illustrations play an important part too in opening up new vocabulary and children will constantly make inferences as they read, without really knowing it. So why not try these enjoyable activities with your class as a way of getting everyone – including your typically more reluctant readers – to develop their reading skills? There are three full stories from Beano to share with the children and, having enjoyed these, they can tackle the comprehension / inference activity sheets, which have a few writing challenges included for good measure. Pupils can practise composition too with a series of jumbled up comic strips that need reordering, and the chance to write their own story. What’s in the pack? • Numskulls comic strip and comprehension sheet A testing situation for Edd causes the Numskulls to uncover Mr Throbb’s marking secret! • Dennis and Gnasher comic strip and comprehension sheet Dennis’s dad brings back a giant box of half price custard from the supermarket. What could possibly go wrong? • Bananaman comic strip and comprehension sheet Eric gets the call when the whole town is covered in ever-expanding slime.
