    Lakes International Comic Art Festival Competition 2019 HELL OF A COMIC ART CHALLENGE STUDENT BRIEF DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES 30 AUGUST 2019 For this year’s competition the Lakes International Comic Art Festival hopes to encourage students of the arts, young comic art enthusiasts and the next generation of comic creators to showcase their talents by exploring the depths of Hell to create a new comic character. The competition is a tribute to Hellboy and the winning entry will be showcased as part of a prestigious Hellboy exhibition during the Lakes International Comic Art Festival 2019. Artist Duncan Fegredo is curating the exhibition of Hellboy artwork, which will include artwork from Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, Duncan Fegredo and others.     DRESS UP AS... Dennis the Menace TO MAKE THE HAIR 1. Cut a length of card that will fit comfortably around your child’s head, then add an extra 3-5cm more at the end. Staple the ends together to make a headband. Cover the staples with tape to protect your child’s head. YOU WILL NEED ✓ Black card A1 size 2. Cut four strips of black ✓ Scissors card that are 4cm wide and the length of your child’s ✓ Stapler head. Use one strip to create ✓ Pencil an arch from one side of the headband to the other. ✓ Ruler/tape measure Staple in place. Repeat on ✓ Strong tape e.g. parcel the opposite side so you have tape or gaffer tape a cross. Do the same with the other two pieces of card, placing them diagonally over the cross. Staple into place to make a skullcap. Place some tape over the staples to protect your child’s head. 3. Print out the hair template and draw 4. Cut out the hairpieces. Staple the smaller round it on to black card. Then draw a bigger hairpiece to the front and the bigger border around one of the hairpieces (this will hairpiece to the back for Dennis’ wild hair. go at the back of your Dennis hairpiece). TO MAKE THE STRIPED TOP 1. Fit the top over a piece of cardboard so it is quite flat. Stick on evenly-spaced strips of masking tape until you have stripes all the way down and around both sides of the top. 2. Now paint on the areas that are not masked out with the tape.

However, historians are not yet in agreement as to when the medium became mature. This thesis proposes that the medium’s maturity was cemented between 1985 and 2000, a much later point in time than existing texts postulate. The project involves the analysis of how an American mass medium, in this case the comic book, matured in the last two decades of the twentieth century. The goal is to show the interconnected relationships and factors that facilitated the maturation of the American sequential art, specifically a focus on a group of British writers working at DC Comics and Vertigo, an alternative imprint under the financial control of DC.
