Member Driving Biography: Bernie & Lore Homer Both Bernie and Lore have been faithful members of BVDC since 1982. Bernie was president of the club for 8 years and started the BVDC Shows. During that time, the Homers owned and showed “Dawnhill Storm Cloud” (until his death at age 32). “Storm” was named by Horse World as “Morgan Carriage Horse of the Century”!

For the past nine years Bernie and Lore Homer have owned “Sunny Acres Ebony Nite” who is a 19 year old Morgan gelding. He lives with Bernie and Lore together with Bucky (a Mini) and Tuffy (an Australian Sheep Dog) in Oreland, PA. Some of the winnings for “Ebony” over the past year (2012) were:  AMHA Silver Medal for Open Competition points which also qualifies him to have the word “Champion” added to his registered name.  USEF Reserve National Champion for carriage driving  Pa. Morgan In-Hand Champion for 2012  Pa. Morgan Carriage Champion of the Year for 2012  DVHA Morgan Champion of the Year for 2012  In-Hand Champion of the USEF Mason-Dixon Show  BVDC 500 hour Trot & Track award

Ebony also won the Devon Scurry classes for the last 4 consecutive years that he showed there, as well as several wins in the Single Horse 4-wheel carriage marathons.

BVDC Competitive Trail Drive - April 21st

It was a bright sunny (but chilly!) day when 7 turnouts and 2 out-riders convened at the South Appleton parking lot at Fair Hill NRMA for our first ever BVDC Competitive Trail Drive event at around 8 a.m. Debbie Camplone, the organizer of the event, had plenty of breakfast food and beverages set up in the shelter of her big trailer waiting for the participants when they arrived. It was a very relaxed atmosphere with plenty of opportunities to greet old friends and make new ones as everyone got their and carriages ready for the drive. The pre-drive inspection of horses by our judge Cate Peloquin started around 9 a.m. Cate performed both the hands-on exam as well as the vet exam (P&R and such) on each horse in turn. The inspection also included hand trotting the horse out a distance, then circling in each direction before returning to Cate. All of Cate’s observations were recorded on the competitor’s score sheet by the scribe in order to be used as the baseline against which to compare the post-drive examination. Everyone starts out with 100 points; then during the post-drive inspection, any negative differences from the pre-drive observations are tallied Ben Fangman (trailmaster) and Cate as points to be Peloquin (judge) - photo by Louisa Emerick subtracted from 100. In addition to being scored on the before/after changes, there are points subtracted for coming in either under or over the time window for completing the course.

The first competitor embarked on the course at about 10:30 a.m. followed every few minutes by the next competitor. The two out -riders (the Debbie’s) positioned themselves at the midpoint and end of the order of go so that they could be available to provide assistance to the competitors during the drive if needed.

Everyone arrived Cate inspects Clara Levitsky’s horse “Star” before back safe and the drive as Debbie Camplone scribes - photo by Debby Donovan sound from the drive with the last competitor completing by about 12:30 pm. They were given 30 minutes to strip carriage and harness from their horses and return to Cate for the post-drive judging. This inspection was conducted the exact same way as the pre-drive routine. In fact, Cate pointed out that everything you did during the pre-drive exam should be done the same way in the post-drive exam. For example, if you carried a whip to urge your horse forward during hand-trotting in the pre-drive exam, you should also carry the whip during the post-drive exam. Otherwise you Zana and her pony “Dolly” charge to the finish line! - would probably lose points if your horse looked less energetic photo by Louisa Emerick afterwards! Another example - if your horse was wearing

(Continued on page 9)

BVDC Competitive Trail Drive - cont’d (Continued from page 8) boots pre-drive, then he should wear them post-drive as well. Anything that could affect his movement should be the same pre- and post. In fact, the same handler should take the horse through both the pre- and post- exams. After the post-drive judging was completed, everyone fed/watered their horses and then found their way over to Debbie’s trailer again for more food - a wonderful hot lunch of Sloppy Joe sandwiches (steaming hot in 2 big crockpots!), pasta and bean salads, chips, and lots of cookies. After the scoring was completed, the awards were presented. The “ribbons” were appropriately colored plastic sweat scrapers! There was a nice gift for first prize and a “goodie” bag for each competitor. After a leisurely lunch and lots of chit-chat, everyone packed and left for home by about 3:00 pm. Based on many comments heard during lunch, it seems that Janet and Tim Kunert out on the course - photo by Louisa everyone thought this Emerick event was very well organized and lots of fun! A huge thanks is due to Debbie Camplone for coming up with this idea and then organizing it from start to finish, including handling the food arrangements, all the entry paperwork, and coordination with Fair Hill. She really did a spectacular job providing a fun outing for our club! Thanks also to Cate Peloquin (our judge) and Ben Fangman (our trailmaster) for the great education we all received about CTDs! Finally, thanks to Toots Mahre and John Holmgren who were positioned out on the trail at the tricky spots (around the tunnel and such) to ensure no one had difficulties, and to Louisa Emerick for her expert photography skills!

14th Annual Lancaster County Carriage & Antique Auction on June 28, 2013

Last year, we had 180 carriages along with miniature horses, equestrian items (harness, tack, carriage appointments and horse-related items), antiques, quilts, shrubs, flowers, and more!

Now in its 14th year, auction goers are drawn to the Carriage & Antique Auction by the welcome home spirit they feel as they mingle with members of the plain community and local Bird-in-Hand volunteers. More and more people arrive on Thursday evening to peruse the rows of antiques and rub shoulders with other carriage and antique enthusiasts.

A new venture for the Lancaster County Carriage & Antique Auction is the Chuck Wagon Dinner and Early Bird Auction on Thursday evening, June 27 at the auction site in the village of Bird-in-Hand. The meal is served from 4 pm till sellout with the auction starting at 5:30 pm. The event continues on Friday, June 28 from 8 am - 6 pm, with the main auction of fine carriages, one-of-a-kind antiques, great selection of miniature horses, high-quality crafts, and hardy nursery plants that benefits the Hand-in-Hand Fire Company.

The Thursday evening Dutch oven meal will be prepared in outdoor kettles over fires by the Valley Forge Black Pots Chapter of the International Dutch Oven Society. And for the first time ever in the history of this event, an Early Bird Auction will be held on Thursday evening. It will include a combination of crafts, antiques, and tack as well as many other items.

Auction Coordinator Jake King comments, “The addition of Thursday evening activities will help to relieve the very full day on Friday. Friday’s pace can be less hurried and more keenly focused on the excellent selection of top quality carriages, sleighs, wagons, and buggies that will be presented for sale.”

As in past years there will be simultaneous auctions on Friday with up to eight auctioneers selling handmade crafts, quilts, shrubs, flowers, nursery items, equestrian items (harness, tack, carriage appointments and horse-related items), miniature horses, carriages, and a wide array of antiques and furniture. The food tent where community volunteers serve up homemade doughnuts, hot sandwiches, cold drinks, and pie with ice cream will be open Thursday evening and all day Friday.

The Carriage Auction typically draws over 3,500 people, a number which includes 1,200 bidders. Parking is near the auction grounds and horse-drawn hay wagons serve as shuttles. Enjoying fun in the country and helping to raise funds for the Hand-in- Hand Fire Company are two great benefits of spending time at this premier auction.

ADS Booth at PA Horse Expo (Feb 21-24)

The first, hopefully annual, American Driving Society booth at the PA Horse Expo in Harrisburg, Pa was held on February 21-24 at the Farm Show Complex. With a much larger space and full arena for exhibitions, Harrisburg draws from an even larger area than Timonium and has space for even more vendors. Staffed by primarily MLMDC and BVDC club members, the first attempt went very well.

There were the usual faces we knew passing through, but the real focus of both our booth in MD and this one is the new and aspiring driver. A ton of Mid-Atlantic resources and flyers on beginner clinics were handed out. Carriage Machine Shop and Pleasurethyme Farms were there, a first for Carriage Machine.

Perhaps the most exciting thing to come out of the event was a plan to have the carriage related vendors in proximity next year, a carriage The ADS Booth - which included several BVDC alley as it were. Ben Nolt Wheelworks will be there and there are handouts - Photo by Anne Councill more who are seriously considering participating.

The groundwork for a demo in the arena was also developed. It was fun to meet people from farther north in New York and the Williamsport area as well as those from New Jersey and MD.

What made a huge difference to all of us was that Sue and Don Fair brought their motor home for the duration. That little home away from home with food and lodging for those that stayed for the duration was invaluable. Our previous Mid-A rep, Jessica Axelsson came up for the whole show in spite of the fact that she was a month away from having her first child. It was a boy by the way! Mother and son are doing great! Pam Kister was invaluable for our booth along with her duties for PA Equestrian, especially for the planning for next year.

As always, many thanks to the crew that did shifts in the booth, helped set up and break down: Teresa Palumbo, Sharon Myers, Pam Schneider, Susan Roberts, Pat Kozakowski, Anne Leese, Gail Aumiller, Ann Sanders, Marjorie Richmond, Marcie Cowie, Markie Blom, Lee Royer, Toots Mahre and Darrell Martin.

NEW!!! SPECIAL CLINIC on Friday, May 31, 10:00 am Open to all Competitors and non-Competitors This very special 2-part clinic will be held at the Fair Hill site of the 2013 Elk Creek CDE. The first half of the clinic will feature Lisa Singer giving invaluable pointers for improving your accuracy in driving your dressage test. Through years of experience and countless tests, Lisa has developed her skills and ability to hit the turning points and letters with precision and to drive her dressage tests with point-on accuracy. She will share her methods and pass on her "tricks". The second half of the clinic will present Richard Pringle, a familiar face at the Elk Creek CDE. For much of the CDE's history, Richard has designed the course and he has frequently managed the scoring. Since the late 1980's Richard has been building courses for many of the American combined driving competitions -- designing the course, laying out the track, and constructing the hazards. He will add an appreciation of the skill and work that has gone into making the marathon the experience that it is. The clinic will begin at 10:00 am on Friday, May 31, at the site of the Elk Creek CDE, Fair Hill, Maryland. To register for this clinic, please send a check for $30, payable to “Fair Hill International, Inc.” to Cheryl Banks, PO Box 25, Chesapeake City, MD 21915
