Performance, Television, and Social Media, THEATER 118AC, 2020* Four (4) semester credits Course Description This course examines the intersections of performance and media— specifically the media forms of television and social media in the U.S.— with a focus on how various types of difference are enacted, articulated, represented, and played on TV and social media platforms. We will study the many intersections of performance theory and television, which include the TV industry’s roots in New York theater, the unique modes of acting required by television roles, and the numerous ways that television audiences “perform” for one another in response to the media they consume, for example by writing stories based on their favorite shows and sharing them online. We will also study how contemporary social media platforms operate as performance spaces, in which all of the users are the “actors,” performing for one another. We will then discuss how issues pertaining to race/ethnicity, gender, and sexuality are depicted on television and discussed on social media. We will focus on representations of African Americans, indigenous peoples, Latinxs, Asian Americans, women, and LGBTQIA people. Students will be expected to apply the theoretical concepts and frameworks from performance studies (which they will learn in Modules 1 and 2) to the television texts and social media that they analyze. This course has been approved to fulfill the UC Berkeley American Cultures requirement. Prerequisites There are no prior course requirements. Course Objectives After successfully completing this course, you will be able to: ● Identify the core scholarly literature and key concepts and theories of performance studies, media studies, new media studies, critical race studies, and gender studies, particularly theories pertinent to the cultural forms of television and social media. -

THE INTERNET MEME AS A RHETORIC DISCOURSE: INVESTIGATING ASIAN/ASIAN AMERICANS’ IDENTITY NEGOTIATION Zhao Ding A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2015 Committee: Alberto González, Advisor Radhika Gajjala Lisa Hanasono © 2015 Zhao Ding All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Alberto González, Advisor This study draws concepts from rhetorical criticism, vernacular rhetoric, visual rhetoric, and whiteness studies, to investigate how Asian/Asian Americans’ online identities are being constructed and mediated by Internet memes. This study examines the use of Internet memes as persuasive discourses for entertainment, spreading stereotypes, and online activism by examining the meme images and texts, including their content, rhetorical components, and structure. Internet memes that directly depict Asian/Asian Americans are collected from three popular meme websites: Reddit, Know Your Meme, and Tumblr. The findings indicate that Internet memes complicate the construction of racial identity, invoking the negotiation and conflicts concerning racial identities described by dominant as well as vernacular discourses. They not only function as entertaining jokes but also reflect the social conflicts surrounding race. However, the prevalence and development of memes also bring new possibilities for social justice movements. Furthermore, the study provides implications of memes for users and anti-racist activities, as well as suggests future research directions mainly in the context of globalization. iv This thesis is dedicated to my mother (1954-2011) and her unconditional love. She spent her whole life nurturing me, encouraging me, and inspiring me. Without her, I would still be in my comfort zone. -

The transformation of Traditional TV to YouTube with Social Media and its Reflections in Turkey Mihalis (Michael) Kuyucu İstinye University Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences, İstanbul, TURKEY ABSTRACT Today, YouTube attracts more people than the mostly-watched television channels due to its audience reaching up to one billion viewers every month. YouTube is the biggest video sharing social media network of the world and has started to challenge the traditional television media with the investments it makes recently. The platform does not broadcast only the videos shared by its users but also the special programs which it produces in its production studios and took one more step further than the traditional television media with the unique contents created. This study analyses the race of YouTube platform against the traditional television media in historical processes and the youth’s habit of use of YouTube, a social media platform. Keywords: New Media, social media, television, YouTube INTRODUCTION The term ‘New Media’ was coined in the 1970s with the information- and communication- based researches and by the researchers who made social, psychological, economic, political and cultural studies. However, the meaning touched upon in the 1970s expanded together with the accelerated computer and internet technology of the 1990s and achieved a different dimension [1]. Doctoral Dissertations. 895. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations/895 Alien Comforts: The Languages and Foodways of Chinese Americans and Hawaiian Locals in U.S. Popular Culture Jared Demick, PhD University of Connecticut, 2015 My project deals with how the grotesque and simplifying distortion of Chinese American and Hawaiian Local languages and foodways has been used to promote facile multiculturalist encounters and the ways in which contemporary writers from those ethnic groups have attempted to articulate other ethnic formulations free from what I call minstrel gestures. These writers instead valorize innovation and transformation over an adherence to past traditions already pillaged and stereotyped by hegemonic interests. This strategy—which I dub the creole relational mode—has worked to varying degrees of success in creating the possibilities for oppositional cultural formations. While these oppositional cultural formations are often liberating, they sometimes can obscure persistent interethnic tensions in U.S. culture. The project’s contribution to the existing scholarship lies in its central claim that language and food are invested with so much meaning in U.S. interethnic discourse because these two forms of difference are easily appropriated and internalized by individuals across otherwise rigidly constructed ethnic boundaries.
