Living An Outdoors Lifestyle The owners of this character home came across it when moving into the area and looking for a place in the country. With its white frontage and thatched roof, it has chocolate box good looks and sits in pretty gardens with a paddock leading down to the river. “We have loved living here, it compares to ‘The Good Life’ in that we have maintained the gardens, grown our own vegetables, kept chickens and sheep and taken care of two Shetland ponies for neighbours.” The family have three children, all of whom were living at home when they came here, and it’s been a great place in which to raise them. Old And New Combine The house is Grade II Listed and is one of the oldest houses in Tasburgh. The central area, comprising the current sitting room, was an open Medieval hall house with a smoke bay. Around 1600, the upper floor, comprising the main bedroom and landing, was built using Elm floorboards (and possibly re-used Medieval beams) The chimney stack replaced the smoke bay. The wings on each side were added in the 1970s by a well-known local sculptor who was then living here. The work has been done very sympathetically and the whole house flows comfortably. During their time here, the owners have made further improvements, including replacement windows, a new farmhouse-style kitchen and renovated bathrooms. Occasions And The Everyday Different areas of the house come into their own at different times of day, with the orientation of the cottage allowing light to pour in. The dining room is a real highlight, with what would have been an external wall showcasing some lovely timbers, plus a stunning vaulted ceiling and a mezzanine area. The sitting room is cosy and forms the original part of the property, as does the master bedroom. The kitchen is delightful and the Aga keeps it toasty in the winter months. The owners enjoy entertaining and have hosted family and friends at the cottage regularly, with Christmas day dinners and Twelfth Night parties over the festive season and garden parties and barbecues in summer. So Much To Enjoy The house has a good connection to the garden and paddock with beautiful views from every window. There’s a riot of colour in spring and summer, plus a herb garden that the owners have planted, with a lovely patio looking over it. “The cottage enjoys a sheltered position and when the winds buffet the neighbouring trees, we can sit outside in relative calm.” There’s also a wildlife pond and fenced vegetable garden, both sure to appeal to nature lovers and those with green fingers. The soil here is fertile and the wildlife diverse and profuse, with otters in the river and buzzards overhead. The cottage sits on a quiet road on the edge of the village that benefits from a strong sense of community. With a school and playing field, it’s great for children, with a pub, village hall and social club for the adults. You’re only a short drive from Long Stratton and Wymondham but also have easy access up to Norwich too, so you’re well placed for everything here.
