  • Suppliers of Equipment in Africa
Suppliers of equipment In Africa The distillation and extraction industry in Africa is relatively small and localised outside of the North African centers of Egypt and Morocco, and Southern Africa (South Africa, Swaziland). New entrants to the industry can find it hard to identify suppliers of equipment (stills, condensers, extractor vessels etc) in stainless steel, steam boilers, and other necessary materials (drums, jugs, filter papers etc). The development of the industry in Africa would benefit greatly if there was greater sharing of information on the location of suppliers. New entrants would find it easier to identify necessary suppliers, and the concentration of orders on particular suppliers would encourage the development of skills and expertise – this is particularly necessary in the areas of fabrication of stainless steel vessels and condensers. Some contacts of companies involved in the manufacture of distillation/extraction equipment or the capability to do so (primarily the capability to work with stainless steel) or supply of materials based in East Africa are given below. The Newsletter would welcome information from Readers on other suppliers of relevant equipment and materials from all regions of Africa, so that the listing can be expanded. Please send any information to [email protected] The contacts are provided as a service only. NO RECOMMENDATION IS IMPLIED. 1. • Dunoon ZA Community Case
    I. Executive Summary Tucked in between relatively affluent residential areas and an industrial estate, Dunoon is a culturally diverse township on the outskirts of Cape Town.1 As a young, emerging and increasingly overcrowded space, Dunoon might be expected to represent a site of integration between South African and foreign national residents. However, integration has not meaningfully occurred, and the daily realities for foreign nationals are quite different from those of South Africans. Foreign nationals do not feel part of the community, do not feel safe in the community, are often unaware of who community leadership is, and tend to stick to their own national groupings. While not an insignificant minority, they are certainly not considered as part of the broader Dunoon community. South African citizens tend to focus collectively on attaining service delivery, and appear to barely be aware of the struggles of foreign nationals. Dunoon has had a series of violent attacks on foreign nationals since the first large-scale xenophobic attacks in South Africa started in 2008. A major theme that emerged from research was that a disconnect existed between community members and community leaders. The ward councillor, Lubabalo Makeleni, is a dominant figure in Dunoon. He prefers to centralise all information and decisions to his office, which allows for very little autonomy among other government and citizen-driven community structures. This has created a number of problems, which will be elaborated on in Section V, and has led to power struggles within community leadership structures. This disconnect from on-the-ground structures and broader community leadership seriously hinders the efficiency of conflict resolution in Dunoon.

  • South Africa Diary First Visit
South Africa Diary First Visit Dates (first visit): 8th February 2009 to 22nd March 2009 42 Days - 22 on the road. 2528 miles (4044 km) Day 1 – Monday 9th February London Heathrow to Cape Town After a good flight touched down at Cape Town at 6.15 a.m. to glorious weather, unlike the last and only time we had been to Cape Town when we had torrential rain. Even though it was still early it felt like 32oC rather than the 32oF when we left England and the deep snow behind – bring it on! Through immigration without too much queuing. Bags collected, through customs without being stopped and we were back in Africa. Day ONE of our big adventure. Quite a long walk to the hire car place past much frantic building work getting ready for the 2010 Football World Cup next year. At Auto Europe picked up our steed, a white Kia Picanto. I had gone for the cheapest but perhaps this was a little bit too much! From the airport made our way into Cape Town and sat in a stop-start rush hour queue on the N2. Leaving the N2 dropped down to Hout Bay where we were staying at the Makuti Lodge and decided to call in and see if we could dump our cases before going off for the day. Unfortunately it was still only about 9 a.m. and took the owner Doreen by surprise as, not surprisingly, our room wasn’t ready. However, she happily took in our cases and directed us into Hout Bay to a breakfast place where we had a full English breakfast! Back to book in at Makuti before calling into the shopping centre at Hout Bay.
