    Fort Wright, Tennessee and Camp Brown, Tennessee Patriotic Covers and Lettersheets Conrad L. Bush Buried in the papers of a Tennessee family (Haley) which were recently sold as a group at a paper ephemera auction were two very interesting Confederate patriotic covers. Each of the two covers contained the original letter written on previously unrecorded Confederate patriotic lettersheets. Fort Wright, Tennessee Jefferson Davis Medallion Patriotic Cover (JD-1C) Fort Wright (Tennessee) 5c Paid June 1861 The Cover – The envelope is a bi-color (black and red) Jefferson Davis Medallion patriotic cover (Type JD-1C with 11 stars in both the flags and the sunburst) with Verse 53. The lengthy verse on this cover has not previously been listed as used with this Jefferson Davis Medallion patriotic design. The postal markings on the cover are in manuscript “Fort Wright 5c Paid Care of Capt Cross” and addressed to Mr. W. C. Hailey, Adamsville, Tenn. Fort Wright was not a listed Tennessee Confederate post office but was located near Randolph, Tennessee which was the post office that most likely handled the cover. The cover is not dated, but the letter is dated June 25th 1861. The Letter – The original patriotic lettersheet shows a slightly different Jefferson Davis Medallion design (Type JD-1B with seven stars in the flags and 10 stars in the sunburst) in black. The previously unrecorded part of the lettersheet is the “Fort Wright, Randolph, Tenn.” printed slogan which was not known to exist until now. The letter is mostly camp news but has some interesting historical content.     KENTUCKy’s CIVIL WAR HERITAGE GUIDE SESQUICENTENNIAL Pulitzer-Prize winning historian Dr. James M. McPherson summarized Kentucky’s role during the American Civil War (1861-1865): “It is scarcely an exaggeration to say that the Confederacy would have won the war if it could have gained Kentucky,” McPherson writes, “and, conversely, that the Union’s success in retaining Kentucky as a base for invasions of the Confederate heartland brought eventual Union victory.” When planning for Kentucky’s observance of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear said, “This will be a four-year commemoration and not a celebration. We don’t want to glorify war. We want to remember the Kentuckians who fought and died in the conflict, the suffering of its people and the changes brought by the war, especially the freedom of African- American slaves.” Today, through the development of more and better visitor opportunities in a combination of heritage tourism, education, events and activities, Kentucky is highlighting the Bluegrass State’s importance during America’s most significant conflict. Kentucky offers a great combination of venues for exploring Civil War history including libraries, museums, historic sites, and more which are sponsoring presentations, living history demonstrations, reenactments, and a host of other programs and events to showcase the state’s unique Civil War history.     Kimberly Wren, Daniel Brock, Elizabeth Cahill, and Annie Blankenship 1/29/2008 1 Civil War Archaeology Introduction The Civil War is the single most important historical event in 19th century America (Smith 1994a). Thus, in order to understand the 19th century experience one must have a sound understanding of the cause, impact and aftermath of the Civil War. The war marked a critical transition in American politics, economy, technology, and social order (Geier and Potter 2000). Slavery ended and as a result 3.5 million blacks were emancipated establishing a newly defined ethnic group: freed persons of color (Geier and Potter 2000; Robertson Jr. 1988). Three million men fought in the war, there were one million casualties, and 618,000 died (Faust 1986; Robertson Jr. 1988). The South began Reconstruction and even today has never fully recovered (Geier and Potter 2000). Tennessee, on the other hand, was least affected by Reconstruction (Seymour 1982). All this being said, the significance of the Civil War in American history should demand urgency on behalf of archaeologists. Military, industrial, cemetery, domestic and other Civil War sites must be investigated scrupulously, if not for the sake of American history, then for the sake of the thousands that died. Archaeological inquiry is crucial in defining the Civil War. It not only corroborates or refutes the historical record but it also provides the material, relevant facts upon which to build the discipline of Civil War archaeology (Smith 1994a). Such facts provide historians, as well as members of other disciplines, with new pertinent information concerning the war. They stand alone and go beyond written history (Smith 1994a).
