LENTEN MIDWEEK SERIES Songs of the Savior March 29, 2017 “Get Out!”

“Not all the blood of beasts On Jewish altars slain Could give the guilty conscience peace Or wash away the stain.” (LSB 431:1) We can only be saved through Christ’s blood. Consider these words, penned by and promised by God, “I, I am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake, and I will not remember your sins.” (:25) “I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud, and your sins like mist.” (44:22) Jesus cleanses us from sin through His blood. Blood was all He had. His disciples had deserted Him. His garments had been gambled away. Even His Father had turned His back. Blood was all He had, but the blood of Jesus is all we need. “Believing, we rejoice To see the curse remove; we bless the Lamb with cheerful voice And sing His bleeding love.” (LSB 431:5)

OPENING HYMN: “Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness” LSB 563

5 When from the dust of death I rise 6 Jesus, be endless praise to Thee, To claim my mansion in the skies, Whose boundless mercy hath for me, This then shall be my only plea: For me, and all Thy hands have made, Jesus hath lived and died for me. An everlasting ransom paid.

Please stand OPENING SENTENCES Psalm 102 P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. {2 Corinthians 13:14} C Amen. P Hear my prayer, O LORD; let my cry for help come to You. C Do not hide Your face from me when I am in distress. Turn Your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly. P For my days vanish like smoke; my bones burn like glowing embers. C My heart is blighted and withered like grass; I forget to eat my food. P Because of my loud groaning I am reduced to skin and bones. C I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins. P I lie awake; I have become like a bird alone on a roof. C My days are like the evening shadow; I wither away like grass. P But You, O LORD, sit enthroned forever; Your renown endures through all generations. C You will arise and have compassion on , for it is time to show favor to her; the appointed time has come. P For the LORD will rebuild Zion and appear in His glory. He will respond to the prayer of the destitute; He will not despise their plea. C Father, You invite us to come into Your loving embrace. Doing so, we confess our sin; make known our stubborn pride; and renounce all ungodly thoughts, words, and actions. P Upon this, your confession, I announce the amazing and transforming grace of God to all of you. Christ’s blood was shed; His tomb is empty; His return is certain, and you are eternally forgiven in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P The Name of the LORD will be declared in Zion and His praise in C When the people assemble to worship the LORD.

PRAYER OF THE DAY P Let us pray. Gracious Father, You provided the gift of Your Son who suffered and died to cleanse us from our iniquities. As our atoning sacrifice and Passover Lamb, His blood forgives us and frees us from all sin. Hear us as we give You thanks and praise for this wonderful salvation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen.

T HEME HYMN: “Sing We Exiles” Tune: #559 Sing we exiles in our sadness, Though we wander dispossessed; Sing for hope of future rest. Jesus is our Way, our gladness, Straight’ning crooked paths we roam,

Leading to our Father’s home. From His holy city driven, Stripped of ev’ry earthly good, Owning just His flesh and blood— Even these are freely given For us exiles in our loss, Strength’ning us to bear the cross. Sing we exiles in our yearning To be healed from ev’ry wrong; Sing the distant triumph song. Father, guide us in returning With repentance to Your will, Lead us ever homeward still.

Midweek 6 – Apr. 5: One Little Word Can Fell Him Isaiah 49:1–6

Maundy Thursday – Apr.13: He Prepares a Table Isaiah 49:7–13

Good Friday – Apr. 14: All :13–53:12

For next week, read Isaiah 49:1–6 and answer these questions:

1. The Servant joins others who were set apart at birth for God’s purposes (Isaiah 49:1; e.g., :4–5; :13–17, 31–33; Galatians 1:15). What does this tell you about God’s plan for your salvation? …for your life?

2. How would you describe a “mouth like a sharp sword”? (Isaiah 49:2) What do you recall from Christ’s ministry that reminds you of His powerful Word?

3. How is our Savior’s plan of bringing His light to the ends of the earth (Isaiah 49:6) being realized in your life?
