VOL. CV. (wilts., vol. VI.) One hundred and fifty printed. : Wiltshire Parish Registers Edited by W. P. W. PHILLIMORE, M.A., B.C.L., AND JOHN SADLER. VOL. VI. Xondon Issued to the Subscribers by Phillimore & Co., 124, Chancery Lane. 1908. PREFACE. In this volume are printed the Marriage entries in the Registers of eleven parishes— six of which commence in the sixteenth century ; three in the seventeenth ; and the remaining two in the early years of the eighteenth. Once more evidence is afforded of the risks to which these important records have been exposed in the past. At Great Somerford the earlier Register has been lost as the result of a fire in 170^ at the house of the Parish Clerk; presumably the volume was kept there, for a memorandum in the earliest Register at present remaining states that it "was burnt with ye house." One naturally turns to the Transcripts supposed to have been sent regularly to the Bishop, and from this source the records of twenty-eight Marriages have been obtained ; but unfortunately the transcripts for the whole period have not been found. The Register of Little Somerford begins a year later, 1708, but there is no explanation of the absence of the earlier volume. At Patney a different kind of danger is reported. There the Register, which was begun in 1592, was "found by chance in parsson Biggs his garden 1635", and the entries were transcribed into the present earliest volume. And again, in the neighbouring parish of Chirton, the earliest Register was " lost for divers years " ; no information is forthcoming as to the date or manner of its recovery ; we only know that it was recovered by the entry of the loss made afterwards. There is a gap at the time (from 10 January 161] to 27 November 16 15), but similar gaps are not infrequent, and it is perhaps fair to assume that the Marriages for the "divers years" during which the book was lost were after- wards recorded. 13792'/0 Happily these cases of want of proper care may be called things of the past ; the latest instance, that of Great Somerford, having occurred two centuries ago ; but with the experience of the early part of last year at Kirkby in Ashfield, and Annesley, in ; Nottinghamshire, fresh in the mind it cannot be said that anxiety in regard to fire is altogether unwarranted, although Church- wardens are understood to see that the Registers are kept in a properly painted iron chest. Other Registers, it is a pleasure to state, have been more care- fully preserved, and are practically perfect from their commence- ment, that of Castle Eaton dating from 1549, only about ten years later than the first institution of these records. The Editors desire to express their best thanks to the clergy- men of the various parishes whose Marriage Registers are printed here for their kind assistance and co-operation ; and particularly to those who have supplied transcripts—the Rev. C. M. R. Luck- man, of Castle Eaton, the Rev. H. W. Cholmeley, ofKemble, the Rev. F. H. Manley, of Great Somerford, who supplied the tran- script for Little Somerford as well as for his own parish, the Rev. Dr. Gardiner, of Southbroom, and the Rev. W. Symonds, of St. Andrew's Mission, Salisbury, who supplied that for Winterslow they also desire to thank Mr. J. H. Parry, who afforded valuable help by transcribing the Marriages of Southbroom, Patney, Chirton, Marden and Alton Barnes, and also Mr. Thomas H. Baker, who transcribed the RoUestone Marriages. It must be remembered that these transcripts of the Registers are not " evidence " in the legal sense. Certificates, if required, must be obtained from the Clergy who have custody of the Registers. The Editors will be greatly obliged for further assistance in the transcription of Registers, as it is only by means of this assistance that the work can be carried on, and what still remains of these valuable records preserved to posterity. VV. P. W. P. J.S. 124^ Chancery Lane, June, igo8. Miltabira f arialj H^giatfra. Marriages at Castle Eaton, 1549 to 1812. Note.—There are four volumes of Marriage Registers here prior to the end of 1812. Volume I— 1549 to 1653—consists of twenty-nine parchment leaves, of which Nos. 25,27, and 28 are half leaves only; the size is 15 in. by 5j in., and the binding new parchment. The condition and handwriting are good except on the leaves numbered 23 and 25. The dates are arranged according to the civil years in the earlier part of this volume, and later on according to the ecclesiastical year. Volume II — 1654 to 1719— is also of parchment; it contains twenty- three leaves, size 11 in. by 6 in., and is bound in stout cardboard, covered with leather. The condition and handwriting are both good. Folio 5 is three parts blank, and about three inches have been cut off the last two folios. Volume III— 1724 to 1754—consists of forty-two pages of coarse paper. The size is 16 in. by 6 in., and the volume is well bound in vellum. Only page 3 and part of page 4 are occupied with Marriage entries. The condition is good and the handwriting fair. Volume IV— 1754 to 1 812—consists of twenty-five pages of the usual forms adopted at the time. The condition and handwriting are both good. These Transcripts have been kindly made, and collated with the originals, by the Rev. C. M. R. Luckman, Rector of Castle Eaton, and are printed with his permission. Volume 1. VOL. I. AND VOL. II., 1573—1618. Vol. I. is the original paper register. It contains the— •Baptisms, 1573—1584 and 1588—1611. Marriages, 1578—1617. Burials, 1573—1581 and 1584—1617. Vol. II. is a fair copy of Vol. T., made on parchment about 1599. It contain!, all the Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials from 1573—1599, including those now missing from Vol. I. Botli those volumes arc well bound, the writing is legible, and they arc in a good state of preservation. The copyist did not follow the spelling of Vol. I. but adopted his own system of spelling both the Christian and surnames. Hence there is scarcely a line which is a verbatim et literatim copy of the original. The present transcriber has not thought it necessary to note the variations in the spelling of the Christian names, nor such minor differences in the surnames as the addition or the omission of an " c," " a," " y " for an " i," or the doubling of a consonant, but every important variation in a surname has been carefully noted in italic type between parentheses. VOL. 111., 1620—1667. This volume is also well bound and legible. Several of the entries are partially mutilated owing to the bottom corner of several of the loaves having been torn off. There arc no entries between 22 May, 1625, and 29 March, 1627, but with this exception the register appears to have been most carefully kept, even during the Commonwealth period. On pages 99 to 106 are several marriage entries for the years 1653 to 1656, many of which appear to have no connection with Ecclcshall, as couples seem to have come here from the neighbouring towns and villages to get their banns published.

The initial elation of receiving the money was soon suppressed when the responsibility of what had arrived was fully realised! This small Council is not used to such large sums and does not have the infrastructure. It took many days of research and careful deliberation to establish what the money could be spent on, how it could be paid out and the criteria for deciding what qualified for payments. We tried desperately hard to encourage consultation with residents and asked for suggestions for how the money should be spent. We received quite a lot, not all of which would be possible, but when we went back to people and asked if they could elaborate on their suggestion and do a bit of research we got – silence! The only people who responded with firm proposals were the Village Hall and the Play Area.

You are besides, Sir, materially con= nected with the county, by the important station which you have so long held in representing the town and port of Dover, to the universal satisfaction of your constituents, who, confident of your attachment to the best of kings, and the happy constitution of this country, (an attachment which you have perse= vered in with unabated constancy) have continued their approbation of your conduct by repeatedly chusing you, with the same fervent zeal, in two suc= cessive parliaments.
