GAME NOTES – OCTOBER 8, 2019 GAME #8 VANCOUVER GIANTS AT PRINCE ALBERT RAIDERS

THE STORY SO FAR – The Giants are off to a 4-3 start. The G-Men started the season with back-to-back wins up North against Prince George on September 20th and 21st. Last weekend the G-Men went 1-2, having dropped games to both Portland Kamloops before securing a 4-0 win on Sunday, September 29th against Kelowna. So far on their Eastern Swing the Giants are 1-1. They started their road swing in Brandon on Friday night, and fell 3-0 despite peppering the Brandon goal with 40 shots. The next night in Winnipeg, David Tendeck made 36 saves to earn his second straight shutout as the Giants blanked the Winnipeg ICE 4-0. Tonight the Giants continue their road swing in Prince Albert against the Raiders marking the first time these two teams will have met since Game 7 on May 13th.

OPPOSITION – The Vancouver Giants and Prince Albert Raiders need no introduction. These two teams met in the 2019 Rogers WHL Championship series. The Raiders won the series in seven games thanks to an overtime goal from Dante Hannoun late in the first overtime period. So far in 2019- 20, the Raiders are off to a 4-0-2-0 start. They’ve scored 18 goals while only surrendering nine against.

SUPER DAVE – Giants goaltender David Tendeck is one heck of a roll. The Arizona Coyotes prospect brings a 3-0 record into tonight’s game with a 0.33 goals-against-average and a .987 save percentage. His two shutouts are tied for tops in the WHL along with Raiders netminder Boston Bilous. Tendeck has stopped 76 of his first 77 shots that he has faced this season.

GAME NOTES – OCTOBER 8, 2019 GAME #8 VANCOUVER GIANTS AT PRINCE ALBERT RAIDERS

DRAFT DAY:

The 2019 NHL Draft in Vancouver was a memorable one for two Vancouver Giants. Both Bowen Byram (D – 2001, Cranbrook, BC) and Trent Miner (G – 2001, Brandon, MB) were selected by the Colorado Avalanche. Bowen Byram was snagged by the Avs with their first-round pick (fourth overall). Byram became the fifth Giant to ever be selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. He and Evander Kane share the honour of being the highest Vancouver Giants ever selected in the NHL Draft.

In Round 7 Colorado once again came calling, this time for goaltender Trent Miner. Miner became the third Giants goaltender ever selected in the NHL Draft joining David Tendeck and Tyson Sexsmith. 2019 marked the first time ever that one NHL team selected two Vancouver Giants in the same draft.

The following Vancouver Giants have been drafted by NHL Teams:

- Bowen Byram (COL – Round 1, 2019 – SIGNED) - Milos Roman (CGY – Round 4, 2018 – Unsigned) - David Tendeck (ARZ – Round 6, 2018 – Unsigned) - Alex Kannok Leipert (WSH – Round 6, 2018 – Unsigned) - Trent Miner (COL – Round 7, 2019 – Unsigned)

MILESTONE WATCH:

- Giants defenceman Dylan Plouffe is 60 games shy of reaching 311 games played in a Giants uniform. If he gets there he’d surpass Neil Manning for the all-time games played record for the G-Men. Plouffe also leads all active Vancouver Giants with 106 career WHL points. - Milos Roman is third all-time in Import Scoring for the Vancouver Giants. Through 105 games, Milos Roman has scored 42 goals while adding 56 assists for 98 points. The Slovakian-born prospect surpassed Mario Bliznak for third all-time thanks to his goal last week. He has represented Slovakia in each of the past three World Junior championships. Saturday September 21st in Prince George marked his 100th career WHL game.

ONE-TIMERS:

On September 27th, the Vancouver Giants officially named 2000-born defenceman Alex Kannok Leipert the 17th captain in franchise history. Justin Sourdif has recorded points in six of his first seven games to start this season. The Giants have scored at least one power play goal in six of their first seven games so far this season. Milos Roman has scored goals in four of his past five games.

ALL EYES ON SOURDIF:

Fresh off a historic rookie season with the Giants, and a Silver Medal in the summer with Hockey Canada, 2002-born forward Justin Sourdif will be a player worth watching in 2019-20. Last season Sourdif scored 23 goals making him just the third 16-year-old Giant to ever surpass 20 goals in a season. In August, Sourdif helped lead Canada to a Silver Medal at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. Sourdif has been pegged by many as a top NHL Draft prospect in a stacked 2020 NHL Draft Class. He was originally selected by the Vancouver Giants with the third overall selection in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. Sourdif has registered four goals and five assists for nine points so far this season. His nine points lead the team and rank him second overall in the WHLK.
