Eric Alarie had a goal and two points, Cade Hayes scored one goal, and Brad Ginnell picked up two assists. Braden Schneider led the Wheat Kings with a goal and two points. Moose Jaw was 2-for-4 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill. 2019 – 2020 Recap… The Warriors finished last season with a record of 14-44-4, they were 9-20-1 at home and 5- 24-3 on the road. They were 6-18-1 against the East Division, 7-18-1 against the Central Division, 1-3-1 against the B.C. Division, and 0-4-1 against the U.S. Division. 2021 NHL draft eligible forward Ryder Korczak led the Warriors with 49 assists and 67 points in 62 games, import Martin Lang was second in team scoring with 43 points in 57 games, and Captain Owen Hardy led the team with 22 goals and was third in scoring with 35 points in 45 games. 20-year-old Chase Hartje had 22 points and was the team’s highest scoring defenceman, and Eric Alarie had 21 points and was the team’s highest scoring rookie. Opposition Preview… The Prince Albert Raiders won the 2019 – 2020 East Division with a record of 36-18-6-4, they were 20-6-4-2 at home and 16-12-2-2 on the road. Aliaksei Protas led the Raiders with 31 goals and 80 points, Ozzy Wiesblatt had 25 goals and 70 points, and graduating 20-year-old Brayden Watts had 29 goals and 61 points. The Raiders opened their 24-game Hub schedule on Friday with a 6-3 win over the Regina Pats. Ozzy Wiesblatt had a goal and three points, Evan Herman and Reece Vitelli had a goal and two points each, and Remy Aquilon picked up two assists. 2019 – 2020 vs. Prince Albert… Last season, the Warriors were 0-4 against the Raiders. Moose Jaw was 0-2 at home and 0-2 on the road, Prince Albert scoured the Warriors 21-8. Ryder Korczak led the Warriors with three goals and six points, and Owen Hardy and Daemon Hunt had two points each. Boston Bilous was 0-1 against his former team with a 3.06gaa and .930sv%. Aliaksei Protas led the Raiders with five goals and eight points, Ozzy Wiesblatt had six assists and seven points, Brayden Watts, Kaiden Guhle, and Spencer Moe had five points each, and Evan Herman and Ilya Usau had four points each. Carter Serhyenko was 3-0 with a 1.33gaa and .949sv%. Hunt goes Wild… Defenceman Daemon Hunt was selected in the 3rd round, 65th overall, by the Minnesota Wild at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Hunt is the first-ever Warrior drafted by the Wild. He made his professional debut with the Iowa Wild, Minnesota’s AHL affiliate, on Saturday, February 6. Krane flies to Moose Jaw… On December 15, the Warriors acquired 20-year-old forward Riley Krane from the Regina Pats in exchange for a conditional 7th round pick in 2023. Last season with Regina, Krane had 16 goals, 16 assists, 32 points, and 84 penalty minutes. NHL Players to Watch… Ryder Korczak, Eric Alarie, and Cole Jordan were all of the named to NHL Central Scouting’s “Players to Watch” for January. Korczak was given an “A” rating, while Alarie and Jordan were given “C” ratings. Moose Jaw was one of six WHL teams to have three players appear on the list. Local flavour… This season the Warriors feature three players who reside in the Friendly City. 19-year-old defenceman Nolan Jones, 17-year-old forward Atley Calvert, and 17-year-old defenceman Max Wanner. Jones and Calvert both grew up in Moose Jaw, while Wanner is originally from Estevan but moved to the city last year. Forwards Atley Calvert, Josh Hoekstra, Riley Niven, and Jagger Firkus, defencemen Lucas Brenton, Denton Mateychuk, and Max Wanner, and goaltender Brett Mirwald are in their rookie campaigns. Seven of the eight players spent time with the organization last season, Mirwald and Niven are the only players to not debut last season. Brayden Yager is making his WHL debut but is classified as an affiliated player for the East Division Hub. 2020 WHL Bantam Draft… At the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft, the Warriors selected nine players, they drafted four forwards, four defenceman, and one goaltender. They selected five players from Saskatchewan, one from Manitoba, two from Albert, and one from British Columbia. They signed the top three picks from the draft, forward Brayden Yager (1st round), forward Ben Riche (2nd round), and goaltender Jackson Unger (3rd round). Yager joins Warriors… 2020 1st round pick Brayden Yager has joined the Warriors for the duration of the 2021 WHL East Division season. Yager was selected 3rd overall at the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft. From Saskatoon, Yager played last season as an underage with the Saskatoon Contacts (SMAAAHL), in 44 games he had 18 goals, 24 assists, and 42 points. In 2018-19 playing with Martensville (SBAAL), Yager had 44 goals, 59 assists, and 103 points in 31 games. The Warriors are 9-9-1-0 so far this season and they are led by 2021 NHL Draft Eligible Ryder Korczak with 29 points (8G, 21A) in 19 games played and 2019 Anaheim Ducks draft pick Brayden Tracey with 22 points (10G, 12A) in 12 games played.     PRESENTER BIOGRAPHIES MIKE CRAIG – Lethbridge Hurricanes (November 14) Now a current assistant coach of the WHL’s Lethbridge Hurricanes, Mike had a highly decorated Junior hockey career, including winning a Memorial Cup alongside Eric Lindros with the Oshawa Generals, as well as winning a World Junior gold medal with Team Canada twice. He was also a first round draft choice, 28th overall, by the Minnesota North Stars. Mike would go on to play 423 NHL games for the North Stars, Dallas Stars, Toronto Maple Leafs and San Jose Sharks, as well as 11 seasons in Europe. FRAN GOW – Hockey Alberta (November 28 and December 5) Fran is currently a Coach Mentor in Hockey Development for Hockey Alberta, as well as the Vice President of Hockey Operations for the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Most notably, Fran is one of only three coaches in AJHL history to coach 1,000 regular season games. He achieved this great feat while coaching the Fort McMurray Oil Barons, Grande Prairie Storm, and Drayton Valley Thunder. Fran won an RBC Cup with Fort McMurray in 2000. MATT WENINGER – Hockey Alberta (December 12) Matt is currently the Consultant for Hockey Alberta’s South Regional Centre. He played minor hockey in Lethbridge before moving on to play three seasons in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He then accepted an NCAA Division I scholarship to St. Lawrence University, graduating as the school’s all-time leader in games played and saves, and was second in all- time wins and shutouts. His coaching career includes stops with Laurentian University (CIS), the University of Lethbridge (CIS), the Yorkton Terriers (SJHL), and extensive work for the Saskatchewan Hockey Association before joining Hockey Alberta.
