First there are the people who helped write the content of the book that I lived: Joe Bunting was my writing partner before he was my son-in-law. He has been a huge help in getting this book in your hands. It’s taken me four years of writing and thinking and still it needed something more - someone to help me take the manuscript the last leg to completion. And just before marrying my daughter Talia, Joe did that. I’m hoping there will be other collaborations to follow. My mom and dad lived the journeying life, having met in Yosemite on separate journeys one summer, and then when I came along, packing up for Italy for three years. Karen, saw me ricochet back from Indonesia for the wedding and has been my traveling companion ever since. She’s lived the adventures that are in these pages. Talia, Seth, Estie, Emily, and Leah started out in the back of bikes, cars, and planes, and have had their own fair share of kingdom journeys. I really began to understand the power of kingdom journey when I saw it transforming their lives. The people who have helped me along the way are too numerous to list. There is our support team – perhaps 40 of them have hung in there since the beginning. These people saw something in us we didn’t see in ourselves. And Connie Means is the one non-family supporter who has backed me since I was 17 years old. There’s a special place in heaven for saints like her. Friends like the Watsons and the Hitchcocks helped us stuff the first Adventures envelopes. Heidi Neulander and Lisa Finney believed in us first and worked in the garage with me. Rob Finney actually built that office and so much else in my life. Sue Mast, Mary Lou Laird, Ron and Darla Campbell; and Dori Beach, were all at the first staff retr eat. Bill Britton, Clint Bokelman, Scott Borg, and Joe Rogers came along not long thereafter and for some reason, haven’t left me yet. Anna-Marie Franken was originally a partner in Swaziland and then became a partner in the vision of a year-long kingdom journey. God gave her a dream that it could happen and it took a year’s mileage in my journey to get my arms around it and see God’s point. Andrew Shearman stirred up my vision for the kingdom and has loved me well. Gary Black and Tom Davis are brothers who I’m doing the journey of life with. Michael Hindes took the World Race for four years and helped prove the concepts contained in this book. Then there are those who helped me specifically on this book project: Dan Brock transcribed a lot of my writings. Emily Drevets spent a summer helping me shape the first manuscript. Ashlie Offenburg helped in the editing process. Jeff Goins has done a better job of taking my mentoring than anyone else. He has helped me shape the manuscript and get it in your hands. All rights reserved worldwide. 3 Introduction Hundreds of books talk about our faith walk as a journey, but few delve into the subject of how a physical journey can reinvent and revitalize our spiritual journey with God. If you look at Jesus, you see that he called his disciples to follow him on a physical journey, not just a spiritual one. He tramped around with them in Judea for three years, even sending them out on their own short-term mission trips without him. Everywhere that his team traveled, they talked about the kingdom – a kingdom that wasn’t of this world, but was so real. Jesus continually described it for them, comparing it to things they could see like a net, a pearl, and a treasure (in one chapter of the Bible – Matt. 13 - he used no less than seven metaphors to describe the kingdom). As we explore this subject together, I want to take you alongside some of the people who are on these journeys throughout the world discovering the Kingdom of God. As you hear their stories, let me encourage you to ask the question, “God, do you want me to do something like this? Is this where you're leading me?” God wants to take you to mountaintops of faith. To do that, he may lead you up the Himalayan Mountains in Nepal, as he did Ruth Wilson, to show you amazing views of his creation. He may call you to abandon your comfortable home, Starbucks, and Sports Center to travel from Florida to Texas on a bicycle, as he did Andrew Maas. He may want you to catch a plane to Swaziland in Africa, like Mallorie Miller did, to help a nation of AIDS victims and experience something of their pain. Or, he may want you to go to inner city Philly, like Claud Crosby, to walk with God through streets lined with drug dealers and addicts. God teaches through experience, and God may be calling you to experience a kingdom journey, a real life journey through the world that will prepare you for your lifelong journey of faith. 4 Chapter 1: My Journey “A ship in harbor is safe – but that is not what ships are for.” – John A. Shedd 1 The road was long and lonely that led from Vienna, Virginia, to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, but my heart was pounding with anticipation as I began to drive. It was the first stage in a kingdom journey that led me to Indonesia, across the world to the Dominican Republic, and back to Virginia. I ventured out in 1980, right after graduating college. I was all potential and little training. But everything began to change when I set out on my journey. I had gotten my first job – to help start a micro-credit organization in Bali. Training was held in Honduras, so I left Virginia in a yellow Chevy Vega and drove southwest through Texas, crossing the Mexican border at Matamoros. This was the adventure I yearned to live! The world was full of possibilities. The unknown loomed before me – I relished the feeling of meeting life head-on. To combat boredom, I picked up eleven hitchhikers along the way. One told me a story about his time in Borneo where he had hunted whales. One evening he was invited to a feast by a tribe of Kalimantan headhunters. They put a plate of mystery meat in front of him and he dug in… I dropped off my hitchhiking friend in New Orleans and wondered what it would be like to live in a country where head-hunting was still practiced. After a few days, I arrived – exhausted – in Chiapas, the southernmost state of Mexico. I had been driving without detour or respite, sleeping mostly in my car. I decided to take some time and enjoy the area. I ate dinner in a local restaurant and met an American. He told me about the Mayan ruins and invited me to explore with him. The next day we hiked jungle trails and saw the ruins of Palenque. The heat was intense and we cooled off by sitting beneath the beautifully blue, cascading waterfalls. I couldn’t believe how lush and verdant everything was. It was a scene from National Geographic. As I reflect back on it now, I can see that while it was adventure that got me on the road, there was a price to pay as I went further down it. I didn’t know what I didn’t know. The world and its pain had barely touched my spirit. My days were organized to meet my personal needs. In time, my priorities would be readjusted, but only as I encountered the painful parts of my kingdom journey. It took me seven days to get to Honduras; I almost didn’t make it. The Vega ’s engine was barely running on two cylinders by the time I sputtered into Tegucigalpa well after midnight. The first leg of the trip was over. Two years later, God led me to begin a ministry. Over the next three years, I traveled to Indonesia, flew to Chicago, got married, returned to Indonesia for a year, spent two years in the Caribbean, and then enrolled in business school in Virginia. Since then, I’ve experienced the vicarious thrill of launching young people into the adventures God prepared for them. Often, they look like variations of my own journeys. Twenty-seven years later I was back in Chiapas. I was there with a group of fifty twenty- somethings, my own daughter among them. I could see the thrill of adventure in their eyes – a distant echo of what I felt on my own journey.

However, if this is the case, how do we approach costume in a television show like Sex and the City (1998-2004), which we know (via press articles and various other extra-textual materials) to be comprised of designer clothes? Once onscreen, are the clothes in Sex and the City to be interpreted as „costume‟, rather than „fashion‟? To be sure, it is important to tease out precise definitions of key terms, but to position fashion as the antithesis of costume is reductive. Landis‟ claim is based on the assumption that the purpose of costume is to tell a story. She thereby neglects to acknowledge that the audience may read certain costumes as fashion - which exists in a framework of discourses that can be located beyond the text. This is particularly relevant with regard to contemporary US television which, according to press reports, has witnessed an emergence of „fashion programming‟ - fictional programming with a narrative focus on fashion.

Betty Suarez lands her first job as a journalist with Meade Publications at MODE magazine. She is hired as the assistant to the editor-in-chief. It is an adjustment for Suarez to join the team at MODE because she is not fashion savvy and does even wear makeup or style her hair. This story is a basic fish-out-of-water tale that throws a young hopeful into the world of a fast-paced fashion magazine. 2) “The Box and the Bunny” aired October 5, 2006. Suarez loses “the book,” a mockup of the latest issue of the magazine that contains untouched-up pictures of an actress. She has to find “the book” before the pictures can be leaked to other media. Wilhelmina Slater plots to steal the job of editor-in-chief and Bradford Meade investigates the murder of Fey Sommers, former editor-in-chief. 3) “Queens for a Day” aired October 12, 2006. Suarez has a connection with a famous photographer, Vincent Bianchi, because the two are from Queens. He has vowed never to work with Meade Publications again after a bad incident in the past. Suarez gets a makeover to try to fit in at MODE, but realizes that she is really appreciated for being the person that she is. Bianchi does the shoot for MODE. Bradford Meade still investigating Sommers’ murder. 4) “Fey’s Sleigh Ride” aired October 19, 2006.

There are only about two hundred kouroi in existence, and most have been recovered badly damaged or in fragments from grave sites or archeological digs. But this one was almost perfectly preserved. It stood close to seven feet tall. It had a kind of light-colored glow that set it apart from other ancient works. It was an extraordinary find. Becchina’s asking price was just under $10 million. The Getty moved cautiously. It took the kouros on loan and began a thorough investigation. Was the statue consistent with other known kouroi? The answer appeared to be yes. The style of the sculpture seemed reminiscent of the Anavyssos kouros in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, meaning that it seemed to fit with a particular time and place. Where and when had the statue been found? No one knew precisely, but Becchina gave the Getty’s legal department a sheaf of documents relating to its more recent history.

    國立臺灣師範大學英語學系 碩 士 論 文 Master’s Thesis Department of English National Taiwan Normal University 美國影集的字彙涵蓋量 語料庫分析 The Vocabulary Coverage in American Television Programs A Corpus-Based Study 指導教授:陳 浩 然 Advisor: Dr. Hao-Jan Chen 研 究 生:周 揚 亭 Yang-Ting Chou 中 華 民 國一百零三年七月 July, 2014 國 立 英 臺 語 灣 師 學 範 系 大 學 103 碩 士 論 文 美 國 影 集 的 字 彙 涵 蓋 量 語 料 庫 分 析 周 揚 亭 中文摘要 身在英語被視為外國語文的環境中,英語學習者很難擁有豐富的目標語言環 境。電視影集因結合語言閱讀與聽力,對英語學習者來說是一種充滿動機的學習 資源,然而少有研究將電視影集視為道地的語言學習教材。許多研究指出媒體素 材有很大的潛力能激發字彙學習,研究者很好奇學習者要學習多少字彙量才能理 解電視影集的內容。 本研究探討理解道地的美國電視影集需要多少字彙涵蓋量 (vocabulary coverage)。研究主要目的為:(1)探討為理解 95%和 98%的美國影集,分別需要 英國國家語料庫彙編而成的字族表(the BNC word lists)和匯編英國國家語料庫 (BNC)與美國當代英語語料庫(COCA)的字族表多少的字彙量;(2)探討為理解 95%和 98%的美國影集,不同的電視影集類型需要的字彙量;(3)分析出現在美國 影集卻未列在字族表的字彙,並比較兩個字族表(the BNC word lists and the BNC/COCA word lists)的異同。 研究者蒐集六十部美國影集,包含 7,279 集,31,323,019 字,並運用 Range 分析理解美國影集需要分別兩個字族表的字彙量。透過語料庫的分析,本研究進 一步比較兩個字族表在美國影集字彙涵蓋量的異同。 研究結果顯示,加上專有名詞(proper nouns)和邊際詞彙(marginal words),英 國國家語料庫字族表需 2,000 至 7,000 字族(word family),以達到 95%的字彙涵 蓋量;至於英國國家語料庫加上美國當代英語語料庫則需 2,000 至 6,000 字族。 i 若須達到 98%的字彙涵蓋量,兩個字族表都需要 5,000 以上的字族。 第二,有研究表示,適當的文本理解需要 95%的字彙涵蓋量 (Laufer, 1989; Rodgers & Webb, 2011; Webb, 2010a, 2010b, 2010c; Webb & Rodgers, 2010a, 2010b),為達 95%的字彙涵蓋量,本研究指出連續劇情類(serial drama)和連續超 自然劇情類(serial supernatural drama)需要的字彙量最少;程序類(procedurals)和連 續醫學劇情類(serial medical drama)最具有挑戰性,因為所需的字彙量最多;而情 境喜劇(sitcoms)所需的字彙量差異最大。 第三,美國影集內出現卻未列在字族表的字會大致上可分為四種:(1)專有 名詞;(2)邊際詞彙;(3)顯而易見的混合字(compounds);(4)縮寫。這兩個字族表 基本上包含完整的字彙,但是本研究顯示語言字彙不斷的更新,新的造字像是臉 書(Facebook)並沒有被列在字族表。 本研究也整理出兩個字族表在美國影集字彙涵蓋量的異同。為達 95%字彙涵 蓋量,英國國家語料庫的 4,000 字族加上專有名詞和邊際詞彙的知識才足夠;而 英國國家語料庫合併美國當代英語語料庫加上專有名詞和邊際詞彙的知識只需 3,000 字族即可達到 95%字彙涵蓋量。另外,為達 98%字彙涵蓋量,兩個語料庫 合併的字族表加上專有名詞和邊際詞彙的知識需要 10,000 字族;英國國家語料 庫字族表則無法提供足以理解 98%美國影集的字彙量。 本研究結果顯示,為了能夠適當的理解美國影集內容,3,000 字族加上專有 名詞和邊際詞彙的知識是必要的。字彙涵蓋量為理解美國影集的重要指標之一, ii 而且字彙涵蓋量能協助挑選適合學習者的教材,以達到更有效的電視影集語言教 學。 關鍵字:字彙涵蓋量、語料庫分析、第二語言字彙學習、美國電視影集 iii ABSTRACT In EFL context, learners of English are hardly exposed to ample language input.

    EDITORS’ COMMENTARY Lived Experiences and Cultural Practices Tiffany Ana López and Josie Méndez-Negrete Life paths encompass the spectacles, rituals, performances, and experiences that inform the ways we carve the material spaces and affective places comprising our lives. The works brought together in this volume stage a conversation about the range of life paths encountered by Chicanas and Latinas: paths that have been set before us, paths we chose for ourselves, worn paths we blindly follow, new paths given to us by others who have forged the way, as well as the many paths we have had to fiercely blaze or reconstruct. The trajectory of the works in this issue address a spectrum of life paths spanning from the representational realm of popular culture to the experiential realms of family, work, and school. Tanya González’ essay, “Is Ugly the New Sexy? Dilemmas of Latina Sexuality on Ugly Betty,” presents a critical reading of the Ugly Betty television series crafted for American audiences. Her essay focuses on the show’s complex representation of Betty as a sexual subject and active agent in the forging of her own life paths. González sees the series as marking an important shift in representations of Latinas within dominant visual media, especially regarding its portrayal of Latina sexuality not as a totalizing factor of identity performance (that is, a replication of historically stereotypic images of the Latin spitfire) but as an integral component of Latina subjectivity. González reads Betty as illustrative of new mestiza consciousness in action, “a rare example of a complex, intelligent, feminist, professional, and sexual Latina subject.” She also critically spotlights Ugly Betty for the ways it offers a most empowering message for Latinas about how to “put yourself first while still loving those around you.” 14 CHICANA/LATINA STUDIES 9:2 SPRING 2010 EDITORS’ COMMENTARY Adelina Anthony’s Bruising for Besos furthers discussion about matters of representation, sexuality, and Latina subjectivity.
