Memphis University School, a non-denominational and non-discriminatory college- preparatory day school for boys in Grades 7-12, ofers a diverse and engaging curriculum that balances academics, athletics, and the arts in a culture that emphasizes integrity, honor, and strength of character. The student-faculty ratio is 8:1, and typical class size is 15.
FACULTY The faculty challenges, inspires, and nurtures growing minds. More than 74 percent of our teachers hold a master’s degree or Ph.D., and they average more than two decades of teaching experience.
HISTORY The original MUS was founded in 1893 and closed in 1936 during the Great Depression. The present school was chartered in 1954 and opened for operation in 1955.
HONOR CODE The student-run Honor Council helps maintain the school’s motto, Veritas Honorque – Truth and Honor – and does not tolerate lying, cheating, or stealing.
NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED HONORS Fifteen seniors were named National Merit Semifnalists in 2015-16. These students together with the school’s 13 National Merit Commended Students made up 26 percent of the Class of 2016.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES MUS ofers its students numerous extracurricular activities in government, publi- cations, music, theater, speech, athletics, art, honor societies, and more than 30 clubs of popular interest. Our students tutor children, donate blood, volunteer time, and raise money for many nonproft organizations. Boys also have the op- portunity to enhance their educational experience with travel-abroad programs in Europe and Central America.

AP COURSES Students may choose from 21 Advanced Placement courses for possible college credit. Historically, more than 90 percent of our students score a 3 or above on AP exams.
COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS The Class of 2016 was accepted to 112 schools in 32 states, as well as Washington, DC. Seventy-four students in the class reported receiving 290 scholarship ofers totaling about $12.3 million.
CO-EDGE MUS has a coordinate program with the all-girls Hutchison School. The adjacent campus allows for joint academics, athletics, civic service, and leadership programs and activities.
COLLEGE TESTING During the previous fve years, the mid-range SAT and ACT composite scores for our students have been about 30 percent above the national average.
COUNSELING SERVICES The Kemmons Wilson Leadership Development and Counseling Center promotes learning and facilitates the intellectual and emotional development of our students. The counseling staf advises student organizations, administers parent and student education programs, and addresses student concerns through personal guidance.

Baseball John Jarnagin, Head Coach A native of San Diego, California, Jarnagin is a five-time Coach of the Year recipient with more than thirty years of coaching experience. Before com- ing to MUS in 2014, he had begun the baseball program at Victory Uni- versity in 2013, and he led Victory to a fourth-place finish in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Small College World Series. Jarna- gin served as the head baseball coach at Morehead State University in Kentucky from 1996-2007 and University of Montevallo in Alabama from 2008-2010. Prior to Morehead State, Jarnagin had been the head baseball coach at Shelby State Community College, now Southwest Tennessee Community College, and he was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2004 as the winningest baseball coach in its history. In 1992 he was named the Co-Coach of the Year for the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association. He received four other Coach-of-the-Year hon- ors while at the helm of the Shelby State program, and he has coached eight players that were se- lected for the Major League Draft. He is assisted by Murphy Appling, Johnny Beard, Kyle Finney, Bo Hart, and Chris Stewart.
Basketball Matt Bakke, Head Coach Bakke took the helm as head coach of the varsity basketball team in 2012-13, and in 2014 his team was runner-up for the state champi- onship. He came to MUS in the fall of 1999 and served thirteen years as assistant basketball coach under legendary Head Coach Jerry Peters. The program has a long history of district and regional cham- pionships and state-tournament play, and in 2007 the Owls captured the state title. Through the years Bakke has taken on multiple roles, including coach of the Lower School cross-country and track teams. He currently chairs the physical-education department and is director of the Jerry Peters Memphis Summer Classic. For his dedicated service to MUS, he received the Distinguished Teaching Award in 2011. Prior to his arrival at MUS, Bakke had coached at both Millington Central High School and Rhodes College. A grad- uate of White Station, he played at Rhodes College and Southwest Tennessee Community College, where he is a member of the Saluqis Athletic Hall of Fame. Bakke is assisted by Trey Suddarth and Jerry Dover.
Bowling Dr. David Jackson, Head Coach Jackson, who has coached MUS bowling since its inception as a varsity sport in 2008, first came to MUS in 1974 and stayed for eight years while serving as chairman of the religion department. He left in 1982 to pastor a church, and for the next twenty-three years led congregations in Jackson, Mississippi, and Knoxville, Tennessee. He returned to MUS in 2005, and he currently holds the Robert J. Hussey, Sr., Chair of Religion. Jackson and Assistant Coach Jenny Pratt, instructor in Span- ish, have both attained bronze certification with the United States Bowling Congress, an intermediate level of training and certification designed to increase coaching skills.

Cross Country Joe Tyler, Head Coach Before coming to MUS in 1999, Tyler had been an assistant cross-country coach at Christian Brothers High School and Houston High School. He grew up in Kansas City, Missouri; graduated from Creighton University; and obtained a master’s degree from the University of Memphis. He arrived at MUS in 1999 to teach mathematics in Lower School, and he has as- sisted in coaching basketball and track. He now serves as the assistant principal in the Lower School in addi- tion to his teaching and coaching duties. In 2005 and 2014, his cross-country squads took second place in the state meet. Tyler was named The Commercial Appeal’s Coach of the Year in cross country in 2012 and 2013. He is assisted by Jonas Holdeman, instructor in English, and Meredith McFarlin, instructor in mathematics.
Fencing Brad Kroeker, Head Coach Under Kroeker’s direction, fencing started as a club sport at MUS in 2005 and grew in popularity to become the fourteenth varsity sport in 2009. The Owls have competed in the Junior Olympics in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Charlotte, North Carolina; Dallas, Texas; Denver, Colorado; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Memphis, as well as in national championships in Atlanta, Georgia, and Reno, Nevada. In the Tennessee State Secondary School Fencing Championships, the Owls won state epee titles in 2008, 2010, and 2012-14; saber titles from 2008-16; and the foil title in 2015. And in 2015, Coach Kroeker’s team won its fourth consec- utive overall state title. Before coming to MUS, Kroeker had worked two years with M. Bella Walther of the Hungarian national saber team and two years with Sergey Petrosyan of the Russian/Armenia junior foil team. Kroeker then coached and taught fencing classes at Rhodes College from 1999-2004. During this time his fencers won many awards, including state individual championships in foil, epee, and saber; regional and local tournament medals; and National Fencing All-Academic-Team selections. Kroeker is assisted by Steve Dobbs, Mike Harber, and Petrosyan.
Golf Cliff Frisby, Head Coach Frisby, a thirty-six-year member of the Professional Golf Association, has been the director of the United States Junior Golf Tour since 2001. This year is his eighth as head coach of the MUS varsity golf team. In 2013 Frisby fielded a competitive group that won the Division II-AA state championship. The Owls repeated that feat in 2014, win- ning a second consecutive state title by eleven strokes. In 2014 The Commercial Appeal named Frisby Best of the Preps Golf Coach of the Year. Since 1976 the golf program has amassed six state team championships and seven runner-up finishes.

Lacrosse Elliott Dent, Head Coach Lacrosse started as a club sport at MUS in 1990 and became the tenth varsity sport in 1995. In 1996 Dent came fresh from college-level lacrosse at Hampden- Sydney College to teach English and religion and to become head coach of the varsity lacrosse team. The Owls won their first Tennessee Scholastic Lacrosse Association (TSLA) championship in 1990, and Dent’s squads have added eleven more state titles, including winning the 2016 championship. Dent has been named The Commercial Appeal’s Best of the Preps Coach of the Year seven times. During Dent’s tenure the team has beaten squads from California, Connecti- cut, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and others. Dent was named the TSLA Coach of the Year in 1999 and was the president of the TSLA from 1999-2004. In 2002 he was the coach for the West All-Star Team in the United States Lacrosse High School All-Star Games. Under his leadership the MUS summer lacrosse camp has introduced many boys to the game. Dent is assisted by Whit Tenent ’00, instructor in history; and Buck Towner ’07, assistant director of admissions.
Soccer Vincent Beck, Head Coach Beck, who teaches Honors Geology and Earth Science, has been the head coach of the MUS soccer team since 1997. In 1998 he led the team to the state quarterfinals and has reached the state tournament every year since. He has also led some championship squads, including the 1999 team, which went undefeated in the region, and the 2003 team, which reached the state- final game, losing in double overtime. His 2004 squad won the state title, de- feating University School of Nashville, 2-0, in the championship match. Beck grew up in Scotland and studied at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where he was a three-year starter in soccer and two-year captain, and he earned a bachelor’s degree in geology with emphases in oceanography and geography. He played professional indoor/outdoor soccer for twelve years with teams from Memphis; Wichita, Kansas; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Cincinnati, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a three-time All-Star and served as a player-assistant coach for two years. He also played for two years with the Memphis Express in the Professional Development League in the early 2000’s. Earlier in his career, Beck coached high-school boys and girls teams, including a boys’ team in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that won the 1991 state championship. The Commercial Appeal named Beck the Soccer Coach of the Year in 2004. He is assisted by Billy Smith, director of information technology.
Swimming Bryan Parker, Head Coach The swimming program was resurrected at MUS in 1999 after having been dor- mant since the 1930’s. Now the Aquatic Owls are the largest men’s swim team in the conference, with the squad averaging more than thirty swimmers per sea- son. The 2012 season was the first for Parker as varsity head coach. Parker came to MUS with more than ten years of coaching experience, and for his ef- forts he was named The Commercial Appeal’s Best of the Preps Coach of the Year the past five years, 2012-16. During his tenure MUS has won the last eight Shelby County championships, been state runner-up twice, and captured the state championship in 2016. 11 MUS-M.qxp_Insides 7/29/16 9:39 AM Page 12

Tennis Bill Taylor, Head Coach The tennis program under Taylor continues as one of the dominant sports programs in Tennessee high-school athletics. Now in his forty- first season with the Owls, Taylor has coached his teams to fourteen state titles and claimed the runner-up spot eight times. His players have claimed sixteen state doubles titles and ten singles champi- onships. Taylor has been named Tennis Coach of the Year by The Commercial Appeal fourteen times. In college Taylor played tennis for Southwestern (now Rhodes College). He is assisted by Phil Chamberlain, director of the Dunavant-Wellford Tennis Center. In ad- dition to coaching, Taylor also teaches biology and Advanced Placement Biology, and he directs the MUS in Europe summer program. He currently holds the Ruth McCaughan Morrison Chair of Science.
Track & Field Bobby Alston, Head Coach Alston starts his thirty-second season this year as track-and-field head coach. Coaches assisting Alston at the varsity level are Jonas Holdeman, Johnny Jones, Orlando McKay, Glenn Rogers, Ross Rut- ledge ’02, Joe Tyler, and Dave Ferebee. While he has been head coach, MUS track teams have won twenty-five regional championships, had five state runner-up finishes, and were state champions in 1994, 1995, 1997, 2009, and 2014 (Team Relay Champions in 1993 and 1994). He has coached indi- vidual state champions in eighteen of the nineteen contested events. He was named the TACA-NHSACA State Coach of the Year in 1991. In 2014 he was selected to receive the NFHS State and South Sectional Coach of the Year Award. He has been recognized multiple times by The Commercial Appeal as Track and Field Coach of the Year. Alston is also director of athletics and head football coach. (For more on Alston, see page 20.)
Trapshooting Hamilton Eggers ’94, Head Coach Begun as a club sport in 2005 by Patrick McCarroll ’92, trapshooting has grown into a popular spring sport. In 2008 the program became the school’s twelfth var- sity sport. Eggers, an instructor in history and assistant football coach, inherited a sound program when he took the reins from McCarroll in 2009. Under the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP), the team competes against public and independent schools in several regular-season shoots in preparation for the post- season. Teams of five athletes shoot at clay targets released from a central trap house. The trapshooting program’s goals parallel the mission of the Tennessee SCTP: to teach the importance of safe firearms handling, responsibility, leader- ship, and teamwork, and to promote healthy competition. Eggers is assisted by Jonathan Large, holder of the Ross McCain Lynn Chair of History. (For more on Eggers, see page 20.)

Wrestling Steve Hendricks, Head Coach Hendricks began his career in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, as an assistant coach at Southeast Missouri State University. He also coached at Millington High School from 1975-1991, es- tablishing a team record of 168-48-3. After several years in administration with Shelby County Schools, he transferred to Bolton High School. From 1998-2003 his duties included coaching wrestling, and his teams established a record of 78- 22. After retirement from Shelby County Schools, he began coaching as an assistant at MUS with both the Lower School and Upper School teams. This fall Hendricks starts his eighth year as varsity head coach. He is assisted by James Walker, head coach of the Lower School team; and Jonathan Jones, chair of the Department of History and Social Studies.
