  • Sparrow Records Discography
Sparrow Discography by Mike Callahan, David Edwards & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Sparrow Records Discography Sparrow is a Contemporary Christian label founded in 1976 by Billy Ray Hearn. Hearn was the A&R Director for Word Records’ Myrrh label, founded a few years earlier also as a Contemporary Christian label. Sparrow also released records under their Birdwing subsidiary. Hearn’s Sparrow label was in competition with Hearn’s old boss, Word Records, and was quite successful. Even today, Sparrow is among the top Christian labels. Hearn sold the label to EMI in 1992, and it was placed under the Capitol Christian Music Group. Sparrow signed a distribution agreement with MCA in April, 1981 to release their product in the secular market while the regular Sparrow issues were distributed to Christian stores and Christian radio stations. The arrangement with MCA lasted until October, 1986, when Sparrow switched distribution to Capitol. • LARRY NORMAN, JESUS ROCK, and an INTERVIEW with GREGORY ALAN THORNBURY Rupert Loydell Falmouth Univ
WEIRD RELIGIOUS BACKGROUNDS: LARRY NORMAN, JESUS ROCK, AND AN INTERVIEW WITH GREGORY ALAN THORNBURY Rupert Loydell Falmouth University Keywords: Christianity, Larry Norman, Jesus Rock, CCM, Religion 'Christian rock is a genre that exists to edify and make money off evangelical Christians. [...] A Christian band , on the other hand is just a band that has more than one Christian in it.' – John Jeremiah Sullivan (2012: 17-18) Although The Bloomsbury Handbook of Religion and Popular Music (Stewart and Abraham 2017) contains chapters such as Michael J. Gilmour's 'The Bible and Popular Music' (67-76) and Ibrahim Abraham and Francis Stewarts' 'Punk and Hardcore' (241- 250), there remains little informed academic consideration of the Christian music genre, especially punk and post-punk. John J. Thompson's Raised by Wolves (2000) and Mark Joseph's The Rock & Roll Rebellion (1999) offer insider histories, whilst Andrew Beaujon's Body Piercing Saved My Life (2006) is an hilarious, sceptical exploration of 'the phenomenon of Christian rock', focussed mostly on the early 2000s. Gilmour 's Call Me the Seeker: Listening to Religion in Popular Music (2005) is interested more in religious sources and themes; the nearest it gets to post-punk is Anna Kessler's consideration of Nick Cave (79-94) and J.R.C. Cousland's discussion of 'God, the Bad, and the Ugly' in the work of Nick Cave and Polly Harvey (129-157). Better, is Jay R Howard & John M. Streck's Apostle of Rock (1999), which takes a more sociological approach to what it calls 'The Splintered World of Contemporary Christian Music' and considers the tensions between ideas of ministry, entertainment, art and business for Christian musicians.

  • Recommended Ccm Artists & Bands of a Specific Musical
RECOMMENDED CHRISTIAN-LABEL ARTISTS & BANDS OF A SPECIFIC MUSICAL GENRE In compiling this list I realize that some artists/bands mainly perform one particular style of music and other artists perform across several musical styles or genres. I have therefore endeavored to be as specific as possible and name particular albums of the artist/band that, in my view, are outstanding in a particular musical genre. NB. ‘v.s.’ stands for ‘vocal similarities’ ‘m.s.’ stands for ‘musical similarities’ Adult Contemporary/Pop Bob Carlisle – what a voice! John Elefante – brilliant vocalist (formerly with Kansas) Jon Gibson – the closest CCM gets to Stevie Wonder (‘Body & Soul’ & ‘Love Education’ CDs highly recommended) Amy Grant – esp. her ‘Lead Me On’ & ‘Behind The Eyes’ CD’s Paul Q-Pek: ‘Touch The Ground’ CD (v.s. to Peter Gabriel at times) Connie Scott: ‘Live To Tell’ (her strongest effort) Michael W. Smith: esp. his ‘The Big Picture’ CD (his magnum opus – contains great keyboard work) Out Of The Grey – quality ‘art pop’ if there is such a genre (great female vocals and guitar work) 2nd Chapter Of Acts – the pioneer of multi-vocal groups (they harmonized well without sounding ‘sugary/syrupy’) Sheila Walsh – esp. her ‘Shadowlands’ CD (excellent) Roma Waterman – she possesses the voice range of England’s Kate Bush (with v.s. at times); one of Australia’s best female vocalists Alternative/Indie/Modern Rock Adam Again – anything by them, but esp. their ‘Homeboys’ CD ApologetiX: ‘Ticked’ CD (a brilliant re-working [parodies] of well-known mainstream alternative/indie songs) Battered Fish – esp. the ‘Modern’ CD (brilliant!) The Choir – anything by them (‘Chase The Kangaroo’ & ‘Circle Slide’ CD’s are absolute alternative gems) Dear Ephesus: ‘The Absent Sounds Of Me’ CD (brilliant emo!) Dumpster: ‘See Through Me’ & ‘sky-fi’ CD’s Henrys, The: ‘She’s My Hallelujah’ EP (brilliant and oh-so-laid-back, leaving you wanting for more) Michael Knott – esp.
