H o at the Newport Marriott Hotel & Spa o n overlooking the Pacific Ocean in n Newport Beach, California. Hosted by Holy Cross Melkite-Greek Catholic Parish in Placentia in Orange County, par - ticipants had the opportunity to discover our church’s origin in what was once an important trade city in on the Silk Road. It was there that the church found - ed by St. Peter with the assistance of St. Barnabas began to make inroads with the Greek citizens there. Barnabas sought the assistance of St. Paul and he spent nearly a year creating the first non-Jewish Christian Church in the world. In the first plenary session, His Excellency, Bishop Nicholas, skillfully wove together the early history of our church leading up to the time in the 5th century where due to innovative doc - trines the Orthodox Catholic Christians were given the name “Melkite”. The Very Reverend Archpriest Michel Najim, Dean of the St. Nicholas Antiochian Cathedral in Los Angeles proffered a detailed and expansive explanation of the impact early heresies had on our church, the collapse of the City of Antioch due to earthquakes and the relocation of the Silk Road ending with how the Church of Antioch adjusted to the growth and development of Islam. Finally, Fr. Justin Rose, Administrator of St. Philip Melkite Mission in San Bernardino brought us from the tragic schism of 1724 which split the Orthodox Catholic Church into two camps up to our current era and what this venerable and ancient church must do to move into the 21st Century. His Excellency, Bishop Nicholas gave the keynote address wherein he shared with convention goers a vision for our church.
