VILLAGE NEWS

Edition 37 June 2018 Highways Agency News

Note from the Editor Before we go onto the news from our community, I have included informaon from the Highways Agency about Hardwater Bridge for those who have not seen this report, as it effects many people in the village. I have been in contact with Chris Davies and Barry Graves who are lobbying hard to try to expedite the work. They have also asked that consideraon be given to how traffic can be managed, as the present system can cause problems for road users and pedestrians alike. They will keep us abreast of any developments.

Hardwater Bridge is a mul-span masonry structure carrying the Hardwater Road over the between Great Doddington and Wollaston.

On the 22nd May 2018 the bridge was struck by an errant vehicle causing significant damage to the West parapet. The impact damage has also affected the cutwater, wingwall, headwalls and arch soffit the repair of which will need to be addressed as part of the scheme.

The Environment Agency were informed and specialist spillage environmental contractors aended the scene to assist as a limited quanty of oil from the engine sump of the vehicle was lost into the watercourse. All the other vehicle tanks were intact upon recovery We are pursuing a claim for the costs of the damage caused through our insurance team.

Immediate Acon

Following noficaon of the incident Highways assessed the possibility of installing barriers and traffic lights to keep the road open.

2 Scheme Preparaon

The project will consist of the complete replacement of the west parapet, rebuilding of the cutwater and repairs to the arch soffits with scour repairs east of the structure Addional works to the approach railings/fence will also be completed alongside vegetaon removal, which can only be carried out when there is no risk of disturbance to nesng birds or animals. The road over the structure is parcularly narrow at this point; under normal operaon traffic flows via ‘give and take’ system.

In order to protect the damaged area on the west side of the bridge and to prevent any other errant vehicles from entering into the River Nene the barriers would need to be of a high containment.

Due to the size of these barriers, we would not be able to provide sufficient carriageway width to enable the road to open, even to cars only.

As part of the scheme preparaon works there are a number of consents / surveys / approvals that are required, parcularly as the bridge is over the River Nene and adjacent to a SSSI (Site of Special Scienfic Interest)

An Environmental assessment including ecological constraints appraisal and survey is required before any works can commence. Depending on the me of year, the survey can take 1-2 months and will look for evidence of protected species within the vicinity of the bridge. Should evidence be found then further studies/migaon works could be required. Environment Agency Consent is required for the structure, as we are working over a Main River, the EA have 2 months from receipt of our applicaon to approve our proposals.

Temporary works design and approval.

Subject to the consents/approvals process going smoothly the esmated start on site date is January / February 2019 3 Traffic Management / diversion The operaonal area team will inspect the diversion route and keep it safe for the duraon of the closure.

General Damage caused by poor/careless driving is having a significant impact on bridges within Northamptonshire. At present we have 11 major vehicular impact damage schemes, (including Hardwater Bridge) plus 16 minor guard-rail repairs, damage again caused by vehicular impact.

Added to which we have the ongoing bridge maintenance programme to help to prevent the bridges deteriorang further. Whilst the impact damage is priorised over the bridge maintenance programme, it is sll important to carry on with maintenance work. Addionally, all this is being undertaken with very limited resources.

We are aware that the bridge provides an important access between Great Doddington and Wollaston to the A45, so we are expeding the works as much as is possible.

We will keep all affected pares informed as the scheme progresses. [email protected] Tel:01604 883400

8 NEWS FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL CHAIRMAN

As I write this article, the hanging basket rota has just been delivered and the village cricket team has just won its first match, so summer must soon be upon us.

Budget

The PC took the decision to keep the budget unchanged meaning there was no increase in our element of the Council Tax.

Street Lighting

The ongoing replacement of lights within the village has been completed. We are starting to see the benefits of the new energy efficient lamps in the form of reduced bills as well as having brighter lights. We are now starting to focus on the replacement of the lamp post columns. If you wish to report a light not working then please contact the Parish Clerk.

Speeding

The ongoing problem continues, as always can I ask that you all lead by example when driving through the village.

Potholes

The state of the roads is a growing problem across the county. We continue to ask for the potholes to be fixed in the village via Street Doctor.

Potential Residential Development

No news is good news with no further contact re the speculative Development on Road.

We continue to focus on the need to protect the open spaces we have in the village.

9 Crime

The last six months has been relatively crime free with very little to discuss when we come to this agenda item in the meetings.

Crematorium

The Parish Council continues to monitor the impact of cars coming through the village. At present the impact appears to be minimal.

Wellingborough Prison

We have a watching brief with regards to this development and it is a standard agenda item

Hardwater Bridge

An update is included in this issue. The Parish Council will ask for updates on a regular basis.

Events

May Day

Thank you to all those people who organised and supported the May Day celebrations. The weather was very kind, the dancing and parade was superb and a joy to watch. Not sure about the stocks though! A bigger donation to village funds may be needed if I have to face such enthusiastic sponge throwing again.

Village Spring Clean

Thank you to all those people who turned up for litter picking in the village. I was pleasantly surprised how little litter there was especially after the Waendel Walk. We still managed 20 sacks of rubbish, so job done.

Special mention to Novah Clifford for her ongoing litter picks.

10 Scarecrow Committee

What a superb group of people. Your hard work, energy and enthusiasm is really appreciated. Planning for the Duck Race and Village Ball is well underway. Based on the amount of alcohol consumed at the last meeting we are in for a couple of cracking events.

121 THE RIDGE, GT DODDINGTON WELLINGBOROUGH COUNCIL MATTERS

Local Government reorganisation

Following an inspection of the governance of Northamptonshire County Council it was recommended that the council be abolished and replaced by two new unitary authorities.

Chief executives and council leaders of each of the seven districts and the county council have been invited to submit a joint proposal for a new method of service delivery. This submission will be made by the end of August.

There seems to be agreement across the county that one of these new authorities would comprise the Districts of Corby, Kettering, Wellingborough and East Northants. The other would cover Northampton, Daventry and South Northants. It is proposed that both of these new authorities will take over the service delivery of the county council.

The target date for this transformation is May 2020. In the meantime the control of the county council is being managed by two Inspectors appointed by the government. Elections to the two new unitaries will take place in May 2020.

As a result of this action the Borough Council of Wellingborough, along with the other six Districts, will be abolished. Wellingborough will be replaced by a Town Council. The elections to the borough council in May 2019 will be cancelled.

Once the submission has been approved by the government there will be wide consultation among all stakeholders and members of the public.

13 Housing Options Services Delivery

There has been a significant increase in the need for temporary housing which has seen over £700,00 extra added to the council’s operating budget. The main costs centre around the need to provide temporary emergency housing and the use of bed and breakfast establishments. due to a 38% increase in homeless applications (286) and a 66% increase in homeless acceptances (201) This is having a detrimental impact on the council’s reserves and there is a need to reduce these costs and to identify long term solutions on the provision of housing. The council is currently looking for premises that could be adapted for homeless families, to undertake joint working with outside social housing providers and to consider ways of preventing homeless at source by providing advice and guidance to families who are experiencing difficulties.

World War I Centenary

Several events are being planned to celebrate the centenary of the end of World War I. In recognition of the towns only holder of the Victoria Cross, Major Edward (Mick) Mannock, the land used by the 378 Mannock Squadron of the Air Training Corps will be handed over to them at a Mick Mannock Afternoon Tea reception on 26 July between 5 and 7pm. A memorial plaque to Major Mannock will be placed in Swanspool Gardens and unveiled by the Mayor. There will also be a Veterens Memorial service at Nene Valley crematorium on Saturday 14 July at 2.00 pm. A timetable of all the events and celebrations will be posted on the Borough Council website.

The new Mayor of Wellingborough Councillor Malcom Ward was elected on 22 May as the new Mayor of Wellingborough for the municipal year 2018-19, Malcom has represented since 2003. If you would like to invite the Mayor to attend any function in the village a request can be made to the Mayor’s secretary on 01933 231519.

14 Townscape Heritage Initiative The council secured a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund in April 2012 and they added a further £707,000 to provide a total of £2,132,100. An agreed list of buildings and shop fronts that would benefit from the fund included The Hind Hotel, The Bakehouse on Broad Green and Queens Hall, High Street. Due to certain delays around ownership of some properties the deadline for completion of the works has been extended until 31 October 2019. Work at Queens Hall is currently underway and substantial renovation work is due to start soon on the Hind Hotel. Tresham College Tresham has entered into a partnership arrangement with Bedford College which will enable them to continue to provided further education opportunities. The current site in Church Street is being refurbished and Croyland Hall will be adapted to provide additional space for students.

Wellingborough’s Party Weekend The Party Weekend will take place on 7 – 8 July in Croyland park between 12.00 and 18.00. The celebrations begin with the annual Carnival Parade which starts at Broad Green on Saturday 7 July at 1.00pm and finishes in Croyland Park. The Party in the Park starts in Croyland Park at 12 noon and will feature local performers, tribute bands a fun fair, food stalls & a licensed bar. Entrance on both days is free Further details will appear on the BCW website www.wellingborough.gov.uk

MAY DAY FESTIVAL

FRIENDS OF GREAT DODDINGTON PARK want to thank everybody who helped to make our second May Day event really fantasc! The weather was amazing as was the support from all the people who aended on the day and the volunteers who helped to make it a huge success. Special thanks to all the commiee members who always work relessly to organise such events, to David Smith whose compering skills are second to none, the Northamptonshire Morris Men who really bring the spirit of May Day to life along with the school children who danced beaufully, the Heritage Group for May Days Past, (we loved the picture of Sally Kerlin and Peggy Arch), The Bifrost Guards for the archery, Kris and Mark from Wilby and Great Doddington scout group for manning the bouncy castle, the WI for serving all the teas and cakes on the day and The Piazza Wheel for the best pizzas EVER!

This year we managed to raise £1275 which will bring our total to £7000 raised so far.

18 We do sll have a fair way to go as the remaining funds required amount to an addional £33000! The renewal of the play equipment is so important for the children of our community and surrounding areas as it promotes health, wellbeing, social skills, development and problem solving through play. With its proximity to the school it is extremely well patronised and is a valuable community resource. The new play equipment will offer play value to a broader range of ages and abilies keeping the children fit, acve and healthy.

Our next fundraising event will be a Masquerade Ball at The Hilton in Northampton on Saturday 29th September. Tickets will be £45pp and will include, 3 course meal, welcome drink and entertainment. This is set to be a fantasc evening so If you would like a cket for this event please email myself or Nicola Andrews at:- [email protected] [email protected] The next addion to the park will be a zipwire which I’m sure will be a popular for both children and adults! Your connued support is greatly appreciated.

Great Doddington Primary School

This year at Great Doddington Primary School we have introduced sports leaders. Sports leaders are children from year 5 and year 6 who lead sporty activities and help younger children learn how to use some of the equipment this school owns. They have also created challenge cards for the children to use and try and improve their ability to do something and they can come back the next day and try and beat their score.

We have recently had some new play equipment built and this money was raised by FOGDS. Mrs Chapman (PE Lead) and some other parents ran the London Marathon to raise extra funds. We couldn’t have built this if it wasn’t for the parents that volunteered to help install new play equipment. A special thankyou to the Timotay team.

We had a tea party to celebrate the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. There were lots of cake and drinks. So there has been a lot of fun this year for the children and the teachers of Great Doddington Primary.

By Solomon, aged 10.

22 FRIENDS OF GREAT DODDINGTON SCHOOL (FOGDS)

The Friends of Great Doddington School have had another successful few months, with a couple of big fundraisers. March saw the annual family quiz, held in the school hall, while April saw the return of the Wine Tasting Quiz. Thank you to all those that supported these fun events. More than £1000 was raised which has already been well spent on some new play equipment for the school playground.

The next big event is the Summer Fayre - to be held on Friday 29th June, 5:30 to 8pm - with all the usual fun stalls, splash zone and a BBQ. Make sure this date is in your diary!

We continue to fundraise throughout the year. Sign up to the 200 club, for only £1 a month, and you can support the school and be in with a chance of a cash prize. More information is available on the school Facebook site. Finally, we are always on the lookout for new members or supporters, so if you would like to join the friendly FOGDS team, please see a current member!

23 GOLDEN YEARS Activities and friendship group for Seniors

Golden Years is a community group that was set up in the summer of 2017 by Meg Neilan. The aim of the group is to offer the older generaon opportunies to engage more in social and physical acvies to improve their mental & physical health and overall wellbeing. We run a range of social oungs that give older people in the community a new lease of life. The group take pride in encouraging people to take part in acvies that they may never have imagined they would get the opportunity to experience. For example, since launching in July the group have achieved acvies such as skang, sponsored walks for charies, cocktail making at a night club, indoor skydiving plus many more. There is a greater understanding that many people struggle to become “older” and this can oen propel negave feelings and lead to isolaon and/ or depression. By offering supported opportunies for people to connue to live life to the full and remain acve, we hope to give them a sense of equilibrium and encouragement to live and enjoy life for as long as possible. One of the most posive aspects to the trips and events is that return transport is always included as a standard.

5 Pebble Lane, Wellingborough, NN8 1AS Tel: 01933 270009 The Preschool is now all settled into its new home at no.10 churchlane, so much has been achieved and you would never believe we have only been there are few months. The committee, staff, parents and volunteers all pulled together to make this happen, everyone at the preschool are so thankful to everyone that came up to help.

The children have all settled well and are thriving in their new environment.

Over Easter we have started works on the garden and with the help of Diggerman in the village we have been able to get the undercover area paved and now the children have outdoor space they can play in in all weather- this was desperately needed with all the rain we have had/having this year!!

Our fundraising team have been busy with their events. The Annual Easter egg hunt was a great success despite the weather we had a great turn out .... the kitchen struggled to keep up with the huge demand of bacon rolls! A massive £440 was raised some of this will go towards subsidising a day trip to the farm for the children.

26 /cont…The same week the team also hosted a 'Colours Fashionshow and pop up shop' at the club. Over 100 people attended and grabbed some bargains. It was a fantastic evening with so many high street brands available at hugely discounted prices. Watch this space as we may host another nearer to Christmas. The £1000 raised on this evening was put towards paving the undercover area at the preschool.

Thank you to everyone who has supported or helped with one of our events this year we are a charity and rely heavily on fundraising to grow our preschool.

We are always looking for volunteers to come and help out with an activity, it could be a one off or regular help. Cooking, reading, gardening, crafts, sports, helping with snacktimes or lunch. Whatever time you have to spare is greatly appreciated. Please get in touch.

DODDINGTON DUCKLINGS

Doddington Duckings is a volunteer run stay and play toddler group for children aged 0-5 based in the centre of Great Doddington at the Memorial Hall (42b High Street, Great Doddington). We meet on a Wednesday aernoon from 1.30 unl 3pm each week during term me.

In March of this year we increased our sessions to weekly from fortnightly and the number of children and babies coming to play each week is steadily increasing which is fantasc news. We have a lot of fun! The children can play with a variety of age appropriate toys and we have an area seconed off especially for the babies so that they remain safe from any boisterous play. Recent messy play and art acvies have included water play, painng, play dough, messy spaghe, colourful rice and cereal play. We have also been really lucky to have been able to share the pre-school’s so play equipment which was a lot of fun.

We aim to provide each child that aends a varied snack that can include fruit, vegetables, crackers, cheese, raisins and a sweet treat all washed down with squash or water. We even had ice lollies in the recent hot weather. Parents can relax and help themselves to a cup of tea or coffee and there’s usually cake or biscuits too!

If you would like to join us and make some friends (both the big and lile people, we’re a friendly bunch!) we would be really happy to see you.

35 GREAT DODDINGTON MEMORIAL HALL

Dear All

Thank you very much for your connued support with regards to the Village Memorial Hall facility. It is regularly in use during the dayme and a number of evenings through the week. There has also been a number of party type celebraons held over the weekend from me to me. The Pre-School said goodbye to our facilies as they moved into the adjacent property. We wish them well and would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their support over the large number of years that they have used the premises.

We would like to thank Jack Hurst, who has done a great job with regards to the maintenance of the facility. For those of you that use the hall, you will know that the Ellio Room has recently been redecorated and he has done a sterling job on that. Jack is also responsible for the numerous repairs that are carried out from day to day. What we like to do now is build a website for the Memorial Hall. If you have a potenal interest to help us or know someone who can, please can you contact our Secretary, Debbie at [email protected] .

We would like to put out a general request for anybody within the village or its environs who would like to suggest a potenal future use/s for the Hall going forwards. There have been a few suggesons so far such as a film night, talent night along with the usual quiz nights. Again, any suggesons you may have could you please forward them in the first instance to our Secretary, Debbie at the email address indicated above.

Thank you once again for connued support of what is a fantasc village facility which hopefully will remain so well into the future.

37 ST NICHOLAS CHURCH

The parish system run by the Church of means that every home in the country has access to the church. Residents of a parish have a right to have their bapsms, weddings and funerals held in the church and of course all are welcome to join in the church’s worship and social events. As Rector I am here for everybody, whether you aend the church or not, and as a church we welcome everyone. As part of our welcome, as well as Messy Church, on the third Saturday, and Open Church on the first Saturday of the month, we now also open the church on Tuesday mornings 11am -12 noon. There are people to welcome visitors and refreshments available. Do pop in if you are passing, it is a good opportunity to look at the building (a short history of which will be available soon), spend some me in quiet and, if we have a hot summer, somewhere to cool down! We recently held a maintenance morning at the church and were able to complete many roune and one off tasks, including gardening, general cleaning and repairs to the floor. Work on the nave windows should be starng soon. A year ago we began a new style of service, held on the first Sunday of each month at 4pm. The service follows an informal, café style format where we sing modern worship songs, read the Bible, pray together and share how God is working in our lives. Everyone is welcome. The Village Welcome Packs are connuing to prove both popular and useful for new residents, if you have a new neighbour please do let me know and I can arrange for a pack to be delivered. Inside are details not only of church events but informaon about many of the organisaons and businesses which are in the village. If you would like to be included in the pack again please let me know.

39 GREAT DODDINGTON HERITAGE GROUP

By the me you read this, we will have held a couple of events this year and supported the village May Day celebraons organised by the Friends of Great Doddington Park with a display of photographs of previous May Day events.

In March, Polly Feeley gave a very interesng talk about childhood memories in the 1950s. Helping Mum with folding sheets ready to iron aer they had been through the mangle and hung out to dry. Skipping in the school playground, and buying black jacks and ice jubblies with sixpence pocket money. Her talk was interspersed with music of the period and she encouraged us to guess who was singing. Doris Day, Guy Mitchell etc.

In April we enjoyed an amusing talk by Sue Chambers who was born in Wellingborough and spent her childhood and teenage years living in Jubilee Crescent. She has wrien a book entled “The other half of the crescent” which is an account of her life living on the Kingsway Estate, meeng Billy Fury, working at the Ideal clothing factory as well as nursing at Northampton General Hospital before working in mental health in the community. She has created a Pandora’s Box of memories included meeng Royalty. Her book is available at the Wellingborough Museum and makes for an interesng read.

Future events planned for the rest of the year include a guided tour of the Listed Grade I St Peter and St Paul Church at , which has a parcularly interesng stained glass window and the pulpit dated 1860 is intricately carved. A visit to Leicester to see the burial site of Richard III will take place in June and in October another talk by the excellent speaker Kevin Varty.

40 Our October exhibion which is to be held during the weekend of 6/7th October will be a general HERITAGE exhibion of photographs, many of them new to our ever growing collecon, maps, documents, scrapbooks as well as help being available for those wishing to research their village ancestors. There is no entrance fee, but donaons are welcome to enable us to carry on the work that we do. Light refreshments will be served throughout the weekend.

In November we will be holding an exhibion to commemorate one hundred years since the end of World War One. We held a similar one in 2014 to commemorate the start of this War. We already have some new material, but if anyone has any memorabilia, photos, stories that we could scan or borrow for this event we would very much appreciate you contacng us. It does not have to be specific to the village. It is always nice to see original documents, medals etc and we do have lockable display cabinets and stewards to keep an eye on things. We have two speakers, who are residents of the village, and they will be giving some informave and interesng talks in relaon to World War One during the weekend.

Our Glenfield Drive project is progressing well and we hope to show the research that we have done so far at the Heritage weekend to be held in October in the Memorial Hall. We are sll looking for Sales brochures, original house plans which we can borrow to copy and enable us to illustrate the progression of this area.

We opened up a FACEBOOK page last November. This is a “Closed Group” so only people who answer a couple of quesons as to why they want to join are allowed. It has already aracted over 160 members with former residents of the village re-uning which is always good to see, as well as adding informaon to the photographs which are posted each week. Many memories and discussions take place and new photographs to add to our every growing collecon.

As always, details of our events are published on our website, facebook page and in our display cabinet outside the Village Stores. Our photographic book volume 2 is on sale in the Village Stores. Membership: £6 per person/£12 per household. Treasurer: Linda Ross, 2 Wilby Lane.

Aer the prolonged cold winter, the glorious display of daffodils along The Ridge and Earls Barton Road have provided a warm welcome to those walking or driving into the village during the spring with the red and yellow tulips in the village garden providing a lovely splash of colour.

The gardening team is currently preparing to plant up the hanging baskets, tubs and planters throughout the village, with what we hope will be another colourful display for the summer. We are grateful to Ian Bowers for generously allowing us to use his poly tunnel for making up and storing the hanging baskets prior to installaon.

Profit from the annual Plant Sale, this year held on Saturday 5th May, covers the cost of providing the summer and winter floral displays throughout the village. The magnificent sum of £762.50 was raised and our thanks go to all those who supported it by generously supplying plants for sale or by purchasing the variety of plants on offer.

Our grateful thanks go to John Abbo for once again for producing the eye catching signs for this year’s event.

Carol Hurst kindly opened the Church early for us and served refreshments throughout the morning, which we very much appreciated.

We do rely on and are very grateful to the teams of residents who keep the floral displays watered throughout the season. We make an urgent plea to anyone willing to join the team of reserve waterers, to help out at holiday me etc, to please contact Carol Lovei on 01933 273917.

A big thank you to those who regularly mow the grass in various locaons around the village - please keep up the good work!

The Gardening Team is always pleased to welcome new members. You don’t need green fingers - just enthusiasm a sense of humour and an hour to spare occasionally. If you would like to know more, please give me a call on 01933 273770.

42 FOOD PRODUCTION SOCIETY (THE ALLOTMENTS)

Bad news, good news and tedious distracons

Let’s do bad news first. The weather has been appalling for gardeners and I think we missed spring and went straight from winter to summer. Sowing and planng is at least a month behind what we would normally expect due to the persistent rain and cold. We have been visited by thieves yet again and one of our members has had equipment stolen, it appears they now come with angle grinders to cut through strong chains, bad news indeed.

Good news me. The weather has now improved and I am sure that aer a late start all will be well but it means that we have to do all the work required in one month instead of two. We have all our plots let with a waing list of two having reduced this from four. We are acvely trying to improve the general husbandry of plots by giving noce to plot holders not culvang plots to an acceptable standard thus allowing new and hopefully keen gardeners to have the opportunity. I am expecng to have plots available in the next few months so if anyone is interested in a plot I can be contacted on 07468461411, email, [email protected]. We are in the process of acquiring a shipping container to store compost, organic chicken ferlizer, canes, etc. We can buy these products in bulk and sell to members at less than normal retail prices even allowing a small mark up to cover the cost of storage. That’s the good and bad,

Now the tedious. I am sure most people have now heard of GDPR (General Data Protecon Regulaon) and in principal a very good thing. Unfortunately, it is all encompassing and small organisaons such as ours are required to comply. As a Mutual Society regulated by the F.C.A. we are required by law to keep a register of all our members’ details but GDPR requires us to seek their permission! Do we expel them if permission is not granted? Enquiries are ongoing. I leave you with this thought, will we soon have to ensure our members carry out a risk assessment before pushing a fork into the ground. PS Donald & Crispy Duck are well but as all but two of the offspring were female the rest have now become Crispy Duck.

GREAT DODDINGTON FOOTBALL CLUB

We have just finished our second season since re-forming.

We finished a disappoinng 12th in division 4 aer an up and down season. We had a lot of players signed on some who are not available every week due to work and a few who decided they didn’t want to play. Aer Christmas the trimmed squad seemed to gel and we went on a run where we lost once in 6 games which lied the lads heads. A couple of defeats at the end when we were a bit depleted, but we are all looking forward to next season. We had a friendly match at Christmas with the u16’s which both teams enjoyed. Some of the u16’s have also been training with us at so hopefully we will soon have some new young players.

We are also planning a match against the “Doddington Old Boys” on 18th or 19th August. It was great to see some of them come and watch the last home game and a get together down at the club aerwards. Next season we are looking at starng a Sunday team. An applicaon has been made to the Nene Sunday League so, at the moment, we are awaing acceptance. More news in the next edion! Now we can all have a few weeks off and watch the World Cup. Steve Catling Secretary 07976189872 gdfcsec@bnternet.com

44 GREAT DODDINGTON CRICKET CLUB Congratulaons to the Great Doddington First XI Cricket Team for winning their first game against Cricket Club at their home ground. This took place on a slightly chilly but very sunny evening on Tuesday 22nd May 2018. Aer winning the toss, Mears Ashby elected to bowl first and put Great Doddington in to bat. This was just as well, as there was only 7 team members there at the 6pm start me. Aer a bit of sustained bowling aack, Great Doddington slowly got into the runs and managed to score an excellent total of 167 runs from their 20 overs.

Having posted such a great total, it was then a queson of Great Doddington’s bowling aack being up to the task of liming the home team of Mears Ashby Cricket Club to 166 runs or less. Aer a bit of a shaky start and the occasional “interesng” over courtesy of our “buffet bowlers”, Mears Ashby were limited to a total of 133 runs off their 20 overs. This was a great win for the first game of the season for Great Doddington Cricket Club. There was of course the usual contenous, if not slightly amusing umpiring decisions. A batsman (Great Doddington’s newest resident) was heard to muer as he came off the pitch that the umpire had eyesight as good as Clarence, the beauful lion off the old TV show Daktari. Onwards and upwards as they say.

Upcoming games that are generally good fun to watch are the “young guns” v “the old mers”. These are on Sundays 5th and 12th August starng at 12noon at Mears Ashby CC. A bar and tea and coffee are available and bring along a picnic!

F i n a l l y, a c a p o n compeon for this photograph. Answers by 31st July on a postcard (a beer mat will do) to 16 Goodens L a n e , G r e a t Doddington, NN29 7TY. A bole of bubbly to the winner.
