  • Bob Dylan Performs “It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding),” 1964–2009
Volume 19, Number 4, December 2013 Copyright © 2013 Society for Music Theory A Foreign Sound to Your Ear: Bob Dylan Performs “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding),” 1964–2009 * Steven Rings NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: http://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.13.19.4/mto.13.19.4.rings.php KEYWORDS: Bob Dylan, performance, analysis, genre, improvisation, voice, schema, code ABSTRACT: This article presents a “longitudinal” study of Bob Dylan’s performances of the song “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)” over a 45-year period, from 1964 until 2009. The song makes for a vivid case study in Dylanesque reinvention: over nearly 800 performances, Dylan has played it solo and with a band (acoustic and electric); in five different keys; in diverse meters and tempos; and in arrangements that index a dizzying array of genres (folk, blues, country, rockabilly, soul, arena rock, etc.). This is to say nothing of the countless performative inflections in each evening’s rendering, especially in Dylan’s singing, which varies widely as regards phrasing, rhythm, pitch, articulation, and timbre. How can music theorists engage analytically with such a moving target, and what insights into Dylan’s music and its meanings might such a study reveal? The present article proposes one set of answers to these questions. First, by deploying a range of analytical techniques—from spectrographic analysis to schema theory—it demonstrates that the analytical challenges raised by Dylan’s performances are not as insurmountable as they might at first appear, especially when approached with a strategic and flexible methodological pluralism.

  • Rock & Roll: a Discourse of “Rethink”
RESEARCH ARTICLE ROCK & ROLL: A DISCOURSE OF “RETHINK” OF THE DUALISM OF THE CENTRE AND THE MARGIN Divya Sharma (Doctor of Philosophy in English Literature from Dept. of English, University of Jammu, India) Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Within the politics of the systematic subversion of subordinate through the logic of domination within the ontological divide African American women artists’ music emerges as a resistance mechanism at subverting the culture/nature Cartesian dualism initiating a discourse of “rethink” of the dualism of “the centre” and “the margin,” thwarting the myth of the “Otherness” in turn liberating the other, and implicitly all such “Other” groups through the celebration of the associative interconnectivity across these marginal groups. The chapter covers the literary oeuvre of significant rock and roll African American women artists, right from its inception during the period of the blues i.e. the 1920s in the work of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, in the 1950s in the music of LaVern Baker and Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton, and in the 1960s in that of Odetta Holmes. • CHRISTMAS MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES Sunday, December
CHRISTMAS MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES Sunday, December 22, or Wednesday December 25, 2013 Daryl J. Walker, Lectionary Team Liturgist Worship Planning Notes The Christmas Story is a critical chapter in the greatest story ever told. Jesus is the central character. As supporting players, Mary and Joseph are key to Jesus’ appearance on the scene. The angels serve the role of chorus and narrators who tell the story. The shepherds were out in the dark in the field, but they move to center stage when they visit with Jesus in the manger. The 1 shepherds get so excited about what’s going on that they can’t remain quiet on the sidelines; they jump right into the action and all of a sudden, The Christmas Story becomes an audience- participation play. In many ways the shepherds represent us—people on the periphery who have heard about this Jesus and what his arrival on the earthly scene means for us. Like the shepherds, each of us has a chance to become an integral part of Jesus’ story by simply checking out what we hear, receiving what it promises, and then spreading the word to others who haven’t left the role of “audience bystander” yet. The foundational Scripture for this unit approaches The Christmas Story from the perspective of the shepherds who go from being bystanders to costars. Since we are like the shepherds, approach the program as an audience-participation occasion. Remind the congregation that “Christmas” is a compound word: Christ + mas. Christmas is a mass for Christ, and a mass is a celebration.

  • Vanguard Label Discography Was Compiled Using Our Record Collections, Schwann Catalogs from 1953 to 1982, a Phono-Log from 1963, and Various Other Sources
Discography Of The Vanguard Label Vanguard Records was established in New York City in 1947. It was owned by Maynard and Seymour Solomon. The label released classical, folk, international, jazz, pop, spoken word, rhythm and blues and blues. Vanguard had a subsidiary called Bach Guild that released classical music. The Solomon brothers started the company with a loan of $10,000 from their family and rented a small office on 80 East 11th Street. The label was started just as the 33 1/3 RPM LP was just gaining popularity and Vanguard concentrated on LP’s. Vanguard commissioned recordings of five Bach Cantatas and those were the first releases on the label. As the long play market expanded Vanguard moved into other fields of music besides classical. The famed producer John Hammond (Discoverer of Robert Johnson, Bruce Springsteen Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan and Aretha Franklin) came in to supervise a jazz series called Jazz Showcase. The Solomon brothers’ politics was left leaning and many of the artists on Vanguard were black-listed by the House Un-American Activities Committive. Vanguard ignored the black-list of performers and had success with Cisco Houston, Paul Robeson and the Weavers. The Weavers were so successful that Vanguard moved more and more into the popular field. Folk music became the main focus of the label and the home of Joan Baez, Ian and Sylvia, Rooftop Singers, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Doc Watson, Country Joe and the Fish and many others. During the 1950’s and early 1960’s, a folk festival was held each year in Newport Rhode Island and Vanguard recorded and issued albums from the those events.

Odetta (b.12/31/1930, d.12/2/2008) Odetta Holmes, simply known as Odetta, was born on December 31, 1930 in Birmingham Alabama. After the death of her father while still a child, Odetta and her mother moved to Los Angeles in 1937. After hearing her sing, one of Odetta’s grammar school teachers insisted that Odetta’s mother sign her up for classical training. After finishing high school she continued to Los Angeles City College to study music. After graduating from college, Odetta landed a role in the chorus of a traveling production of Finian’s Rainbow. She fell in love with folk music when, after a show in San Francisco, she experienced a late-night folk music session. After being touched by those songs she said, “I borrowed a guitar and learned three chords, and started to sing at parties.” In 1953, she moved to New York City and soon became a fixture at Manhattan’s famed Blue Angel nightclub. “As I did those songs, I could work on my hate and fury without being antisocial,” she said. “Through those songs, I learned things about the history of black people in this country that the historians in school had not been willing to tell us about or had lied about.” She recorded her first solo album, Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues, in 1956, and it became an instant classic in American folk music. Bob Dylan later cited that album as the record that first turned him on to folk music. In 1960, Odetta delivered a famed concert at Carnegie Hall and released a live recording of the performance.

Professor Werner Sollors Jack Hamilton Professor Carol J. Oja Rubber Souls: Rock and Roll and the Racial Imagination Abstract This dissertation explores the interplay of popular music and racial thought in the 1960s, and asks how, when, and why rock and roll music “became white.” By Jimi Hendrix’s death in 1970 the idea of a black man playing electric lead guitar was considered literally remarkable in ways it had not been for Chuck Berry only ten years earlier: employing an interdisciplinary combination of archival research, musical analysis, and critical race theory, this project explains how this happened, and in doing so tells two stories simultaneously.
